***Chicago Bears Thread*** A dynasty begins... (9 Viewers)

I feel extremely discouraged right now. For a team that was improved on paper, there wasn't much to be excited about after week 1. Roshon in garbage time was the highlight of that game. I guess Darnell Wright had a decent first game as well. No sacks, but 5 pressures.

I really want to have faith in Ryan Poles and realize this rebuild was going to take time, but I don't have faith in the direction of this team right now. The Bears may have the weakest trenches in the entire NFL. We knew this going into the offseason and didn't do nearly enough to address the issue. They are going to have to spend a lot of draft capital to even get respectable up front. I don't know if Poles knows what he is doing anymore.

Fields has no time, and the DL can't get any sort of pressure. Love had all day to find receivers. The secondary looked terrible, but we can't blame them for that.

Fields has a ton to prove. Eberflus has to step up. No guarantee either is part of the long term plans. Its week 1 and the rest of the NFL already has the blueprint for how to make the Bears look silly.

This team still looks like this despite spending almost 100 million in FA. Both lines were an embarrassment.
* The OTs looked like turnstiles.
* The DEs had zero pass rush. Love was back there knitting a sweater with all the time he had.
* The DTs got blown off the ball constantly. Boy, sure am glad they didn't take that bum Jalen Carter. 🤨
* Claypool is a dog. Dude puts in zero effort and constantly has boo-boo face if he's not getting the ball.
* I'm becoming convinced Fields just isn't the guy. I know he didn't have a lot of time, but he never even attempted to throw the ball downfield. It was the 'Captain Check-down' show all day.
* Last, and most importantly, they looked like a loser team sitting on that bench in the 4th quarter. Zero fire. Roshon Johnson looked like the only person that wanted to be out there. Even the announcers mentioned it. The culture needs to change.
The only argument I have here is that Getsy's playcalling and the turnstile OL dictated Fields' lack of downfield throws. There were so many bubble screens called!!!

It could be coaching, I dunno. I will say though that this doesn't look like the same Justin Fields I saw in college. Dude has no confidence. They HAVE to open up the offense. Defenses are killing them because they know they can play 8 guys (or more) within 5 yards with no repercussions.

Agree with @InDitkaWeTrust that the playcalling stunk! I was really disappointed with the offensive performance because I thought they would be improved - especially Fields and the O line. Fields still stares down receivers on some plays and the line was getting beaten badly by a good Packers D. They should have tried some down field throws to Moore to keep the D honest. As for the Bears D I thought they were a complete train wreck last year. Against the Packers they missed a lot of assignments and looked bad at times but appear to at least be a little more talented. Maybe they need some time to gel with all their new pieces but they still need more talent on that side of the ball. I have been saying all off-season that I think people are overstating their chances of making a big turnaround this year. Obviously they should be improved over their 3-14 season because they have improved their roster but I would temper expectations. They don't have a chance at sniffing the playoffs unless the NFC sucks and a losing team gets in. If Fields doesn't improve they will have a top 10 pick.

Trade the first pick in the draft for Moore and he gets TWO TARGETS!

That trade for Claypool is going to go down as an all time bad one.

Let's go back to the #1 Pick overall...
A lot of us questioned going to far too fast with Fields
It feels like they could be on the path to more double digit losing seasons.
But what do you do, you can't up and bail on him after how amazing part of his game looked last year. I'm not a JF fan-boy at all, but you had to try and see what else was there, and need to keep trying for the season. They didn't do anything in the off-season to lock them into Fields and next year and they may have 2 top 5 picks to either build the DL if he works out, or be in a good spot to replace him if he just can't make it as a QB.

Justin Fields pass chart from Week 1. Just 4 attempts of 37 past 10 yards. 2/4 on those throws with a TD and an INT.

Justin Fields vs Green Bay Packers 2023 (Full Game, Every Throw/Run) (5:52 video)
His 4 throws past 10 yards are at 0:14 (complete), 1:36 (incomplete), 3:03 (TD), and 3:16 (INT).

Also a video that I haven't watched yet.
The QB School: Justin Fields Week 1 vs Green Bay Analysis (1:00:09 video)
Its probably a similar video to one I watched yesterday, but the analyst broke down at least 4 plays where Fields missed the open WR in his reads. Took a couple sacks on those plays or went to the checkdown way too fast. Sort of implying he is gun shy to throw the ball.

Then I hear Flus' radio interview where he repeated multiple times about taking what the defense gives them in the passing game and not forcing the issue. But like damn... you were just embarrassed because you didn't force anything downfield. So now I question if Getsy is in Fields' ear about how its ok to keep taking the checkdown.

That gameplan was horrible and frustrating to hear the coaches talk about it like it wasn't a steaming pile.

I think it was the right move. Young isn't the QB I'd want to go all in necessarily either. He'd be crushed playing behind that OL.

What is frustrating is that JF has elite running skills as a QB, and the Bears didn't build that into the gameplan at all. Its great they added weapons to get him to develop into more of a pocket passer and want to see growth there, but they literally called a single designed run for him this week which was a 4th and 1 QB sneak that he didn't get.

They design a gameplan that plays to his weaknesses and then wonder why he isn't developing.

Only concern I have there is the total number of carries getting too high. From what I heard he had 2 designed runs and 7 breakdown runs for a total of 9 "carries". I don't want to see him getting too many more per game, approaching 15 and you'd really be getting towards RB load PLUS making him play QB, he'd never last. Really they need to be able to invert those designed runs and play breakdown runs, but until the actually BLOCK that won't be happening.
So I don't really know an answer, but don't see how they can call too many more designed runs until they can limit the I designed.

