2024 Las Vegas Raiders thread - RIP Mr. Raider (6 Viewers)

No, I am not taking a 1st on him when for four straight years he hasn't finished a season. Nope.
Nope is right. Get the facts straight before posting.
I didn’t post that. That’s a weird copy and paste of the quotes there. I know at Indiana he didn’t finish a season due to injury (2 knees, a clavicle and throwing shoulder) per the article he’s been healthy since 2021. Like I said, he’s finished the past 2 seasons. 🤷‍♂️

Gee... I can't believe how off I was from memory...

Penix spent four years at Indiana. In three seasons as a full-time starter, he never played in more than six games. Injuries were a major part of his story in Bloomington, ending each of his final three years prematurely.

In 2018, it was an ACL tear in his right knee. In 2019, he dislocated the sternoclavicular joint in his right arm. In 2020, he tore the same ACL again in his right knee. Then in 2021, he separated his shoulder at his AC joint.

There's a whole bunch of ways we could go at QB that I would not be mad at.

Is Nix at 13 a good deal? Might seem that way in a month.

Russell Wilson for the league minimum? Look, I don't want this cringey goofy gomer in Vegas either, but league minimum? One year deal with AOC, and maybe a Rattler or whatever? Could be much worse, and keep you in play for QB next year.

I just don't wanna force anything.

Exactly, all I was trying to say was I like Michael Penix just not at 13 or moving up to grab him like one guy in the media did in a recent mock. I like McCarthy too but his lack of experience concerns me a little. Penix (if healthy 🤣) can beat out AOC this season, McCarthy most likely would have to sit.

CBS Mock

Wow! These guys are nuts. I’m probably the biggest Michael Penix supporter on here but to move up to 10 to draft a guy with 4 knee surgeries (don’t quote me, I believe they’re all on the knees) is just reckless IMO. I’d love for them to grab him in the 2nd round or trade back to the end of the 1st I could probably live with.

I hope my link works, first time trying it here.
And the cost. No way

"As of Tuesday, Minnesota currently has the best odds to draft McCarthy this April at +250, according to the DraftKings Sportsbook. The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks are both tied for the next-best odds to select the former Michigan quarterback in this year's draft at +650."

If the betting odds are conveying actual insider info, the Raiders would need to trade up to land JJM.

Yep.

Of course. The first fella I fall in love with is the guy shooting up the boards more than anyone. :crying:

Everyone's falling in love with that lil heartbreaker, or in this case ,draft breaker.

We all knew winning a few games at the end of the season would drop the Raiders into no mans QB land, but IMO it was worth it. We got the coach everyone wanted and more importantly a promising future of a winning culture .
I know 6th rd guys like Brady rarely ever happen but how many 1st rd busts do we see at QB as well . AOC was a 4th rd bargain if you compare his numbers to 1st rd pk Bryce Young , he looks like a steal . Other than wearing cement shoes hes pretty good and appeared to be getting better the more he played , it will be interesting to see how AOC does with a fresh start and some real game experience to draw back on. The Raiders playing the hand they are dealt this draft and not reaching will be fine with me , pick the best player available to fill several needs they have as various positions .

My bad. I misread your post as his last 4 years. I think the last two years speaks more about his upside.

I've read this, but many QBs have come in with less experience and played well rookie year.
I could be wrong, I’m no expert that’s for sure. I’ve also heard people hammering Nix and Penix for having too much experience.
Too much experience?

Does not compute.
Yeah, I can’t remember where I saw it or read it. Someone was knocking Penix and Nix for being too old, yet both men are the same age as Jayden Daniels.
I would think the more college experience, the better. Especially for QBs since the ones that take care of themselves can play into their late 30s and early 40s these days.
It’s that time of year I guess where everyone picks apart every player looking for faults and reasons not to draft them.

Lovie Smith won a meaningless game for HOU two years ago, dropping them to #2 overall, and it was seen as a TRAGEDY.

As you know, they were forced to take CJ Stroud. The word is, they wanted Bryce. They had to settle for the best rookie QB ever.

The reason I never want to tank is because this is not the NBA. The top guys aren't locks.

Penix/Daniels/Nix and Maye/Caleb/McCarthy are in two distinct tiers in one major way. The first three guys weren't super impressive early in their careers. The last three were. It's a big reason I wasn't surprised McCarthy went flying up draft boards. It's the main reason I am not going to be surprised if Daniels ranking falls a little bit. Because he wasn't seen as draftable this time last year. 5th year senior, goes from undraftable to top 3 is REALLY unusual.

I think this is really the time of year, after the Senior/Super Bowls, we start seeing big boards that make sense. Because media like Jeremiah/Brooks/Zierlein/Brugler have actually had access to front office types, which they previously had not. The guys with contacts update their big boards, and the rest fall in line.

Perfect example is Trevor Sikkema. He does stuff for PFF, and does a podcast which I like a lot. Now, I like Trevor, and he does his own work, but he adjusts to what is happening. But he is really just one of the sea of draft guys like CBS and whoever else.

Feb 2, TWO WEEKS AGO, He does a two round mock. No JJ McCarthy. In either round!! Now, this is the guys who have been evaluating and ranking players all season long. Good podcast by the way.

This was his mock 3 days ago. JJ McCarthy at #10.

And here he is on Twitter, yesterday. Suddenly in the last two weeks, he likes him more. I mean, this is all pretty obvious stuff. He caught up with the guys who actually have NFL connections.

In fact, it's pretty well known that Jeremiah throws some random names in his top 50 players rankings to throw off the wannabes. He will put some 3rd/4th round guys in his top 50, just to watch the wannabes update their mocks/rankings, and he drops them out later. Mike Renner talks about it in his podcast. And gives examples.

