12 teams. 0.5PPR. Start 1/2/3/1/1/1 for QB/RB/WR/TE/K/DEF. 22 man rosters. 3rd year of league. I've tried my best to acquire as many stud as possible then full the gaps from FA/WW. Have been fortunate to pick several players off waivers (all my TEs, Richardson, Wilson, Roberts). Also have been able to do several trades for future picks that have landed in top half, allowing me to draft Julio and Martin. Should have 2 top 6 picks this year (which I am working to trade for players/2014 picks). I think my biggest need is RB, but hard to trade in this league and draft is not looking promising. Worst mistakes were trading Charles after his injury last year and picking Vereen over Ridley when deciding which one to trade away.

I've made several changes to my roster since the end of the year. Acquired Kaepernick from WW right before he blew up. Also snagged Bryce Brown.

Traded Kaep, Forte and Harvin for Charles, Morris and a 2014 1st - did this to shore up my RBs

Traded Roberts for Ingram

Traded Ryan for Brees - I like Brees better

Traded Schaub to a QB needy team + 2014 2nd for a 2014 1st

Traded Ingram, Antonio Brown and Rudolph for Pierce and Larry Fitzgerald - I think Fitz has a bounceback year and like Pierce more than Ingram (and can wait)

Trade SJax, Rodgers and my 2014 1st for Matt Ryan, 1.04 and 2014 2nd - new owner came in and needed RBs; he has RG3

Traded Wilson/2.07 for 1.01, 2.01 - had this trade working, which is why I traded for Ryan. Ryan and Wilson in the same tier for me.

Traded 1.01/1.04/2.01 for David Wilson/1.06/2.06 - like Wilson better than anything at 1.01 and can wait for him to develop (if needed); couldn't pass up a potential young stud RB

Traded 2.06/4.12 for Ruben Randle and 3.01 - I think Randle has potential and the price was dirt cheap IMO

Traded DX for 2.10 and 2014 2nd

Traded D. Richardson for Owen Daniels and a conditional 2014 2nd (based on Richardson's 2013 performance) - needed a backup TE and I'm not sold on anyone in STL

In the draft I selected Hopkins (1.06), Woods (2.10) and Terrance Williams (3.01)

So heading into the year, my roster is now:

Thought I would bump this 6 weeks into the season, and share one dynasty team I have.

This is a team in a writer's league that I took over at the end of last season. They had made the playoffs the prior season but I could tell that within a year or two, it was going to need some serious work. Here is the roster I took over (23 player max)(1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex):

QB: Mike Vick, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow

RB: Ray Rice, Arian Foster, Reggie Bush, Steven Jackson, Bernard Pierce, DuJuan Harris, Mike Tolbert

WR: Reggie Wayne, Stevie Johnson, Stephen Hill, Denarius Moore, Santonio Holmes, Travis Benjamin, Doug Baldwin, Lance Moore, Dwayne Harris

TE: Brent Celek, Rob Housler, Jacob Tamme, Taylor Thompson

After an offseason (and six weeks) of trading, drafting, and waiver moves, here is where I stand:

QB: Russell Wilson, Mike Vick, Brock Osweiler, Kirk Cousins

RB: Gio Bernard, Le'Veon Bell, Ryan Mathews, Donald Brown, DuJuan Harris

WR: Julio Jones, Stevie Johnson, Stephen Hill, Terrance Williams, Santonio Holmes, Lance Moore, Doug Baldwin, Brandon LaFell

TE: Brent Celek, Mychal Rivera

I only have 8 of the same players, having turned over 15 players in less than a year. It's still a work in progress. My pick should be a top 2 pick, and I've picked up another 1st rounder that should be in the top half.

I've accomplished my goals of picking up an elite WR (traded for Julio after his injury), a good young QB with potential to be great, and a young pass catching back with potential to be elite. I still have a need at WR2 and TE. Looking to trade Stevie, Santonio, and Lance for young players with upside.

This is probably my worst dynasty team, but it's nice to have a challenge in a serious league. This is also the only team where I'm probably going to be picking in top half of rookie drafts, which I like.

Ended up winning this league this year.

Made a trade with some conditional picks that at the end of the season became Hopkins + 2.04 for Ryan Mathews. Made the move early in the season after Vereen went down and D Wilson imploded. Was never a believer in Hopkins as a top flight WR and thought Mathews had high-end RB2/low-end RB1 potential. Ended up paying big dividends for me with his strong end-of-year performance, particularly after Martin went on IR.

Flipped Owen Daniels for a 2nd (ended up 2.07), after acquiring Reed of the WW, to a TE needy team.

