*** 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Tomlin signs a 3 year extension (6 Viewers)

Tomlin signs a three year extension

You can hear the yinzers crying off in the distance -- Caw'er, Caw'er, Caw'er
Nah, it's not about missing Cowher. Nothing to do with Cowher.

It's about what Tomlin hasn't accomplished since 2010 when Ben was still 28 years old.

It is what it is, though. Tomlin might as well have a lifetime contract as long as he wins 9 games per year and maintains his reputation.

If Tomlin's teams beat Jville and Cleveland those 2 years and lost the next round games, would people be satisfied? I know the field goal posts would move no matter what they last 8 yrs produced. They could have won the SB in 2017 and people would still want him gone. All this fake outrage and rambling on is just a waste of time. He's the coach, and the players win games. Same with all the other 31 teams.

Tomlin signs a three year extension
I know some fans will hate this because this was supposed to be Tomlin's "prove it" year, but I think this is a good thing.

This feels like the start of a new era (for better or worse). We made a fair amount of changes from last season going into this season. I think this is Tomlin's last chance to prove it with a new OC and QB options. It also extends Tomlin to be at the helm through this current era of defense which I think the players wanted. If neither Fields nor Wilson works out, we get a new QB next season and Tomlin has 3 years to get this team to greatness again.

We have an incredibly tough schedule this year that should be able to show if either of these QBs are the answer.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans were very critical of Bill Cowher back in the day.

Steeler's organization is big on stability. I don't think the Steeler's will ever fire Mike Tomlin.

Some knocks on Tomlin: Playoff Struggles (Lack of Super Bowl Wins just has 1 and some will say it's with Cowher's guys), Clock Management, Gets out coached, lack of coaching tree, loyalty to horrible coaches (Canada) and Discipline Issues.

Philly is the opposite of Pittsburgh they are hard on head coaches they've fired 2 head coaches who've won a Super Bowl.

I’m generally a Tomlin fan but I’ll add he is infamous for not making any meaningful halftime adjustments.

And there always seems to be those 1-2 games every year that are “Tomlin games” aka the Steelers lose to a team they are seen as much better than. Example - Cardinals and Pats last year.

Tomlin NEEDS a strong OC counterpart to compliment his defense. Never once have I heard about a "Tomlin" offense other than high level stay on schedule & don't turn the ball over. Nothing to hint at play design or scripting out play sequences. Halftime adjustment on offense coming from Tomlin makes me laugh. His head is 80% on defense. Being a players coach, the WR get unruly and need someone to keep them in check. There is no seed for an offensive tree to grow here.

Defensive tree??? To be fair, his record when TJ Watt doesn't play is abysmal. Despite that, he typically does a great job putting playmakers in a position to thrive. Makes good adjustments when injuries crop up (other than losing TJ). Division record is good mostly due to defense. Not many teams can draw up a D that shuts down Lamar. Mad respect.

Considering Tomlin's weakness with offense and discipline, Arthur Smith is an excellent counterpart. He's a strong leader, communicates well and brings more discipline than we've seen since Tomlin took over. Other than moving on from Kenny a year early, bringing in Smith could be the best move of the offseason.

Looking back at the Killer's B's what a travesty / lost opportunity

The "Killer B's" in the context of the Pittsburgh Steelers refer to the era from the 2013 season to the 2017 season when three offensive players were in their prime:
Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell , and Ben Roethlisberger, all of whom have initials beginning with the letter 'B'. This trio was considered one of the most talented offensive combinations in Steelers history. Despite their talent, they only won three playoff games during their six years together. Unfortunately, their era ended after Bell refused to sign the franchise tag in 2017, and both Brown and Bell eventually left the team. Kind of reminds me of Troy, Emmitt and Michael from Dallas. I'd prefer Ben and AB. I could argue for Bell too but I won't.

I strongly believe that if Mike Tomlin wasn't the HC. Russell and Justin would of went elsewhere.

The reason these teams underperformed is Todd Hayley. He was pushed on Tomlin by Rooney