Combine will be the next round of shakeups. Some players rise and fall because of workouts, but also because the media gets to speak to teams in Indy, and find out where they differ from the NFL teams. After that, the draftniks go back and 'take another look' at certain players, and adjust. :bored::bored:

Earlier in this thread I posted about Nix and Penix in comparing them to McCarthy. Nix and Penix have five and six years of college experience and they should look good in college at this point with that much experience. If you're comparing them to McCarthy he has more room for growth and a higher ceiling IMO.

Great post. I just checked out Sikkema’s mock and I like what he projects for the Raiders. DT Murphy at #13 and trading one of their three 7th rounders and a 2025 third to move up in the 2nd for Penix. Sign me up for that!

I like Murphy, definitely one of the guys I'd be interested in at 13.

I'd prefer we go Cousins or Geno over Penix/McCarthy. I've watched a decent amount of Michigan over the past 9 years and I just don't see it with McCarthy

The JJM hype train keeps accelerating. Folks in his thread now saying multiple NFL teams have him rated QB2 or 3. Either there is a huge McCarthy psy-opp happening ahead of this draft or the Raiders would need to trade into the top three to grab him. I am not in for what it would take to do that (for any QB in this draft). I'm a fan of JJM, but much moreso as sleeper/value pick than a bet the farm. Sit back and maybe snipe Daniels or Maye if they fall to 6 or latter instead. Or grab BPA rd 1 and draft Richard Rattler in rd 3 or later.

Speaking of C, Cody Whitehair was a cap casualty.

If he were to be signed, it would be not count towards compensatory cap formula, FWIW. Any player released doesn't count towards comp picks, only those who completed their contracts.

I would like this move even though I fully expect Parham to be moved to Center. Having a Center that knows the offense is probably the second most important player to be familiar with an offense (after the QB) and on top of it, he is a very good Center.... really the only bright spot on the Bear Oline which otherwise was really not good. I think you have to kick those tires for sure and see what the price tag is to bring him on.

He can play well in multiple spots on the line. If he’s not too expensive, I like it

I mean... I am still stuck on it....

Quarterback for your Las Vegas Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaiders........ RAAAAAAAAAAATLER!*

*I have not seen him play or even read a scouting report on him

Wow, huge news for the Raiders cap this morning.

Cutting Grop will now free up either $10.5 MM or $23 MM in 2024 cap, depending on whether they designate it as a June 1 cut.

I'd bet Chris Jones would take $23 MM to play in S&B next year and stick it to the Chiefs.

(And the Raiders would still have $50+ mm in cap to spend elsewhere after cutting Renfrow.)

Per PFF the top ten FA QB's is below. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to rate each on a scale of 1-10. 1 = second coming of Stabler. 10 = I would rather we kept Jimmy G and someone physically torture me until I bleed out and die. Bonus points for explaining your rating.

  1. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings
  2. Josh Dobbs, Minnesota Vikings
  3. Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans
  4. Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints
  5. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  6. Gardner Minshew, Indianapolis Colts
  7. Tyler Huntley, Baltimore Ravens
  8. Sam Darnold, San Francisco 49ers
  9. Teddy Bridgewater, Detroit Lions
  10. Tyrod Taylor, New York Giants

  1. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings - 5: He’s going to come with a heavy price and obviously a torn Achilles. Not the worst move to make at QB.
  2. Josh Dobbs, Minnesota Vikings - 7: if they plan to go with AOC and just need an experienced vet to push him and make him earn it, fine. As a starter, no thanks.
  3. Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans - 6: see Dobbs above gets the 6 due to history of decent play.
  4. Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints - 5: Intruiging, might not be the greatest leader but he’ll sling it.
  5. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 4: I’d take him and his leadership in a heartbeat, problem is, so will Tampa. He ain’t going anywhere.
  6. Gardner Minshew, Indianapolis Colts - 4: He showed me a lot this past season. I like him but he’s average at best. I’ve seen enough average QBs in Silver & Black. We need greatness. Bridge QB yes if AOC takes a step back.
  7. Tyler Huntley, Baltimore Ravens - 8: Meh, unless that’s the style QB they’re looking for. It wouldn’t be too smart to have 2 vastly different QBs like AOC and Huntley.
  8. Sam Darnold, San Francisco 49ers - 9: I’ve just never been a fan. If SF doesn’t think they can make something out of him, what makes the Raiders think they can?
  9. Teddy Bridgewater, Detroit Lions -10: I believe he just retired and got a coaching gig somewhere.
  10. Tyrod Taylor, New York Giants - 7: See Huntley but with more experience.

From the super shocking files.... Hoyer reportedly will not be retained.
Mcdaniels was horrible. Good Lord
I don’t know if any of you were like me but I was so excited to move on from Gruden that I didn’tthink about McD much when he arrived. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 2023 season When I realized we may be in trouble when I saw the QBs on the roster. His handling of the QB position was an absolute disaster and probably his biggest mistake. How he didn’t see that Jimmy G had no arm is unbelievable.

I always tried to keep a positive attitude because as a fan, what other options are there? We were stuck with him but I’ve never rooted for the Raiders to lose no matter what and I never will.
You’re 100% correct, there was a time in early March 2023 that Garbers was the only QB on the roster. How can anyone be excited about an upcoming season when you’re in a division with Mahomes and Herbert and your QB room is an injured JimmyG, Clipboard Holder Hoyer, and an unknown QB at the time in AOC.
That’s why I laugh at the people who say watch out for Denver!!! They have Payton! So? Is he going to play QB too? They are in the same boat the Raiders were last season. Pretty much a rebuild.

i read a rumor somewhere that McGoofy thought Brady was going to QB the Raiders and had to go to plan G when the rumor fizzled