Traded Cincy DEF for Seattle DEF by moving down from 2nd to 3rd in 2014 and 2015. Wanted to acquire the best DEF. Ended up moving down from 2.07 to 3.02. The team I traded with has been historically bad (finished at 1.02 two years running now), so I think moving from 2nd to 3rd in 2015 won't be a big move.

Gave a 2nd for Tom Brady. Guy had R Wilson and was willing to move Brady; figured it was a cheap price to pay and will look to flip him or one of my other QBs. This ended up being 2.05.

Traded Brady and Woods for Welker and 2015 3rd. By this point I had lost Julio and Cobb to injury and Fitz was gimpy with his hammy. Looking to add Welker to shore up my depleted WR corps. View Woods as a WR2/3 in dynasty. In hindsight, did nothing for my team given Welker's injuries, but he adds solid veteran WR depth to my team for 2014.

After the season, traded Terrence Williams and Shane Vereen for 2.03, 2.06 and a 2015 1st. Torn on the trade; looking to buy into 2015's draft while also freeing up roster space. I am not sold on Vereen as anything more than a RB2/3 at this point. Williams could be very solid in Dallas and I could be sorry I traded him. I hope to use the two 2nds to move up this year or package in a trade for another 2015 1st.

Best WW pickup was Reed, by far. Did pick up Edelman early but dropped him mid-season after he went cold. That was a mistake. At the end of the season I did add Riley Cooper (someone dropped him) and Toby Gerhart via WW and Andre Roberts via FA.

Two trade updates:

Traded Kaep, Forte and Harvin for Charles, Morris and a 2014 1st - did this to shore up my RBs - ended up being the 1.06

Traded Schaub to a QB needy team + 2014 2nd for a 2014 1st - ended up being the 1.01 (ca-ching)

So now I have:
1.01
1.06

4.05
4.12

Reed is still on IR and will be activated at the end of the month; I'll probably drop my kicker. I am feeling pretty good about my team and the outlook with having 4 of the top 18 picks in this draft class. Already have two 2015 1st at this point as well.

Remembered this post and was curious about what I'd said, if I'd followed through, and how it looked with the benefit of hindsight... mostly I did what I thought I would and don't have any regrets so far.

Obviously getting Garcon and Mendenhall back should help next year.

Check. Both players should be helpful as 2s or 2/3s.

In the leagues where Rivers is my QB1 and don't have a strong #2 I'll need to shore up the position before next year. I still think he's fine and it's the team around him that's a mess, but I'm not willing to bet a season on it. Freeman is someone I've been targeting as a nice QBBC complement to Rivers with some possible upside, but some of his owners are valuing him as a future stud right now so I haven't gotten far with that.

It was interesting to see that at the time I wrote this post I only owned Freeman in 2 of 12 leagues. After his disastrous end of season I managed to snag him in a half dozen leagues and now have him in 8/11. Great example of people's mental rankings being way too volatile IMO. Basically he's 25 and for some reason is valued slightly below what he's already done from ages 22-24. See the FBG projections for example -- after finishing QB14, QB17 and QB13 (ppg) his average projection is QB17. Barring injury or murder convictions the worst case is that he's a high end QB2 for the next five years. That's what I paid for. Any upside that comes with the stability in Tampa and the possible maturation of Freeman is free.

I'll be holding MJD in those four leagues even if he doesn't come back until 2013. He's got the profile of someone who could easily play until 30+ and he looked pretty good before the foot injury. I think the average VBD from a player like him at 28 outweighs anything I'd get back in terms of a starter.

Still tons of risk, but so far, so good. A one year return to the top-10 wouldn't shock me but most likely non-injury case is strong RB2 production. Which is definitely better than what you could sell him for after the injury.

If Cecil Shorts pans out I've got great depth at WR and shouldn't be forced to make a WR move for the foreseeable future. I'm not sure anything helps a team more than nailing a solid starter from the WW in a majority of leagues.

I'm higher on Shorts than most -- he's inside my top 20 dynasty WRs -- but even if he's just 2/3 type guy the point above is still true. Landing a good/decent starter off the WW takes so much pressure off your team depth.

A few guys I expect to be be targeting this off-season include Rivers and Fitz. I think Freeman and Stewart may be too expensive now. Gates is also someone I can see buying if the price is right.

Obviously bought Freeman but didn't go after Rivers and Gates (San Diego is still a mess) or Stewart (situation/injury fatigue finally set in). Did land Fitz in three leagues, but paid for him with Victor Cruz in all three cases. I'm close to 50/50 on those two, but do like having one player to worry about instead of two.

