Early 2024 Dynasty Rookie Draft Rankings (Single QB) (1 Viewer)

I'm disappointed the most with Bucky Irving's combine. Someone 5'9" 192 has to test better. Me having him in my top 5 has to be reevaluated and I don't usually put a lot of stock in the combine, but instead rather look at what they did in college.
He’s a missed tackle monster, better than Trey Benson and Blake Corum bomined he’s the only running back with 25 broken tackles and 25 FM tackles in 2022 and 2023. Are missed tackles and FM tackles the end all be all? No! But it’s something which adds to other factors for which we’ve yet to see so slow down JU don’t bail on him yet.

And his yards after contact is 3.83!

....but...but....but....the horrible combine stats?
lol I know but he’s better than you’re giving him credit for. His other stats that IMHO are equally if not more important and he performed well at them. I believe you got a good back.

Edit to Add Rounds 3-5 (very preliminary)
First I applaud your efforts. Trying to do this before the draft is gutsy - some would say foolhardy. But I love your style. Like others, I disagree with several of your rankings but like you, I am going to be wrong on mine as well.

Anyway kudos for putting yours out!

Brooks weighed 216lbs at the combine.
Combine weights are deceptive. Players can be. As much as 10-15 pounds off their playing weight depending on their workout regimen used to prepare for the combine
I just noticed that the weight which was listed for him in Socrates list (207) didn't match the one that was given at the combine (216).

I'm assuming most of the other weights were from the combine numbers so was just trying to help with consistency.

That's what I thought. Where did this 207 thingy come from again?
Listed as 207 on the Longhorns website.
I'm more interested in what he weighted at the combine, not some outdated team website.
Why? Do you believe one is inherently a more accurate picture of playing weight than the other? Do you think that there is a huge difference between backs who are 207 and those who are 216? Devon Achane played pretty well at sub 190. So did Warrick Dunn. Barry Sanders 203, Curtis Martin 205, Walter Peyton 200. NFL history is littered with players you might consider too small who succeede

More info is always good. Team websites aren’t always correct but players both gain and lose weight when preparing for the combine. I tend to lean more on tape and stats more than height and weight unless the player is at an extreme (like Bryce Young and Devon Achane).

Brooks isn't a light RB. I'm pretty sure he's a 3 down back once he's 100% and gets the opportunity.

I agree. I just don’t expect him to be right until 2025.

Yeah for sure. A few posts after I did clarify my thoughts on his weight. I suspect he's probably within the 'acceptable' range of weight for a guy we hope has three down potential (205-220).

I also figured his weight could go a variety of ways. It's possible he becomes lighter once his training intensifies, I'd also say it had the chance to increase as he packs on more muscle. Either way it's not much of a concern. He's clearly a good player and seems strong enough.

Thank you @GregoryLKellog. Rankings have no doubt changed considerably over the past several months. My early rankings are, in large part, for reference. I find that it helps me to have a baseline sourced mostly from on-field (college) performance before the media onslaught, that way, when I deviate from my early rankings (and I often deviate considerably), I at least have a reference point. I updated my rankings after the Scouting Combine to take into consideration the weigh-ins and workout numbers, but I have not posted an update with most of the Pro Day numbers.

Perhaps it is a bit foolhardy, but I am quite open to debate and criticism. When I am forced to defend my rankings, I sometimes discover I don't have a solid justification for my rankings, and I make adjustments. I don't care all that much about being right, especially in my early rankings. (I have been playing Fantasy Football for nearly 35 years; I have been wrong more times than I can recall!) I am far more interested in making informed decisions at my Fantasy Drafts!

Time permitting, I will post some new rankings on Sunday or Monday.

That's why I think he's a bargain in the 2nd round of rookie drafts unless Dallas drafts him in the 2nd, which they may not for the reason I gave in the Brooks thread.
"The big question about Dallas and Brooks is they probably want to take a RB that is full-go in 2024 to start the year, not someone that may require some more recovery time from his injury. When I say recovery time, it means Brooks not being 100% to start the year, not necessarily on PUP, but may be. I can see them taking someone like Jaylen Wright or Blake Corum in the 2nd round. Or if they are having a brain fart, Trey Benson."