I'm just so damn pissed about this OL, they are one guard down, so not THAT injured, and they looked like total crap.
I'm actually not too angry about the DL, because I thought they made it clear this year they were patching the DL, basically starting a bunch of backups again, while actually fixing the OL with the day 1 signing and day 1 draft pick.
OL has to look better than that or the are going to have to try and fix it again and we are set back another year.

Did you guys notice who has been completely unblockable his first two games?

Jalen Carter was the easiest slam dunk in the draft and we had zero interest. At one of our biggest need positions mind you.
I was roasted by the other Bears fans when I called then out for their gutless drafting. Carter was gift wrapped and put under the Christmas tree for us but, apparently, the front office thought the coaching staff was too weak to 'control ' him.
This team makes me sick. My worst nightmare right now is that they give Fields a long-term contract and we get what the NYG are getting with Daniel Jones.

So how early is too early to clean house on the coaching staff? Getsy is like a dang apprentice learning on the job here. Who in the world runs back to back unsuccessful screen passes backed up at the goal line? I was also hoping Flus would have a positive effect on the defense, which hasn't happened. It seems he's getting close to losing the locker room and heading toward a death spiral.

Bears are going to lose vs KC next week. 0-3 book it.

The next two games look winnable though. Vs. Denver and @ Washington. If somehow this team goes 0-5, I see no reason to let this coaching staff finish the season. Flus is really pissing me off with his post game interviews. He comes across as clueless on the offensive side of the ball. Like he really thinks they have good gameplans, but just had a couple bad plays that cost them.

Poles has also had the shine knocked off him. I liked what he did last year to rebuild this team, but his spending and talent evaluation are questionable. I worry this team might not have a direction any longer.

After the Panthers loss there are now nine 0-2 teams in the NFL.

Of those 9, the Bears have given up the most points and have the worst point differential.

Only the NYG have given up more points and have a worse differential, but they have somehow won a game...

It amazes me people are blaming the play calling. Couple of thoughts about the last Bears game:
They only had one possession in the first quarter and scored a TD
Second possession 3rd and 12. DJ Moore is wide open and clapping his hands for the ball in the middle of the field. Fields looks past him, holds the ball. Then moves into the DE for a sack. Terrible play for Fields.
Third possession. One hops a pass to clay pool, run for no gain, WR screen, punt
Fourth possession. Just over 2 minutes before half. Fields makes a couple good throws and gets them to FG range. Then a couple terrible plays for Fields that’s mind boggling. On this play, DJ Moore is wide open in the flat. He has Roschon Johnson wide open busted coverage for a TD (no one within 10 yards), the TE gets open, everyone is open. He also has a pretty good pocket to make a throw. For some reason, he steps up into the pressure and runs into the DL for a sack. It’s truly incredible he ran directly into him. Then he takes another sack on third down.
Bottom line, he’s not seeing the field and the play calling is getting people open consistently but he’s too hesitant to pull the trigger. When he throws on time it’s usually fairly accurate.

Here is the play I’m talking about, there are several more.
Fields missing everyone open

Only one team in the History of the NFL has lost 12 straight games while giving up at least 25 points in each.

The 22-23 Bears.

If you're not questioning the play calling, you're not watching the games. Do yourself a favor and watch The QB School analysis of Fields for week 1 and week 2. There are so many times he questions WTF the offense is trying to do, what the scheme might be and how the OL is supposed to do their job given the position they are out in. Dude calls out some of the plays in Getsy's week 2 script as straight from 1990s high school play books. Contrast it against Cousins' week 2 analysis.

Fields played poorly in week 2 without a doubt, but let's not pretend that Andy Reid is running a beautiful offense in Chicago and Fields is just mucking it up.

DC Alan Williams is suspected of being caught with child pornography and has resigned.
nuts...not sure how true it is but read that his home may have been raided by the FBI this morning
I saw that it was reported to the team by Peanut Tillman who is now an FBI agent?! That's nuts (pun intended).
what? is this for real?

Bears are projected in one calculator to have the 3rd and 4th pick in the upcoming draft. They’ve had the 3rd and 4th overall picks once before, and drafted Gale Sayers and Duck Butkus. It’s the time a team has drafted two hall of famers in the first round of a draft.

This is going to be a bloodbath. The coach and GM didn't pick Fields. The new president didn't pick Eberflus and Poles. What a DISASTER.

You actually seeing that somewhere? Haven't seen that one.
Honestly, I've seen it multiple places, but I'm just reading what other people are posting or saying. I probably shouldn't have posted the part regarding CP as it is not verified. The Bears are denying there were any raids of Halas Hall or Williams' home at this point.

Bears cut Peterman. That leaves only Fields and Bagent on the roster. Weird. Fields, who's currently struggling and Bagent who's a rookie from a DII school. WTH is going on??

Wild story. Bears are a mess of an organization.

It’s the lack of establishing our best weapon in the run game. If you see your QB struggling as a play caller. You have 2 choices, keep calling the same stuff or change it up. For whatever reason, the latter isn’t happening.

I think the Bears should be calling way more designed runs with JF and more option type plays. Make it come out quick, stop making him drop back and do what he does worst. Make the D fear his legs.

With that said, having a few top 5-10 picks in the upcoming draft might be the way to go. Bears are lacking talent.

Correct answer, CFG. This offseason should have been all about exploring and perfecting RPO and designed runs. That makes it so much easier on Fields as a passer allowing him to work on mechanics a little at a time. But no, we F with everything and expect him to be a god-tier pocket passer after a single offseason of change. SMH.

Just a joke of a Franchise.

Probably going to lose to the Broncos next week who just had 70 posted on them.

This franchise is so bad, if they do get the #1 pick Caleb is going back to school.

I quit watching at the beginning of last year and don't plan to start back. 1-16 over their last 17. No thanks. I have better things to do in life. Not that the McCaskeys care.
