Need to re-watch this. Zombies are so unrealistic to me. Maybe I'll add some of the undead movies to my list.

It's good.

Scream also got slashers out of a rut a bit. It did a couple smart things - went back to an OG Friday the 13th type mystery of who the killer is, and it corrected my beef about the slashers - we start to care about the people being killed a bit (or at least I did). They were just random horrible teens we want to see killed. Shelly, I am looking at you buddy.
I will give you that. I was beside myself wondering how Chandler was going to cope if Monica got murdered
I've been thinking about your beef with big stars being in horror. For me what it is more about is when it's image conscious actors or people who have a brand or show to think of. It's not always the case, but more often than not it is a signal to me that less risks are going to be taken. The movie is probably going to play it safe, and that is not the best combo for horror. Also, those people aren't usually the best actors in the first place - strike two.

Back to Scream, for me the ++s far over shadowed the --s. It was Barrymore's idea to be the one killed at the start. Cox was Ok playing the shrew. Then the kock offs come with stuff like Urban Legend, I know what you did, Cursed - stuff like that, where the lesson learned seemed to be the answer was to shove in the hot teen stars, who cares about the rest. Most were

Urban Legend was a fun one.
I had fun with most of them, but they aren't showing up high on my lists and I get Scores' point about the stars more with those that followed Scream. It's my favorite show, but I tired of seeing Buffy in many of those types of movies, and the Dawson kids, and the 90210 kids, etc..

Yeah you may be on to something. It's not an absolute rule for me either. The Alien franchise, for example, I wouldn't trade Sigourney Weaver for anyone to play Ripley, and she's as A-list as it gets.

Urban Legend was a fun one.
I think The Faculty was one of the better ones in this bucket. There were some that I had forgotten about until I just looked like Teaching Mrs. Tingle and Disturbing Behavior.
Really enjoy The Faculty. That was a strong ensemble cast of the relevant teen, early 20’s talent of that time.

I never liked Teaching Miss Tingle.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. That wasn't a recommendation on those last two, more just a couple I had forgotten about meaning there were more than I thought. How about Idle Hands?

The better the acting, the more we get into the movie and forget the other stuff we know the actor for. The problem is most of them in these movies just acted the same.

Can’t believe this isn’t top 10. I might have it at no 1. This was probably the scariest movie I remember as a kid. There’s one other I’ll hold off on.

I was like 5 or 6 when I saw this. My brother is 10 years older and we had HBO. He’d have friends over in the basement and I’d sit at the top of the stairs and watch it. That scene where he cuts himself open and the Johnny depp death.

By far my favorite horror series, but they got pretty corny after part 3.

16? Expected this to be higher.

I can still remember the night I saw this down the street at a neighbor's house. I was probably 11 or 12. When it came for me to walk home that night, oh boy. It was probably only 8 houses down, but it felt like a mile. Even to this day I remember how scared I was and distinctly recall looking behind me. I probably ran the last part.

Again, I'll bring up age when it comes to ranking. I can imagine seeing this as a kid, probably would have scared the hell out of me, but it came out when I was 20. I still have it ranked at 15. It wasn't scary at all but was a whole lotta fun and original.

Based on the standards of the day. The 1980s had the highest cheese factor and Nightmare reflects that

Nightmare is a great idea, but it just doesn't hold up for me like most of the 80s horror. If I were making a list of greatest/most influential horror movies it would have a high ranking, but since this was supposed to be our personal favorites, in 2024 it was in that bucket of 41-75 that I was staring at 70 movies for.

Nightmare also was my first R rated horror and one of my main entries to the genre. My sister let me watch it when I was 12 or so at her boyfriend's house because they just wanted to go into the other room. Ask me in High School, and it's easily my favorite series. To me it shows it's warts more than some of the others because of the f/x. That, and they become pretty stupid with the gags and kills.

Nightmare on Elm Street scared the crap outta me at age 14. We saw it at a midnight movie (remember those?).

Going back to the car in the parking lot I kept looking back over my shoulder.

Absolute classic.

“I’m your boyfriend now Nancy”

And Part 3 is a cheesy awesome time!!!

If you ever want to revisit an entire series of a horror franchise in one hour, Jake Jarvi has you covered. He watches a franchise each year and records it all via time lapse with a brief breakdown after each film.

Here's the Saw marathon, for example:

Never cared much for the then Freddy movies but it could have been spoiled by seeing them randomly out of order. I don’t even recall which is the first. I just remember not thinking any of them were that good.

Idle Hands is on my list in the 70-75. The Faculty almost made it too.