I think I'll also stand pat with my mostly mid and late round firsts. I don't see anyone coming out that I'm dying to land right now and the picks between about six and fifteen are my favorite part of the draft most years anyhow.

Standing pat at the back of the 1st round worked out as I landed C Michael between 10 and 15 in most of my rookie drafts.
Funny to look back at this after the season. I got almost everything I wrote about wrong, but still won six of my eleven leagues and finished runner-up in three more. Which really goes to the value of my general strategy -- which is to make sure that your mistakes can't hurt you very much (buy cheap and never give up starters to do it) and to be patient with players you think are talented.

Looking at my rosters from 15 months ago (middle of the 2012 season) one thing that stands out is that they've been very stable:

My starter-quality guys (# of leagues)

Foles (9) +9

Roethlisberger (6)

Rivers (4)

Bradford (3) +3

Freeman (2)

Rodgers (1)

The biggest movement is at QB. I didn't want to go into 2013 with only Roeth and Rivers so I traded for Bradford and/or Freeman in a bunch of leagues. Obviously that didn't work out so well. Bradford was startable until he got hurt, but Freeman imploded and is off my rosters now. Win some/lose some.

Fortunately Rivers and Roeth both had good seasons and I had Foles rostered in almost every league. So by the end of the season QB had gone from a question mark to a +VBD asset.

Other than that big changes were to add Charles Clay in a bunch of leagues (WW pickup) and cut/trade Gresham and Bennett (the latter being a mistake).

I also traded Victor Cruz for Larry Fitzgerald in three leagues -- which turned out to be a lateral move for 2013.

There are some other vets that faded into oblivion (McGahee, Gates), but overall I'm surprised at how little roster turnover I've had in terms of starters.

Obviously Foles, Charles, Bush, Lynch, Thomas, Andre, Fitz, VJax, Garcon and Clay were the backbone of my playoff push. Gronk chipped in with a nice midseason run too, but wasn't available at the end of the year.

Not really very interesting to anyone but me probably since most of my roster building was so long ago and I've pretty much stood pat for the last couple seasons. But it is cool to look back and see what I was thinking.

Looking ahead the biggest Q has been what to do with Foles. I did a huge project looking at every QB season since 1978 where the QB was a rookie in '78 or later and threw 200+ passes. Hopefully I'll post a thread on some of that stuff since there was all kinds of interesting info. But in terms of Foles... the short answer is that I think his floor is Esiason and Aikman (solid to good FF starters when healthy), his most likely outcome is Roethlisberger without all the early-career screw-ups, and his ceiling is Brady. So a pretty good range and despite an almost certain regression in 2014 I'm planning to hold.

Other than that, I like what's happened with Christine Michael since I drafted him (rookie picks #10-15 in eight leagues) and expect his value to skyrocket at some point when he gets his first stretch as a starter. Depending on my team needs when that happens I'll either happily ride his production or flip him.

The only other elite prospect (IMO) that I'm rostering is Ladarius Green -- in five leagues. I think he'll basically be an elite WR getting points as a FF TE.

So basically I expect more stability and not much roster churn among my starters for the next year or so. Hopefully I'll have some lesser prospect guys break out and give me more depth (like Foles and Clay did), but either way I plan to ride this current group through at least 2014.

I do like this year's rookie crop a ton as well. I only have two picks earlier than #12 so it's an especially nice year to have a bumper crop of rookies and I expect to see players I like deep into the second round (or even the early third round) this year.

ETA: some 2nd tier non-rookie prospects I like a lot are: LaMichael James (5), Marlon Brown (8), Stedman Bailey (5), and Quinton Patton (4)

I would post, but both of mine are IDP and it seems as though most here do not play IDP so I doubt many would find my roster construction, maintenance, and planning useful.
:hey: Post away. Some want to see IDP.
Both of mine are a little goofy, one is newer so there's been less moves so I'll do that one now. Will look at the other sometime this week.3rd year

45 player-12 team dynasty-keep 30

1 qb/2-3 rb/2-3 wr/1-2 te/1 k/2-3 dl/2-3 lb/2-3 db

PPR/all TD = 6/no bonuses/tackle heavy/return yardage - int, fum, kick, and punt/tfl's

8 player college taxi squad, redraft annually, no moves permitted in season, all players eligible for NFL draft must be promoted or dropped/the rest can be retained at the draft pick used on them previously or dropped

My strategy has evolved, but basically this is what it comes down to

*throw darts in college draft at potential stars, a blue chip frosh > solid Senior - trend towards offense

