Chargers To Los Angeles: The Foul Deed Is Done! (1 Viewer)

If this deal happens. Even if not this year. Do they combine teams to 52 players? Would we see Gurley/Keenan Allen/Ladarius Green play together?

Seems like Spanos has gotten himself into a pickle. He can move and be the Clippers of the NFL. He can stay and have the SD market mostly to himself. In either case he has to worry about the Raiders taking the spot he doesn't choose. The Chargers would be even more of an afterthought if the Raiders move to southern California again. Given that, seems like if he's worried about fan support he'd stay in SD. If he's just worried about franchise sales value, he should move to L.A. And if he does do that, I wonder if he's angling towards actually selling the team. From what people have posted in threads on this board, it sounds like his family might not be able to pay the tax hit that would come if they inherit the team.
Seems to me if the chargers stay in sd. The fans will keep coming. Someone texted me today that the copyright has been filed for the la chargers. Sigh. They are moving and will be the clippers
He has to hope the Raiders don't go to San Diego or he will be left with no fan base at all. In San Diego he at least still has the current Chargers fans.
Exactly. If he's moving to L.A., I bet he cashes out within 5 years.
sounds a lot like art modell. move the team, sell the team
How old is Spanos?
65 years old. Looks good for his age really. An uglier Jim Belushi, but still.

The NFL kinda put him in his place. He didn't want to share the stadium with the Rams, maybe because he knew Kroenke would get all the marbles, which he wound up getting. Spanos wanted a deal with the Raiders. Like how he would be able to split a pie with Mark Davis I dunno. What I find odd is why go share the LA Coliseum now, instead of playing one more season at the Murph? Wouldn't it cost more money just to move up to LA without a real locker room and all that when you have it at the Murph? It's a real shady sort of thing the NFL put out there between the Chargers and the Raiders here. I think it's awesome, but it does put the Chargers in more of an odd situation than the Raiders.
Alex Spanos owns the team and he's 92.

The Spanos family will have to cough up a fair amount of taxes when he dies which is why the suggestions that they might just sell.

The family is worth about $1B I think, but between the relocation fee, taxes on Alex Spanos' death, and buying into a $2B+ project there's a lot of loans in their future.

Jeez they announce they're staying in SD for another year and not a single post. They really don't have any fans in SD, do they.
Like I always say, nobody cares about the Chargers
There's a lot of bad blood between Dean Spanos and the Chargers fans/players. His father was pretty well liked, but Dean is a complete ###.
Exactly.

San Diego will never be Green Bay as far as an entire community supporting the team, but there are plenty of passionate, die-hard fans. The problem is that we all know by now that we are pawns in Dean's stadium/cash grab. It's hard to get fired up when you know you're being used and that the future isn't secure beyond this year. I'm glad they are back for another year, but recognize that I shouldn't celebrate too much.

I checked out the land they supposedly bought in Santa Ana as a temporary practice facility. Looks tiny. I suppose as a temporary location it may be feasible, but certainly not enough room to host fans to be able to watch them practice/training camp or anything like that. Seems more like a purchase meant to try to provoke some public funding to SD to try to keep them.

I don't think Spanos wants to go to LA now that means partnering with Kroenke. I think he will try to use it as leverage to get something done in SD and then if that fails then he will swallow up and head north.

I posted a link in one of these threads, but the estate taxes related to the team are expected to be around $140M. That is of course on top of the $550M relocation fee plus another ~$100M for moving, rebranding, etc. if he moves to LA. If he goes in as Kroenke's tenant, he won't be sharing in all of the LA revenue that makes LA so appealing to Kroenke, and it doesn't seem that he can afford to go in as Kroenke's full partner, since that adds another $1.3B+ in debt to the other ~$800M already mentioned.

He would spend much less to stay in San Diego, and it isn't clear that his revenue stream will be lower than as Kroenke's tenant.

I believe NFL changed the rules, allowing a trust to own NFL teams. That estate tax thing is going away i think

I live in San Diego. It is NOT going to happen. The Rams themselves right now are already hurting in the ratings department, and this is their first year in Los Angeles! Do you think Dean Spanos is going to pay $500-600 million in just relocation fees? Let alone the cost of moving and doing business? Then he'd have to chip in to pay for rent in LA? Compete against the Rams for $$$ and then hope anyone in LA wants to buy tickets to see them play.  And if the Chargers move....It opens up the San Diego market. Imagine Spanos moves to LA, they flop, another team moves into San Diego market. He loses his San Diego market, he now is stuck in LA, where two teams, actually four teams have left over the last 50 plus years.....one team has just come back and is already failing......and like I said....He has no where to go. On top of already forking out almost billion for the right to move to LA? HA!

