The Church is in my top five bands of all time.IMO Echo and The Bunnymen and The Church are perhaps the most underrated bands of their time/genre.
mutually inclusive, imo.I hung out with Ian into the wee hours after a show at a small venue in Madison WI about 15 years ago. He was interested in my girlfriend and my buddy's girlfriend. We didn't mind because he kept buying rounds. Liverpool supporter, seemed a bit of a jerk but hard to say as we were all very drunk.

That was a great venue. I think the show I saw was an Ian McCulloch solo show, at O'Cayz Corral on E. You kinda have to be a jerk to be successful in that moody genre. Not exactly a lot of peppy, no-care-in-the-world types.El Floppo said:mutually inclusive, imo.CletiusMaximus said:I hung out with Ian into the wee hours after a show at a small venue in Madison WI about 15 years ago. in the Liverpool supporter genre? totally agree. You kinda have to be a jerk to be successful in that moody genre. I like Echo but I'm not on board with this sentimentI always remember thinking that their lyrics were simply better than other similar bands from the same era. More poetic. Especially "The Killing Moon".
Took 2 1/2 years to see it, but can't say I saw this comingThe Church is in my top five bands of all time.
Saw this coming a mile away.Prior to the late '90s, they were probably my favorite band. Still top 5 or so.
They're playing the theater on the lakefront in Chicago when they come through town. While I doubt I'll go see two bands that I saw in their heyday, we're planning on being in Burnham Harbor, which is right where the theater is, on a friend's boat that night. Close enough to get a good listen.Echo and the Bunnymen, such as they are, are touring with Violent Femmes this summer. I think I'll pass, although several friends of my generation seem interested. The Femmes are actually making decent music again these days. I saw Echo about 15 or so years ago in Madison, WI - hung out with Ian for quite a while after the show. He was drunk and hitting on my girlfriend the whole time, which was fine because we were all drinking on his tab.
I saw the Femmes right after they reunited a few years ago and it was surprisingly very good. They've since lost DeLorenzo, no great surprise, and I suppose one can argue about how important he is to the band. Gano and Ritchie seem pretty dedicated to making good music. They're playing the theater on the lakefront in Chicago when they come through town. Femmes are hometown heroes up there.Overseas shows are with Primal Scream. Naturally they're not coming anywhere near Florida. Not a Femmes fan. I remember seeing Sugarcubes, PIL, New Order, and Femmes a long time ago at Summerfest in Milwaukee. Crowd could give a rat's ### about any of these great bands and went crazy for a mediocre Femmes band. Such a shame.
I know. They're just not that good IMO.Femmes are hometown heroes up there.
Debut is still remarkably solid for being almost 35 years old. I probably went 15 years without listening to it in its entirety and was somewhat dumbfounded at how much I enjoyed giving it a listen again after all of that time.I know. They're just not that good IMO.
Yeah, it had been a long time and I heard American Music the other day (not off of their debut), but it made me think of how much I liked them in my late teens.Debut is still remarkably solid for being almost 35 years old. They'll always have a soft spot in my heart.
Glad to be so predictable.Saw this coming a mile away.
I had meant to say something smart-assy but remembered that I do the same thing waaay too much.Somewhat troubling to realize I told the same story twice in a one page thread.
Is your buddy named Cletius?I hung out with Ian into the wee hours after a show at a small venue in Madison WI about 15 years ago. He was interested in my girlfriend and my buddy's girlfriend. Not sure. I mean we were all very drunk. And it was 15 years ago. In Madison WI.Is your buddy named Cletius?
Just wait a couple years, then it will seem fresh.I had meant to say something smart-assy but remembered that I do the same thing waaay too much.
I"ve already forgotten what we were talking about... but ok.Just wait a couple years, then it will seem fresh.