*priority #1 - get the best starting offensive lineup possible, try not to go old at any position but don't say no to value either

*priority #2 - get a few young core pieces in place on defense

*priority #3 - get a few cheap vets to backup on offense, guys that usually go sooner but in a dyno will be cheaper

*priority #4 - throw darts at young potential afterthoughts on offense

*priority #5 - mine for gold in IDP

*then - be proactive on waivers, focus on early round picks/guys with positive camp buzz but without a short term opportunity

*trading - as depth builds trade older starters (but not stars) to get younger or fill gaps, try to take advantage of desperate owners with short term voids in their lineup

As my team develops the idea is to build the offense and once that's in place look to make an elite defense, in the meantime I churn through IDP's much more quickly. The last piece of my team I will address is DB, can find plug and play's once Peanut's days are over - Winfield's almost already are.

Mario Williams - dropped him the year he moved to LB

Reggie Bush

Bradford

Other meaningful picks- D Levy, McCluster, Tulloch, EJ Henderson, Kampman, Jared Cook, Favre, Weatherspoon, E Sanders, Peanut, Gettis, Winfield, Angerer, Casey, Victor Cruz, D Alexander, and actually drafted Andre Brown too (dropped before week 1 though, on and off my roster throughout)

2010 College draft key picks - Trent Richardson (1.5), Andrew Luck (2.8), LMJ (3.5), Gabbert (7.5)

2010 key waiver pick up's - Kevin Burnett, Desmond Bishop, Jason Babin, Plaxico Burress, Jerome Simpson

Between 2010 and 2011 - traded for Marcedes Lewis, gave up pick upgrades - oof. Traded Tulloch and got back a future 1 that was used on Fleener.

Dumb drops before 2011 - Cruz(!!!!!!), McCluster

Key Veteran Draft pick up's pre 2011 - Robert Quinn, Tamme (mostly a poor effort)

2011 College draft - also, poor effort

This is when things started getting better

2011 key waiver pick up's - Derrick Morgan, Dunlap, KJ Wright, Pitta, Ayers, Randy Moss, J Cameron, D Baldwin

Dumb drops during 2011 - None!

Smart drop pre 2012 - Gabbert

Dump drops - Pitta (had too many TE's), Ayers (too many LB's - shoulda dumped Levy and kept him)

Pre Draft trade - J Stew/Bishop (post injury pre IR)/R Quinn/Marcedes/J Simpson for Witten/S Moss/D Butler/L Fletcher

2012 college draft (I think I nailed it) - Sammy Watkins, Geno, Marquise Lee, Ryan Swope, CJ Mosely, Sefarian-Jenkins, Kevin Minter, A Dobson

2012 Vet draft adds - Fleener, AJ Jenkins, James Michael Johnson, S Nicholas, Kaepernick, Dwayne Harris, Trevathan

2012 trade #1 - dealt JMJ for Benson (too many LB's, no 3rd RB)

#2 - Romo and D Butler for B Lloyd and future #1 (too many LB's, Luck is my franchise QB, Bradford s capable backup - needed a stronger primary flex option)

#3 - Dumervil and N Washington for Dreesen and Tamme (need a #1 DL and better bye week filler at flex, still too many TE's)

Going forward

I'm 6-2 and barring a record setting night by Brees am looking at 7-2 and will be one win away from a playoff spot being clinched (my division is awful). Long term, I think I have a juggernaut on my hands come 2014 or 2015 - should be competitive in 2013 again too, banking on another healthy season from Bush and Witten. Come 2014 or 2015 this is what I see

Luck/Geno

Richardson

Harvin/M Lee/Watkins

Safarian-Jenkins/Fleener

Weatherspoon/Mosely/Minter

More than likely I will be packaging one of those WR's, a LB, and Bradford for a top 10 RB. I may move Geno isntead of Bradford if I must. I think I will have the LB depth to move another horse and I will be banking on one or two of those many WR darts to emerge for my flex spot. In the meantime I think my team is set for this year, the only players I am not looking to trade are mentioned above - the rest, looking for a good spot. Guys like Dumervil, Peanut, London, Witten, etc. may not go anywhere either, they're types I may ride until the wheels fall completely off - doubt I get value for them and feel I already have in-house plan B's.
updated rosterLuck/Kaep/Geno

Need to drop two of the above if I can't cut a deal and need to completely restock my college taxi too. Really like where I am.

Forgot to do my other league last time, will do it tonight or tomorrow. Should be a fun eval exercise.
