The only D equivalent I can think of is Maxine Waters, where even her own constituents know that she is crazy but they vote for her anyway because GO TEAM BLUE. But Maxine is in a gerrymandered HOUSE district. No way her schtick would get much play in a statewide race.

It's tough to admit that "your side" contains people who are willing to commit crimes against the country on behalf of your party. (See also: downplaying the threats against the Supreme Court.)

From a political standpoint, this will ultimately be bad for the Republican Party.
Blue states will be unaffected, but red states will struggle to attend to the millions of unwanted children -- causing a short-term burden on the welfare system, and a long-term burden on the criminal justice...
But since the COVID deaths tended to happen in redder areas anyway, I would expect Trump to maintain a comfortable advantage in those places.
Also, the reduction of vote-by-mail is going to narrow the playing field significantly.
I'd say that the truth was somewhere in the middle. When Lee said "give me something to work with," I think he was asking for evidence, not talking points. He needed to see something tangible before he would agree to put up with any shenanigans. IMO.
