Breaking - 5/29/18 Brandon Marshall To Sign With SEA (1 Viewer)

And perfect example of what we've been talking about here. This could eventually be merged with this old thread. 

But for today, this is all about Marshall in Seattle and more likely it's talk about Russell Wilson and the Seattle receivers. Which is a good topic and not something to buried in a general Brandon Marshall thread.

 
Good for Seattle and Wilson, especially after losing Graham they could use a big Red Zone target like Marshall. Wilson remains in elite fantasy QB range. As for Marshall...no more than a WR4 I'd think with a chance of being a WR3.

 
I think hes washed up. Seattle did this same trick with chad ocho....marshall will be lucky to make the team

If Marshall has enough left in the tank to be a real red zone threat, it's a plus for Wilson and probably a small minus for Ed Dickson and Tyler Lockett.  Agree with the first reply though, I don't see Marshall as much more than a spot start WR4 in hopes of a short TD.

 
If he couldn't do anything in the fantasy wasteland of NYG, I seriously doubt he'll make any noise in SEA.

Once you get a rep as a locker room and sideline headache it definitely can affect your career.  When will these guys learn that the NFL collude against such players, even when they're desperate.  I'm not saying Bryant won't eventually get a job but players need to toll the company line, just as I have to at my job.  Especially those players that are either at the end of their career or isn't producing.

Good point  Although its exactly why I believe the man has a chance to succeed  Fans overdue for a vet to shine on any other team besides the Pats  Not to mention I don't believe any other "Star" WR's will demand near the attention had in NY  Plus the run game should be more dynamic   Believe Marshall may compare nicely to other potential WR3's to be had to cost more this Season

Technically I may just be blinded by the info about using the latest medicine/healing techniques available today  But I truly doubt Carroll would be signing a player who's not close to game shape too

Former Marshall owner who finally dropped him  last year after many years of production.  There just isn’t anything left in the tank.  I’m glad he got a chance at another payday, but I won’t be spending even $1 of our annual $50 FA purse to resign him.  There’s just not enough left.  He can’t get open any more.

A guy not being signed is no proof of collusion. How did you jump to that conclusion?

 
Marshall had a huge year in 2015. In 2016 he really dropped off despite playing 15 games and then in 2017 he had his season end in week 5 but was very mediocre after 4 games. The plus side is this is maybe the best QB he has had to play with. The negatives are age, coming off injury and he is 2 full seasons away from being a relevant WR. I think the negatives outweigh the positives. I wouldn't be shocked if he found a way to put up a good season but I think it's much more likely that he doesn't have any real value in 2018.

So you saying that Marshall being signed before Dez is proof that all 32 clubs have communicated with each other and have agreed to intentionally and willfully conspire to not sign Dez?

This is the first name I thought of.  Baldwin and Lockett are mostly unaffected.  Jaron Brown is a deep threat.  Darboh is the guy who holds the role most similar to Marshall, and has not yet proven his worth.  If he pans out, chances are Marshall either doesn't make the team or just becomes vet depth.  But if Darboh struggles too much in preseason, Marshall will supplant him as #3.

I understand and appreciate that Joe.  But collude is a very strong word with very severe connected actions - and IMO (maybe only in my opinion :)  ) worth drilling down on a little.

If you think it’s not worthwhile, I’ll concede to your position.

And I agree that Marshall will be lucky to make the team. No impact on Wilson either way and, outside of Baldwin there isn't really another pass catcher on Seattle that seems very compelling.

 
I'm not a Seahawks fan so how much did Jimmy Graham line up as a TE vs. splitting out? Meaning:if Marshall has anything left and if Graham was mostly splitting out he actually could play much of the role Graham had played.

 
To put the rosiest spin possible on the situation the Seahawks lost Graham and Paul Richardson who accounted for 176 targets last season.  Those targets need to go somewhere I guess.  But before we go redistributing all those targets to WRs we should consider that the Seahawks attempted 555 (58%) passes last season and only 409 (42%) rushes so I personally would start off by allocating most of those targets to the running game and we should expect something closer to a 50:50 split, maybe +/- 3%. So I would put it closer to 85-110 targets that are up for grabs. At least that is the ratio I think Pete Carroll would like to accomplish.

My money is on Baldwin and Lockett being the first two options in the passing game to receive those targets. Baldwin ranked 16th in targets among WRs so IMO he has capacity.  Lockett is the other obvious choice for an uptick in targets. My guess is, combined, Lockett and Baldwin will siphon off 45-55 of the remaining targets.  So we're left with anywhere from 30 to 65 targets to allocate to the other pass catchers on the team.

So under the rosiest of circumstances if Marshall were to get all 65 targets and manage to catch 65.6% of them (his career high) for an average of 15.5 YPC (his career high) adding a TD percentage of 7% (Russell Wilson's career high) you get 43 catches for 661 yards and 3 TDs.

Maybe, just maybe they tag him as some kind of goal line specialist. He has a career 40% catch rate inside the 10 yard line and 80% of those catches have been converted into TDs. Okay then looking at the past 10 years the most targets any WR or TE has gotten inside the 10 yard line is Alshon Jeffrey with 19 in 2014, the most targets Russell Wilson has put up to any WR or TE inside the 10 yard line is 16 targets to Jimmy Graham in 2017. That would translate to 5-6 TDs for Marshall plus whatever he managed outside the 10 yard line.

Personally I don't see Marshall hitting any of his career highs in his 13th season, nor do I see him getting Russell Wilson's career high in targets inside the 10 (after Graham's 16 in 2017 Wilson's targets have gotten 10, 7, 7, 6, 6, 5, 5, 5 etc. inside the 10 yard line).

It seems like for the last two years, Brandon Marshall has been downgraded to being a No. 2 receiver.  Last year, it was Odell Beckham Jr.  This year, it's Doug Baldwin.

Could also be a case of Dez expecting to be paid more $ than teams think he is worth. It is still early. If injuries happen to WRs during TC or they aren't performing up to expectations, Dez may get some calls. A little humility on Dez's part would not hurt his cause either.

Agreed.

Always loved Brandon Marshall. Two years ago, this would have mattered. A lot. It really doesn't today. Marshall won't impact Baldwin, Lockett, or even Brown. The first two are far better than Marshall, and Brown is a completely different type of player. Marshall can't do what those three can. I don't know how much value guys like Darboh, Dickson, and Vannett had, but they have a little less right now. The former won't get many 4-wide reps, and the latter two won't see many targets in the red zone.

This is what I think of Marshall as well.

It took me 12 hours to actually notice this thread but I am totally cool with Joe setting the example for how such news should be shared in the forum. FWIW I did change the title of Jaelen Strong thread as this seemed like something that was important to you. If I find the time I will go through my topics and change those titles to be more current as well.

Marshall is not the #2 WR for the Seahawks. He might not even make the team.