So on the Brooks topic - if he didn't have the knee injury would he be in the 1.07-1.09 range in SF? Maybe even 1.05 or 6 if he hits a banger landing spot and no injury? As we have seen, most top RBs come back fine from knee injuries, especially when young (he's only 20). Almost everything I have seen and read about him prior to injury was very good.

This seems like a steal right now in rookie drafts, getting an RB like him at the end of the first or even top of the 2nd round in rookie drafts. In the dynasty picture does a slow start to 2025 matter? He has a built in excuse if he doesn't knock it out of the park in year 1. Year 2 his value should still be there no matter what happens in year 1 unless something catastrophic happens.

“I am quite open to debate and criticism.” This quality makes you an excellent source for fantasy folks! Also the fact that you are willing to be convinced you might be wrong allows you to be flexible enough to be great!

I play in a standard league and if he gets round 2 draft capital he'll be in play from 1.05 onward I think.
I think Brooks is going to be a big riser after the NFL draft and throughout this summer. Those that draft early will benefit from the lack of injury updates. Currently his target is to be ready for training camp. Now he might not be 100% for the 2025 season but at 20 years old he has lots of football left in him - assuming he does fully recover and so far it sounds good.

First I applaud your efforts. Trying to do this before the draft is gutsy - some would say foolhardy. But I love your style. Like others, I disagree with several of your rankings but like you, I am going to be wrong on mine as well.

Anyway kudos for putting yours out!

Thanks, but I know enough to realize I am no better at projections than most others. I have been humbled enough times to have learned not to dig my heels in too firmly.

47 years + raising 3 girls. I am never right!

There is absolutely a correlation between weight, and fantasy success.

NFL teams don't give a lot of touches to guys that are light. JJ Zach touches on this in his work.

Really? 3,062 carries over 10 seasons. 203 lb back.

3,518 carries over 11 years. 210 lb back.

2,669 carries plus 510 receptions (265 touches per year). 188 lb back.

1,847 carries and 346 receptions (244 touches per year). 210 lb back.

272 carries and 67 receptions in 2023. 210 lb back.
228 carries and 32 receptions in 2023. 194 lb back
182 carries and 52 receptions in 2023. In a committee. 200 lb back.

It’s not about size. It’s about talent and production.

I love JJ but still think it’s best to do my own research. BTW, the backs I referred to were Barry Sanders, Curtis Martin, Warrick Dunn, Maurice Jones Drew historically. Then the 2023 backs were Christian McCaffrey, Kyren Williams and Jahmyr Gibbs. I wanted to show historical and current usage. A real analysis would be to look at all the starting RBs, including committee backs, and compare usage and statistics by size group. I won’t do it because I am semi-retired but I would read anyone who does. I would also love to host the author on my podcast to discuss it - even if it refutes my presuppositions.

I have seen some research that does show weight as one of the metrics that has some correlation to RB performance. The other metrics that mattered were 40 time and 3 cone drill. RB don't seem to do the 3 cone drill anymore. So while the study I am referring to found that to have some connection to performance the NFL does not need that data, otherwise the RB would still be doing that drill.

That said how much weight is enough? That's not really clear. Just that weighing more was better.

The NFL is changing and I think RB who weigh less are not discounted by NFL teams if they are good in other traits. NFL teams are not looking for that 3 down RB as much as they used to. These players can do well in a RBBC.

ROUND ONE
1.01 Marvin Harrison Jr. | WR | Rd. 1 | ARI – No surprise
1.02 Malik Nabers | WR | Rd. 1 | NYG – Clear path to WR1, but hard to get too excited about the Giants’ offense
1.03 Rome Odunze | WR | Rd. 1 | CHI – Long-term, I love this, but there are a lot of mouths to feed in Chicago
1.04 Brock Bowers | TE | Rd. 1 | LV – Who is throwing the ball to him?
1.05 Brian Thomas Jr. | WR | Rd. 1 | JAC – Nice path to WR1
1.06 Ladd McConkey | WR | Rd. 2 | LAC – McConkey could quickly emerge as the top receiving option for Justin Herbert
1.07 Xavier Worthy | WR | Rd. 1 | KC – Great fit for the Chiefs, but I wonder if he will get the volume some are predicting
1.08 Caleb Williams | QB | Rd. 1 | CHI – Chicago has struggled developing QB talent, but this seems a great fit
1.09 Keon Coleman | WR | Rd. 2 | BUF – I like the fit in Buffalo, and he could be a valuable red-zone threat
1.10 Jonathon Brooks | RB | Rd. 2 | CAR – Coming off of injury, it may take some time for Brooks to emerge as the Panthers’ top back, but he is the top talent in their RB stable
1.11 Trey Benson | RB | Rd. 3 | ARI – Projects as an eventual 3-down back, but he will begin in a reserve role behind Conner
1.12 Blake Corum | RB | Rd. 3 | LAR – There was no depth behind Kyren Williams, and Corum could push Williams early

