Who are they giving thanks to?
All the turkeys out there.Who are they giving thanks to?
The fact that they don't have to go to church.Who are they giving thanks to?
and turkeys, booze, football, and bookies...Federal holidays.
Nope. The emotions and expressions of thanks must be reserved for a deity, otherwise it is just a soulless attempt to feel human which no atheist is capable of.I don't, but can't you be thankful without being thankful to God?
I'm thankful I've got great parents and friends. I'm also thankful for my truck, and the fact that the Chiefs might make the playoffs.

dayum that spinnerbait is awfully enticingThey give thanks to beings that actually exist rather than a diety that only provides a false sense of meaning to their otherwise empty lives.

I am thankful the Lions won't be an embarrassment. They will likely lose, but it should be a good game.

Well in that case I'm all in.Google celebrates it, so it must be some evil pagan holiday from Satan with socialist elitist undertones.
No, she's an idiot.
I'd just add I love the weather this time of year, the seasonal beers that are available, and the fact that it always results in a 4+ day weekend. It really is the best holiday by far.kutta said:Thanksgiving is the best holiday by far.No cards or gifts. Awesome food. Family and friends over. And football. I don't think they could design a more perfect holiday.
I do try to pause and reflect for a moment on all the things I am thankful for - just sort of an annual reminder to not take everything I have for granted, because it's easy to forget that. But mostly I just enjoy it.I don't give thanks to anyone or anything on Thanksgiving. I just enjoy it.

Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday.
Actually, Thanksgiving's roots are in the pagan harvest holidays/festivals:Thanksgiving is religious?
Thomas Jefferson claimed he could not set aside a day of thanks because of the First Amendment:"The Pilgrims, who in 1621 observed our initial Thanksgiving holiday, were not a people especially enthusiastic about the celebration of festivals. In fact these austere and religious settlers of America would have been dismayed had they known of the long and popular history of harvest festivals, of which their Thanksgiving was only the latest. .... The harvest festival, with its attendant rites, seems to have spread out from ... Egypt and Syria and Mesopotamia. The first or the last sheaf of wheat was offered to the `Great Mother' .... Astarte [equivalent to Ishtar and Eastre] was the Earth Mother of the ancient Semites; to the Phrygians she was Semele; under the name of Demeter she was worshiped by the Greeks at the famous Eleusinian Mysteries..." - pp. 271-272, Celebrations - The Complete Book of American Holidays, Robert J. Myers, Doubleday & Co., 1972
