Early leakage is that Ward's injury is not serious and he should be ready to go via twitter stuff. Take it FWIW.

I didn't watch too much of the game. I did notice one target to Daniels in the end zone, but aside from that was he playing well? Did he drop any passes? I really appreciate the feedback.

He was not targeted much. I believe this was due to game circumstances more than anything. I would not be worried yet.

He had 2 targets, the pass he caught as well as a play in the end zone where he was open but Schaub was late getting the ball off and had to over throw him.I am wondering if James Casey may cut into Daniels targets some as the Texans are throwing the ball to him more than they did Leach. But with Kevin Walter out I think Jacoby and Daniels should both see more targets, so I agree with not worrying about OD yet.

Thanks for the reply boys. Wasn't Indy 4th best at defending TE's last year anyways? I'll be crossing my fingers.

Walter's injury nowhere close to as serious a previously thought..unless we are not getting good info from the Texans.

Head Coach Gary Kubiak

(on WR Kevin Walter’s injury) “Good news. I just got done talking to our doctors. It has been reported that Kevin (Walter) had a fracture. He does not. He does not have a fracture. It’s being treated as a bad bruise right now and we should know more here in a couple days. He’s obviously probably going to miss a few days and we’ll see where he’s at middle of the week and end of the week, but he does not have a fracture. That’s good news. (Derrick) Ward has a sprained ankle and he’ll be day-to-day.”

Probably need to change the subtitle since Walter is now supposedly week-to-week.

As for Owen Daniels, he was similarly underused in Week 1 last year against the Colts. Both games saw two targets for one reception, 9 yards in 2010, 12 yards in 2011. That could be a bad omen, as Daniels didn't find the endzone until Week 16 last year. Of course, in 2010, Daniels was recovering from injury when the season began, and then was injured again in the middle of the season, so it's really not worth comparison.

The question for me is that I just don't know how many chances Daniels will get at touchdowns. I can see 4-5 receptions and 40-50 yards per game, but with the Texans continued success at running the ball in the red zone, I just don't see much more than 4-6 TDs.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/11/kevin-walter-expected-to-miss-10-12-weeks-with-shoulder-injury/The news wasn’t all good for the Texans today.Per a league source, receiver Kevin Walter suffered a broken shoulder during Sunday’s win over the Colts, and he is expected to miss 10-12 weeks.Walter has been the primary complement to Andre Johnson in Houston for the past four years, starting all but three games. The injury bumps up Jacoby Jones and newcomer Bryant Johnson.
Great to see that Florio isn't being any more responsible with his journalism now that he works for NBC.

Based on what I saw in preseason, Daniels looks much more like the Daniels pre-injury than he did last year. I think he is going to have a big season, there was no reason to use him a lot against the Colts because the running game was working and Andre Johnson was getting open. As better teams try to contain Andre and/or stop the run, Daniels is going to get a lot more targets, and I think he will be very successful.

(on RB Ben Tate) “Well, he’s playing really well. As we work Arian (Foster) back into what we’re doing and get him back to full speed, Ben’s going to probably carry most of the load right now as we work forward with Arian. He responded very well. He’s getting better every time out and yesterday the thing that was most encouraging, he played his best football with about 10 minutes left in the game. It was nice to see that, but he’s coming along.”

I hope so. Good news is that we'll know for sure if Texans have taken the next level if they can beat PIT and BALT or the same old same old team that will beat the non playoff teams but come up short vs. the teams who are playoff contenders

I posted it in the game thread, but was anyone else a little irritated that we didn't use our timeouts to preserve the clock at the end of the 1st half? We easily could've had just under 2 minutes to try to get some more points.

I know this seems minor, but it is consistent with the continual conservative approach that lets other teams back into games. Plus, we just don't have good clock management. That has always been a problem with Kubiak. Poor use or non-use of timeouts. Poor challenges or lackthereof. Inability to snap the ball quickly to avoid challenges by the other team. Seems like really basic stuff... not sure why he can't grasp it.

Steelers long-time beat writer Ed Bouchette (Post-Gazette) was asked his thoughts about the game on local Pittsburgh radio. He said that he expects the Texans to "wipeout" the Steelers. I concur. The Steelers are not a very good team right now. Their offensive line, not strong in the first place, is in complete disarray. They are not nearly as strong against the run as in most of the past decade. They have ten turnovers committed to one created.