ROUND TWO
2.01 Ricky Pearsall | WR | Rd. 1 | SF – Is this a sign that the Niners are going to move one of their veterans? As it stands now, there are a lot of mouths to feed in SF
2.02 Xavier Legette | WR | Rd. 1 | CAR – Nice path to WR1 with young QB
2.03 Adonai Mitchell | WR | Rd. 2 | IND – I don’t love the destination for AD, but I believe in his talent
2.04 Troy Franklin | WR | Rd. 4 | DEN – Perfect destination in Denver where he is reunited with Nix
2.05 Jayden Daniels | QB | Rd. 1 | WAS – Solid receiving options plus added dimension of rushing
2.06 J.J. McCarthy | QB | Rd. 1 | MIN – Perfect landing spot for this young, talented signal caller
2.07 Drake Maye | QB | NE – The Patriots should make it a priority to surround Maye with some talent; love the player, hate the supporting cast
2.08 Roman Wilson | WR | Rd. 3 | PIT – Ideal fit for the Steelers
2.09 Ja’Lynn Polk | WR | Rd. 2 | NE – There will be some growing pains in NE, but Polk could emerge as the team’s top WR
2.10 Jaylen Wright | RB | Rd. 4 | MIA – His speed fits what Miami likes to do
2.11 MarShawn Lloyd | RB | Rd. 3 | GB – Disappointing draft destination
2.12 Michael Penix Jr. | QB | Rd. 1 | ATL – Love the talent, love the weapons around him, but how long does he sit and learn from Cousins?

ROUND THREE
3.01 Bo Nix | QB | Rd. 1 | DEN – This was always the dream destination for Nix, IMO
3.02 Malachi Corley | WR | Rd. 3 | NYJ – Aging QB, deep WR corps
3.03 Jermaine Burton | WR | Rd. 3 | CIN – Deep receiver room, but hopefully this challenges (and humbles) Burton
3.04 Luke McCaffrey | WR | Rd. 3 | WAS – McCaffrey has been one of my mid-round targets
3.05 Javon Baker | WR | Rd. 4 | NE – Baker fills a void for the Pats
3.06 Ray Davis | RB | Rd. 4 | Buf – Fits as a short-yardage back alongside Cook
3.07 Isaac Guerendo | RB | Rd. 4 | SF – He is exactly the type of back the Niners excel at finding and developing
3.08 Jalen McMillan | WR | Rd. 3 | TB – Aging receiving corps, so opportunity for the future
3.09 Bucky Irving | RB | Rd. 4 | TB – May have to earn his keep initially returning kicks, but Irving gives the Bucs some depth at RB
3.10 Will Shipley | RB | Rd. 4 | Phi – Adds depth, but similar skills to to Gainwell
3.11 Ben Sinnott | TE | Rd. 2 | WAS – Lunch pail guy who should quickly earn a role
3.12 Ja’Tavion Sanders | TE | Rd. 4 | CAR – I like what Carolina is working toward, but expect some growing pains still

