Hi everyone.  This is a thread to test my Rube Goldberg "game engine" for the upcoming FFA Best Soccer/Football XI Tournament.  We are using real life teams for this exercise, not teams that have been drafted.  You will see four poll questions.  Your answers to each of those questions will potentially generate bonuses for one of the two teams.  We will vote until Midnight on Saturday, and then I will use those results to generate the game outcome.  This game is being held at Old Trafford in Manchester, England.  Here are the lineups:

Barcelona --

GK -- Marc Andre Ter Stegen

RB -- Dani Alves

CB -- Gerard Pique

CB Javier Mascherano

LB -- Jordi Alba

DM -- Sergi Busquets

RCM -  Ivan Rakitic

LCM -- Andres Iniesta

RW -- Lionel Messi

ST -- Luis Suarez

LW -- Neymar

Bench:  Claudio Bravo (GK), Marc Barta (CB), Adriano (FB), Munir (ST), Arda Turan (M), Sergi Samper (DM), Aleix Vidal (LW,RW)

Manchester United

GK -- David De Gea

RB -Cameron Bothwick Jackson

CB -- Chris Smalling

CB -- Daley Blind

LB -- Luke Shaw

CM -- Morgan Schneiderlin

CM -- Anders Herrera

RAM -- Wayne Rooney

CAM -- Juan Mata

LAM -- Anthony Martial

ST -- Marcus Rashford

Bench:  Sergio Romero (GK); Phil Jones (CB/DM), Bastian Schweinsteiger (CM), Ashley Young (LB/LAM), Matteo Darmian (RB), Antonio Valencia (FB/M), Jesse Lingard (M)

Please feel free to vote and leave and comments or questions in the thread while we work out the kinks.

Pol suggestions (maybe a pole for the pouel suggestions):

Best chance at a set piece goal

Best team chemistry/tactics

Maybe just a straight up, "who do you think will win".

Before voting I think it would be good for each team to do a little write-up of their lineup and tactics.  I imagine they won't change too much from game to game, but it would be cool to see how/why the team was assembled as it was and how it will work together.

Just brainstorming here.

I can't wait for someone in the draft to say "hold on you mean this tournament is going to be dependent on voting and dice rolls???"

Game time polling results: >60% in any category generates a bonus:

Barcelona gets the bonus for dominating possession and creating chance  -- One roll on the Neutral table will now be on the Advantage Table

Barcelona gets the bonus for finishing -- Savings rolls will be made for close chances until a max of one savings roll changes a chance to a goal.

Barcelona gets the bonus for chance limitation -- One roll on the disadvantage table will now be on the Neutral table.

Manchester United gets the bonus for goalkeeping-- Savings rolls will be made for all goals against until a max of one savings roll changes a goal to a save.

Barcelona gets a bonus for offensive substitutions.  After making an offensive change, Barcelona will get the better of two rolls on their next roll.

Remember, the default 6 roll distribution is 1 Advantage Rolls, 4 Neutral Rolls, and 1 Disadvantage Roll.

Factoring in bonuses, Barcelona gets 2 Advantage Rolls and 4 Neutral Rolls.  A random list generator gives me the order:

  1. Neutral
  2. Neutral
  3. Neutral
  4. Advantage
  5. Advantage
  6. Neutral
.  Man U gets the default distribution (1,4,1).  The order is:

  1. Disadvantage
  2. Advantage
  3. Neutral
  4. Neutral
  5. Neutral
  6. Neutral

Barcelona's First roll is 12.

Set piece roll: 4!

Wayne Rooney curls in a beauty from 23 yards away!  Man U 1- 0 Barca

Baca roll 3 (Neutral) --1 Goal!  Man U's saving roll for DeGea fails!

Messi picks up the ball on the right flank and beat Luke Shaw to the inside.  He looks to be lining up a shot on his favored left foot, but instead picks out Neymar arriving at the far post for an easy volley!  Man U 1 - 1 Barca

Barcelona roll 5 (Advantage) -- 3 Goal!  De Gea's saving roll fails!

Barcelona immediately answers back!  Suarez controls a ball from Neymar expertly on his chest and fires into the top corner on the turn.  Sensational!  Man U 2 - Barca 2

Barcelona make an offensive substitution bringing in Munir for Suarez.

Barcelona Roll 6 (Neutral -- Best of 2 rolls): 1, 14:  Goal! De Gea's savings roll fails!

What a dream for Munir!  Messi shoots from 21 yards.  De Gea somehow gets a hand to it, but can only palm as far as the substitute who makes no mistake from 6 yards!  Barcelona are in dreamland!

Man U 2-3 Barca

Man U Roll 6 (Neutral) --20 Goal Conceded -- De Gea's savings roll succeeds!

Man U brings De Gea up for a corner, but Barca clear.  De Gea is having to race back to his line!  Rakitic lines up a long shot at the empty net.  It's arcing high and on target but De Gea somehow gets back to tip it over the bar!  An amazing save that will only come as faint consolation to De Gea as the referee blows for the final whistle!

Final Score:  Man U 2 - 3 Barcelona

So that's a game.  Tourney members, consider whether a team like Barca should get a bigger advantage in rolling on advantage tables.  My impression is that Man U largely rolled luckier than Barca, which made it closer than this type of matchup normally would be.  Still, anything can happen on any day.

One change I might make is to give fewer goals on set pieces.  40% is perhaps too much.

Very interesting.  I think an interesting thing to do is to get a feeling for what the "Vegas odds" of a game would be.  For instance, if the two teams actually played, what would the score be.  Personally, I'd say 3-1 would be fair, so a 3-2 lead isn't that shocking.

I think I should make the default setting 2 Advantage, 2 Neutral, 2 Disdavantage. And maybe make those chance creation/prevention metrics work both ways.  In other words, Barca gets an Advantage for a Neutral and Man U gains a Neutral that would have been an Advantage for the offensive poll.  And Barca gets a Neutral that would have been a disadvantage while Man U gets a Disadvantage that would have been a Neutral.

That would have given Barca 3 Advantage, 2 Neutral, 1 Disadvantage and Man U a 1 Advantage 2 Neutral 3 Disadvantage under those poll results.

I just re-rolled the game this way.  Barca rolled even worse and Man U won 4-3.  I think the biggest change I need to make is to make set pieces slightly less powerful.  Maybe have 3 sure goals and then something like 8 to 10 that would require a free kick/finishing savings roll.