Sure! That sounds like the move of a very conservative owner who is cash strapped and poor in terms of being an owner compared to other owners. Hmmmmm NO!

It's all about the sticker value of the team. Forbes has the Rams at #7 for valuation at 2.90 billion, they have the Chargers at #21 at 2.08 billion. That's why he'll move the team.

I know a surveyor that told me he's working at the Qualcomm Stadium site. He says he was told it's for hotels and retail stores... He could be full of crap but why?

They were talking about this on 1090 this morning. Something like 4 city councilmen have put together a plan to rework the Qualcomm site to have a new stadium plus entertainment/media complexes like they have in Foxborough. The Chargers have had nothing to do with this plan however. It's yet another last ditch effort to keep them there that they're not driving.

Don't forget SDSU...smaller venue that could be used for concerts and tractor pulls and whatnot....Chargers to LA is a done deal imo.

I'd agree with you if it weren't for both his sons running the team. One son does the financials, the other is the head of scouting and player personnel.

It's his kids entire lives. He isn't going to sell the team.

I'm sure the kids would rather have a 2.9 billion asset than a 2.08 billion asset to inherit.

One thing I've learned this year is that the Rams presence in LA is definitely going to start hurting the Chargers. I live in the IE, and I didn't think I'd miss out on many Charger games because the Rams are in the NFC, but I was wrong. I haven't kept track, but I think I've missed about 4-5 games this year. I don't know why the Rams presence changes things, but it seems like it does. In the past it was rare that we didn't get the games. I don't think it will be long before we start seeing more youth teams change to the Rams.

Because this happens as a matter of course at any older site.

Add in the year round hotel market in San Diego and you have fuel on the fire.

Separately, Im a hospitality real estate specialist. Operator selection , JV creation and investment monitoring. If they need another pair of hands.......

You must not be familiar with John Spanos. He has spent his entire life trying to learn the NFL game. He has flown all over the U.S. since he was a kid, learning to scout players. He isn't going to give it up. He's already rich.....he loves running the team. You're thinking this through from your POV.....and I agree, I would sell it too....but this isn't going to happen. They aren't going to sell the team. You're completely wrong. Only caveat I could see happening is Dean is sick of dealing with the NFL and moves to LA and sells....but once again, other owners won't let that happen.....they don't want the Chargers to leave SD....they definitely wouldn't want two teams in LA....one with a new owner. None of this makes sense....that is if you've been closely following this saga.

I'm not implying that the kids will sell the team. I'm saying that they'd rather own an asset worth 2.9 billion than one worth 2.08 billion, and get to play in a brand new stadium to boot, in a bigger market even if they're sharing it. As for the rest, why the heck would the NFL owners approve the Chargers moving to L.A. if they weren't o.k. with them leaving San Diego?

So who moves to San Diego now? Jax?
I don't see the NFL putting another team in SD with two teams in LA. While SD is a great city and is large in population, it is a relatively small TV market. And I suspect that one or both LA teams are going to struggle in attendance and ratings as it is.

Yeah, it's comical. They could care less about football in LA and now there are 2 teams. When they see it's a miserable failure, watch the Rams move to SD. That would be hilarious. Spanos would be standing in LA with his thumb up his ### wondering what happened.

It's amazing to me that anyone thinks LA can support two mediocre-at-best franchises......haven't we been down this road before?

What a disaster for the Chargers.

1) SD will never support a LA team. They just lost the bulk of their fanbase.

2) Real football fans in LA will never support a Charger team. Their loyalty is already with the Raiders and Rams.

3) The bulk of LA fanbase is all about the bandwagon. The Chargers need to win a Super Bowl to get them on board.

4) Now they are the junior partner in a stadium. In the meantime, they will struggle to fill out a 33K soccer stadium until it is built.

5) The Chargers thought they had a problem when they played the Raiders in SD. Now, it goes from 75% Raider fans to 99% Raider fans (I am sure the Charger players have family they might show up) when they play the Raiders.

I guess I'm the only one who is glad that the chargers are back in their rightful home, from whence they were ripped away after just one season.

If they brought back the 1960 logo I'd reopen the case.
