Garrett Hartley Appreciation Thread - Week 15 (1 Viewer)

He has nothing but dome games left except the game at Carolina and that will probably be a fair weather game. looks like he could be money down the stretch.

I picked the guy up on Sunday morning, solely because of a thread I read in the Shark Pool. I was debating between Shayne Graham and Hartley, and I actually picked up Graham first (9:56 a.m.), then I saw the Hartley thread and it convinced me to grab him 3 minutes later. Whew!

Does anyone know of any OFFICIAL statements saying that Hartley is starter for rest of year, or was this just a "wake up call" one week benching of Carney?

I don' t think there's anything in print, but I think it's obvious for several reasons that Hartley will be the starter:1) NO benched Carney when they were 11-0. Why would you make a kicker change? Things must have been pretty bad and NO must have felt like an untimely miss could cost them a future game2) He missed a 37 yd FG last Monday night and narrowly made an easy FG the same night...he really struggled3) Carney has very limited range4) NO has kept Hartley all year for his abilities and he's past his suspension now5) Hartley was 4 for 4 on FG's yesterdayIt would be a complete shock if they went back to Carney. Hartley appears better and has the bigger leg

5) Hartley was 4 for 4 on FG's yesterday
That is incorrect - he missed a 58 yard try. I doubt anyone will hold an insanely long one like that against him - it looked like he had the aim but it came up short. But if they had lost the game, you never know...

No way Hartley gets the slightest bit of blame for missing a 58-yarder, which was 5 yards longer than anything he's ever made in his career.

My bad. Forgot about that one. But since he had to kick the game winner twice, I figure it makes up for it

I love how just about every time they tried to ice him, Payton said "F it, let's put Brees back out there and get 10 more yards and try it closer."

Can't seem to get any official word on this. I have 2 moves left to make and would like to pick up Hartley as insurance for my playoffs, so don't want to waste the pick-up if he's not in there for sure!

I have not found official word but I can tell you Carney has looked bad. Even the point after attempts looked off target against the Patriots. Sean Payton couldn't bear to watch some of those kicks. But I agree wait for official word and play it safe.

!!!

I have been active kicker-less in my 20-team league for awhile now... been starting Hartley every week

I was pleasently surprised that he put up some points

 That is brutal, but I suppose in a 20 team league, what do you do when teams stash a backup kicker?

Really? What about taking flyers on kickers who try out for various teams (i.e. Cundiff), or grab a kickoff specialist like Carolina's Rhys Lloyd on the off chance that they put him in to boot a long field goal?

Our last waiver of the season is Wed. The guy I face in the playoffs has Carney. I'm one waiver spot ahead of him. Just to be a ##### I put in a request for Hartley at the expense of saying goodbye to Longwell. I'm not gonna let him get Hartley! I like to gamble.

I'm sure this was a permanent move. It will be Hartley from here on out.

eta: I dropped Carney completely and picked up Hartley as my only kicker.

This is basically exactly what i've been doing ever since the Baltimore kicker got fired. I have Nugent (who AZ was looking at because of Rackers' injured groin) and Hartley (on the off-chance that he came back). I got lucky. Also re: Cundiff, i am not the only team sans starting kicker...

I would think so too, but why wouldn't they just come out and say that if it were the case?

New Orleans Saints will stick with Garrett Hartley at kicker, for nowBy Mike Triplett, The Times-PicayuneDecember 09, 2009, 7:59PMSaints Coach Sean Payton said he plans to stick with Garrett Hartley at kicker - for this week, at least - after the second-year pro performed well in his 2009 debut at Washington last week. But veteran John Carney remains on the roster, so the Saints apparently have not made a permanent decision.

With the field conditions and not having played all season, how impressive was Garrett Hartley’s performance on Sunday?

“He was very impressive. He’s been practicing so well, and for us, after a period of time you see him hitting the ball and the pop in his leg. He’s a guy that confidence coming off of last year coming in midseason and going 13-for-13. Nonetheless though, with your first time out on the road with a little bit of a slippery surface, all those things were encouraging and he did a good job.”

Is he still your guy at Atlanta this week?

“That’s the plan.”

And for the foreseeable future as long as he’s going well?

“He has done a good job and we’re in a position right now where we’ve been able to keep both of those guys – both he and John Carney – and it has been a good fit. I think the two of them have really done a good job of handling this and working with each other. That has been a positive.”

He ***officially*** the guy this week?

Still haven't seen anything.

It would have been nice if, when they reported Carney inactive, that Hartley was in a funk and missing a lot of kicks in the pregame. Banging an XP off the upright won't help his case for next week.

Call for a fake FG when up only 3 outside of 2 minutes? Did he not trust Hartley to make the kick? Was the snap bobbled or something? Not liking Hartley's day today.

Looked like a designed fake.
My question is why fake it there? Did he think they had a better chance of converting than Hartley making the kick?
They've been wanting to run that play all year but Carney's not a very good blocker.

Because Payton is stupid when it comes to the kicking game. These guys never cease to amaze me the way they outthink themselves.

Tell me about it. I saw that and nearly lost my lunch. Between that call and the way Payton handles the Pierre Thomas/Mike Bell situation, it makes me wonder if the dude is an idiot savant.

Had to add that those 3 points (and the missed XP) may very well cost me my playoff game :goodposting:

I lost my parlay on the over for that game by 2 points. :goodposting: Didn't see it, how far would the field goal attempt be if it was a fake?

I believe it was going to be a 33-yd attempt.

I just dont understand that fake call - it was a chip shot - it puts you up by 6 vs 3 - dumb call IMO and didnt affect my game so not sour grapes

My guess is that you'll know in plenty of time for Saturday's contest. Pure speculation here but I think Hartley retains the job for at least Week 15. Five reasons 1) He didn't miss either of his 2 FG tries Sunday, he made them both 2) Carney has looked worse, missing an XP and several "gimme" FG's (and barely making other chip shots 3) Hartley looked shaky in warmups but they still went w/ him anyway when they could have changed right back to Carney 4) They didn't make the change to Hartley only to go right back to Carney after one kick. It was a long time coming, and I believe the Saints knew it would mess w/ the chemistry of the kicking game if they were to keep alternating bewteen Carney & Hartley, so they took their time with the intention of the move being permanent barring disaster 5) Hartley has a much stronger leg, and you never know when you'll need to knock down a game winning 50 yarder

yup. and that's the clincher, right there.i'm starting hartley with confidence w15-16. it's almost the playoffs -- the saints know full well that hartley gives them the best chance to win in the post-season and they need to get him up to gamespeed now.and i usually don't worry about missed XP here and there. we're talking NFL-caliber kickers, so it's hardly a question of skill -- but rather a matter of confidence, which will naturally increase as hartley continues to start. i suppose i am worried that his nerves might get the best of him big playoff moments or that payton won't turn to him in the clutch, but i think that's more than offset by his scoring opportunities on the high-powered saints offense (which won't be resting starters).plus, i'm sure he'll get an extra dose of attention/practice this week due to his missed XP. no one was more galled by that miss than hartley himself, so i guess we'll see what kind of competitor he is.

that has been the case since week 6, when hartley came back, yet payton stuck with carney for a long time.

Sportsline is reporting Harley is not practicing (or has not practiced) this week. Injured right hip?

from Q&A with Saints Head Coach Sean Payton:

What happened with Garrett Hartley’s injury?

“We think by the end of the week he’ll be fine. It was just something he had done in his warm-up prior to the Atlanta game, but nothing significant.”