I expect a score along the lines of 34-17, maybe worse. It's unbelievable to me that the Texans are only favored by 3. I realize that Pittsburgh has much more clout with the betting public, but even so, I would think the line should be at least 6-7.

The Steelers will likely be better as the season progresses, but even that is unclear. Very few Steeler fans looking forward to this particular Sunday.

While there is a good argument that Texans are legitimately better than Steeelers right now, the Texans really still have prove that they can put togeher an entire season of winnin games they are supposed to win, especially against physical teams with a history of winning. I expect it to be closer than what looks like the average Steeler fan thinks.

Good piece on JJ Watt and love this clip

J.J. Watt helping energize Texans' front

Through three games, no AFC South rookie has been better than Houston first-rounder J.J. Watt.

He’s shown himself to be a perfect fit in Wade Phillips’ 3-4. He brings a tremendous work ethic. And he’s been consistently disruptive and productive.

J.J. Watt has already collected a sack, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal in his young career.

“In the run game I’ve had a few tackles in the first couple games and I had my first sack last week,” Watt said. “I’m just trying to come in and execute in the situation coach puts me into. I’m not trying to do anything outside my job …

“The situations they put me in and the things they ask me to do I think it fits my type of play well and I think it fits our defense. Every week I feel more and more comfortable in my position, in my duties. I’m just excited to keep excelling as the weeks go on.”

He’s third on the team with 13 tackles and has a sack, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal. I’m hearing good things from the personnel types I know.

Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. also give Watt a good review.

“Watt has been great,” he said. “He’s an ideal fit for 3-4 at defensive end, and more specifically, Houston’s up-field penetrating version. He’s long and hard to throw around and he plays with much better leverage than most players of his dimensions."

This week Watt’s watching film of the Steelers' offensive line that struggled badly against the Colts' defensive line last week.

He’s not Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis, but he can learn a lot from how the Colts' line attacked guys like Jonathan Scott and Chris Kemoeatu.

“I understand Pittsburgh's had a couple injuries on that line, they’re filling a couple different guys in there, we’ll have to see what they come out with,” he said. “Obviously when you see a situation like that, when defensive linemen have success last week, you want to try to take advantage of that. That’s what good teams do.”

As new blood, Watt has no connection to the Texans’ collapses of the past. To him, the failure late in the loss in New Orleans is not part of the team’s DNA. It amounted to an isolated incident that the team will learn from but has put behind it.

He said Houston will bounce back from it well and is eager to show it is better than that.

Phillips’ front seven needs to be the tone-setter for the defense, and so far Watt has certainly been a key ingredient in that.

As a Wisconsin guy, Watt always appreciated Reggie White. But another role model for him was Howie Long. Watt said he looks forward to meeting Long, a Fox analyst, somewhere down the road.

I expect Long will like Watt’s style.

anyone know what the deal was with Dorin Dickerson. Thought he was worth keeping and developing wondering why he wasn't kept over lester jean?

Lester jean is on IR so he really did not make it either, but I heard a rumor on a Texans' message board that Dickerson did not feel comfortable at WR. I know he did next to nothing during pre-season games, and if memeory is working played very little in games 2 and 4 which are ususally showcases for dudes like him.

Too bad. seemed like the perfect prototype to learn by AJ.

They have ten turnovers committed to one created.I expect a score along the lines of 34-17, maybe worse. It's unbelievable to me that the Texans are only favored by 3. I realize that Pittsburgh has much more clout with the betting public, but even so, I would think the line should be at least 6-7.The Steelers will likely be better as the season progresses, but even that is unclear. Very few Steeler fans looking forward to this particular Sunday.
I'm a Steelers fan, and the thoughts of JJ Watt against our guards, and the thoughts of Mario Williams against Trai Essex really make me fear for Big Ben's life.Steelers won a SB and made it to another with woefully pathetic offensive lines that cost them the last SB and nearly cost them in 2008. Our front office stubbornly and arrogantly refuses to truly address the issue, and they have their heads buried in the sand. As long as Bruce Arians is the offensive coordinator and we rely on our inept offensive line coaching to "coach up" players, Ben (and the offense's) true potential will not be realized.Similarly, **** LeBeau stubbornly refuses to remove the old bastards from the defense, despite their obvious subpar play. Aaron Smith WAS one of the best 3-4 DEs in the NFL. That was in 2008. 3 seasons later, and he is getting manhandled in 1 on 1 matchups when he was hell on wheels vs. 2 on 1 matchups prior to his consecutive injury seasons. Teams are running right at, and right over him. Despite dropping 2 of our last 3 first round draft picks on 3-4 DEs, Smith still plays almost 80% of all snaps, and he is getting his ### handed to him.We still have Willie Gay, who is a laughingstock with a big fat target on his back (hint - start Owen Daniels this week) and who knows whether it'll be the inept Bryant McFadden or the equally inept Keenan Lewis (hint - start Kevin Walter this week) trying to cover WR2 opposite Ike Taylor. Ok, so I'm done venting. Good luck this week. Big fan of the Texans' gameplan and your style. Philips' "stunt 3-4" is a thing of beauty with the right people working it, and i think you hvae the right people working it (although I thought that maybe Cushing would spend some time as a 3-4 OLB)