ROUND FOUR
4.01 Dylan Laube | RB | Rd. 6 | LVR – I love this fit for Laube
4.02 Kimani Vidal | RB | Rd. 6 | LAC – Could not have asked for a better spot
4.03 Audric Estime | RB | Rd. 5 | DEN – Estime fell after a poor Combine, and he struggles running laterally, but het him North-South, and he is a load
4.04 Malik Washington | WR | Rd. 6 | MIA – Another of my late-round favorites
4.05 Tyrone Tracy, Jr. | RB | Rd. 5 | NYG – A project who is still developing as a runner, but strong receiving skills and measurables
4.06 Devontez Walker | WR | Rd. 4 | BAL – uggh, crowded WR room on a run-first team
4.07 Brenden Rice | WR | Rd. 7 | LAC – Disappointing drop in the draft, but I like the potential fit
4.08 Rasheen Ali | RB | Rd. 5 | BAL – Depth piece who could find a reserve role
4.09 Braelon Allen | RB | Rd. 4 | NYJ – Nothing more than a depth piece
4.10 Johnny Wilson | WR | Rd. 6 | PHI – Perhaps transitions to TE?
4.11 Jacob Cowing | WR | Rd. 4 | SF – May be relegated to a role on ST
4.12 Bub Means | WR | Rd. 5 | NO – Intriguing late-round selection

Some additional QB Projects:
Spencer Rattler | QB | Rd. 5 | NO
Jordan Travis | QB | Rd. 5 | NYJ

Some Additional TE Projects:
Theo Johnson | TE | Rd. 4 | NYG – He has been one of my favorite Tight Ends in the pre-draft process, and I love the fit here
Tanner McLachlan | TE | Rd. 6 | CIN – Potentially a Round 6 steal
Jared Wiley | TE | Rd. 4 | KC – Intriguing developmental TE
Erick All | TE | Rd. 4 | CIN – Plenty of potential if he can shake the injury bug
Jaheim Bell | TE | Rd. 7 | NE – Athletic TE who could emerge

This class was labeled strong and after this draft I feel less than excited. I am normally a talent over situation kind of guy but I just am not seeing this class meeting expectations at this point (way too early to tell obviously). It would not surprise me though if the biggest takeaway in 2-3 years was the question of how did we miss on so many of these running backs? Time will tell…

Actually I think most have labeled the RB class as weak. I personally think it is stronger than most think. And deeper. Time will tell.

Great stuff @socrates

I am not going to pay attention to rookie ADP this year. Drafts will be all over the place.
Thanks, @massraider

I agree with you. Rankings are all over the place.

I look at ADP rankings to see if my own rankings are way out of line, but ultimately, if I like a player, even if I overvalue the player compared to ADP, I am willing to pursue the player aggressively. When I have deviated from that strategy, I have often been disappointed when someone else grabs the player ahead of me. I am content with being wrong with my rankings, but one of the most frustrating things in fantasy football is to watch one of my favorite players flourish on one of my leaguemate's rosters because I allowed ADP rankings to talk me out of my own rankings. Get your players.

What if it isn't talent but the feeling is that after the first 5-6 (non-QBs) its very flat. There is talent but ~6-20 could be anyone. Someone at pick 2.05 could easily outproduce 1.08.

I see this draft as lots of talent and the more darts in the 2nd round the better. Not everyone will work out but I feel there is tons of talent and I wish I had 3-4 early/mid seconds. I'd toss darts all day long as I really like a lot of them. Even the RBs could surprise sooner than later.

I think you bring up a good point about the depth and I am particularly interested in the running backs as some were brought into some good situations. It will be tough to determine which one’s will excel but there are some great opportunities for dart throws and will continue to be as the season goes on and people lose patience with certain guys. It will be a class to closely monitor and keep a close eye on guys you were high on and possibly have an opportunity to trade for or even pick up some in FA pools if playing time is not immediate.

One also has to remember is it sometimes takes a year or two for players to produce. Everyone is so impatient these days throwing players away and saying "see he is a bust".

Again, I don't know who it always will be but recent examples are guys like Zamir White, Kyren Williams, Jerome Ford, maybe even Chase Brown. TEs like McBride, Otton, Fergusson, maybe even Bellinger this year.

If you believe in the talent take a guy, even if it means waiting a year. Example: As a Fins fan and Achane owner I really like the Wright signing. I think long term both can be good for the team and fantasy.

Brooks is a value due to his injury. Benson landed in a good spot behind an aging Connor (29yrs old in a week). MarShawn Lloyd could be a value because people don't like his landing spot but maybe can work out if you don't need him right away. So many potentially good WRs landing in great spots and can get them in the 2nd round of SF leagues. I wish I had more picks in the 2nd round.