Sorry about Andre the Giant. Is Walter or J.J. likely to benefit more from his absence? Not sure either one is worth a pickup.

I wish I could tell you one or the other, but I expect that the TEs will be more involved and dependng on the week that Walter or Jacoby will be good. Neither has separaed from the other as 2A versus 2B and Andre being out won't change that (or I will be shocked if one does).

I think most touches per game in Johnson's absence will go as follows:FosterDanielsWaltersJonesCaseyI am also stashing Derrick Ward on all my benches.Rackers & Texans D are solid plays each week as well.Kubiak will put up a lot of points with this high powered offense even with AJ out. Opposing teams will have to throw late in games to try and score which will give Houston's D a lot of interception opportunities this year. Lots of fantasy points in Houston this year!! See you in the Playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantasy aside for a moment, I would not have been optimistic about this game were A.J. healthy. Frankly, I'm still not optimistic but his absence certainly helps. We need to run the ball effectively and get a few stops, but I see no way of slowing down Foster.

We beat you guys last year w/o him so AJ in or not shouldn't be an issue in Texans beating up your Raiders again. ;)

I would personally like to request that Houston trade Casey to the Saints. At least Payton would know how to use him and would.

That guy is potentially a monster, he could revolutionize the fullback position and make it relevant again.

With Johnson out if Houston does not utilize him then (in my admittedly amateur opinion) they have some serious coaching issues.

BAL, TEN X2, and Atlanta, those are the main obstacles that remain. That and avoiding the occasional road disaster vs say a Tampa or Cincy.

I mention this because, it's not just about Casey, it's about being a team that is about more than just Johnson and Foster, Do they want to be a 8-8/9-7 team which merely has the benefit of a sweet schedule and a damaged Indy or do they want to be a true 12-4 team and play in the AFC Championship? If so they need to become a much more complete team.

I would agree Houston really needs to either learn to utilize another weapon than AJ or Foster or have someone finally step up. I'm not sure if it's Schaub doesn't trust anyone other than Andre or if the playcalling just goes even more uber-conservative than normal, but they have to learn to function without AJ in the lineup. Good teams learn to overcome injuries, even to key players sometimes.

I really liked what we did with Casey against NO and hopefully they pull some more of that out. Foster looked rusty catching the ball, so we'll need him to shake it off as he'll get a lot of work going forward. Walter & Jones really need to contribute more if we are to have any shot while Andre is out.

OAK is a game we should win, but the fanbase will never learn to trust the Texans until they prove they can do it. Away against Baltimore & Tennesee was going to be very tough even with AJ. I guess we will see if Tennessee is for real and possibly determine the outcome of the division in 2 weeks.

I would expect Hou to focus pretty intently on adding a WR next year. I was hoping we would do it this year, but just too many issues with the defense to fix first. We can't press our luck anymore with Andre in his 30's now.

I think generally the fullback is going to get opportunities when the defense decides to ignore him (to defend better against more talented players), or one of your more talented players is unavailable. Houston used him very effectively against New Orleans. I think he will definitely get more touches with Andre down.Remember that this is his first year Kubiak has him in the fullback position so I think he is still figuring out how to use him (as a non-traditional fullback). I think he definitely has a plan or he would not have put him in that position otherwise (there are better blocking fullbacks that the Texans could have gotten if that was all they wanted out of the position).I think the need to spread the ball around is somewhat overblown when you have arguably the top receiver in the league and a top 5 running back on your team. With Johnson healthy, should the Texans be giving Casey the ball ten times a game at the expense of Andre and Arian? I don't think so.

I just remembered something from Sunday's game:

Was the Dressen tight-end screen on the first drive on 1st and 20 not a beautiful play?

I bash on Kubiak for a lot of things, so I thought I would give him credit for a great playcall.
