IS Draft Dominator Getting Better? (1 Viewer)

I have used it for the last several years (3+) in my 2 redraft leagues. After the draft, I am always ranked as the strongest team and yet I haven't won either league in recent memory. :lmao: In fact, last year, I wound up with a 2-11 record in my oldest league. :ptts:

Are they improving this thing? Or is it always going to give me false hope?

Drafted yesterday and tonight and (of course) according to DD, I had the strongest teams. I offered KO bets to everyone in the league, and was called by 1/2 the teams in both cases.

THIS IS IN NO WAY A SLAM ON CARLTON. HIS 163 draftsheets are ok.

Typical FF factors. Almost by default DD will tell you you have the best team, since you are drafting off of your stats and picking value based on your ranking. I have had a similar situation where DD has me ranked as the best team in my draft for about 3-4 years now. I usually end up scoring towards the top in total points, unless I get nailed by an injury or 4. Last year I stayed reasonable healthy and still finished out of the playoffs, but I had the 2nd highest scoring team in the league. In our every week doubleheader format I managed to draw the top team almost every week, so even though I'd consistently put up 2nd or 3rd highest weekly points I'd lose a game. Throw in a couple of crap weeks and you're out of the running. Oh well, thats FF, just draft a good team, make good weekly moves, and deal with whatever the scheduling gods throw at you.

I personally like the evolution of the DD, and would never draft the "old fashioned" way again.

Draft dominator is a tool to use, not something I use to pick my team outright. I like it to get an idea of how the first couple of rounds might play out, but, come draft time, I still prefer a printout of a spreadsheet and a pencil. I find you don't get the same "feel" of the draft using draft dominator. I prefer to look at players in tiers, something that is not as easy to do on a laptop. Using draft dominator, you can get so wrapped up in what is perceived value picks that you can forget that you need to put together a strong starting lineup. Having Chris Perry as your 5th RB is great, but your not going to have a great team if you have Chad Pennington as your QB1.

I used it repeatedly until draft time. I just wound up going with the FBG.com mag and a pen, that's it.

Great program for managing a draft but the Team Strength function is a joke.
Why? I like it.
It does not provide any useful information for me. For example if I think Drew Brees is the #2 QB in fantasy football but the DD says the #2 QB is Tony Romo the Team Strength page will indicate that my team chose the third best QB and not the second best QB. These type of gut shot calls of player A over player B are not properly reflected in the Team Strength page. For the sake of transparency I no longer alter projections in VBD and DD files. Making projections is for suckers when you can simply pay Joe and Co. to do it for you.

If you customize the DD to your league, you should always come out with one of the strongest teams when you click on Starters Only. But the rest of your team needs to have some handcuffs and players with late season starter potential to provide depth. If you just go with the top players available throughout the draft, you will have the strongest team at the beginning of the season, but not necessarily the best team for the long haul.

It is certainly true that if you feed DD junk data, it will return you junk results.

there should be a term for this, but something more catchy than "junk data in, junk results out"

Us computer nerds say Garbage In, Garbage Out.

DD is a great tool. I ran one draft with DD on the laptop and following a VBD printout. Nearly identical choices between the two. And good teams. I dont automatically take the highest person on the list. But it does show who is falling down in the draft and where the value is later on.

You can't remember if you won or not in the last 3 years?Seriously...its to be used as a tool not a be all, end all.

I'm a big fan of the DD. I have used it since it was created (Thanks Bruce) and have YET to be out of the playoffs. I'm in the thick of it throughout the year. Now I have won the league a couple of times and lost a couple of times... The DD is not going to account for injuries or the Ryan Grant factor out of nowhere last year. It's still based on projections.

As for the Team Strengths... the only real value in that is if you have it set to STARTERS only based on your league scoring.

When I use the tool, I also have a VBD sheet colored in tiers so I can pick the guy I like the best, not necessarily what the DD shows me. In combination, since they are both based off of FBG predictions, chances are you will ALWAYS end up the strongest team.

My biggest issue with the DD is that it doesn't account for runs. We expect people to draft skark moves, but 9 times out of 10, you're the only person drafting based on that concept. A long time ago an article was written on ZVBD that accounted for runs (if you can predict what positions are going to go between picks). If you save some history for a couple of years and look, it's eerie how similar each year's runs are. I think if there was a way of incorporating the ability to predict runs in the DD, this could be the most powerful tool ever.

If you think Drew Brees is the #2 QB, then just adjust the projections slightly so that he shows up that way. When you do, then that will be reflected in the Team Strength function. I agree that wholesale, ground-up projections are not worth my time, personally, but I am always willing to tweak a few here and there. If I don't, then I can ignore the strength function. That's the beauty of DD...you can use it as much or as little as you like. Great tool! (Thanks, Bruce!)

DD is a great tool.

Instead of drafting the highest player,

I take a look at the predicted drop-off at a position,

mentally adjust for my league's draft behavior,

look at the group of players availble at that/those position,

and take the guy I want,

giving me the best chance to get the next guy I want.

This is not going to give me the best strength per the DD,

but it will give me the best strength with the players I like.

I have used it for two seasons now in two leagues. Results have been Playoffs both years and last year I placed 2nd and 1st in each league. Like it has been said. It is not best available throughout the draft. The website even tells you for the first 3-4 rounds it is Best available, after that it is time to fill out your team based on need and strategy.

Since you followed whatever parameters that were in DD, of course you were rated the best. This is like asking a mother whose child is the best.

I have used DD for many years...I don't know 6 maybe? Anyway, it is a tool period. Some rely on it more than others. I have used it too much and relied on it too much and haven't done as much homework. The biggest beef that I have with DD is that the projections seem to fall in love with a player occasionally and I have been bitten by that not having done my own homework. Good draft preparation plus DD is a deadly combination because DD takes into account variables that in the heat of the moment are easy to overlook.

Preparation is the key with or without DD.

Every draft I do everyone asks me what grade the software gave them. I tell them and they all ##### about it. Makes me a laugh every time.

The more I have used the DD the less I have needed it. In fact the most important thing I use the DD for is in preparation for upcoming drafts, and by that I mean using it for mock drafts during June and July. I use it when it first comes out to gage current trends.

It’s easy to predict where the quality starters are going to go, but the DD helps me figure out where I need to target the sleepers I am looking at.

By the time I get to the third week in August (when my drafts are taking place) I don’t even need the DD because it’s all in memory. My home league Commish actually likes me to bring my laptop with the DD because it has that nifty timer that enforces the 2 minute pick rule. It’s one less thing the commish has to worry with. And he likes it because I can plug up to a printer and print off all the picks for him. But as far as using it, if you use the DD for actual preparation, you probably won’t need it for a live draft.

I will say this I like to use it for email drafts (where you can have between 1hr and 24 hrs to make you pick). If you go a day or two between picks, the DD is an easy way to refresh your memory.

I see more and more people using the DD or some equivalent, but the reality is that if you want to maximize the DD you have to put in serious time and effort in designing your own projections for player’s stats. If you rely on the projections from the DD (which are a good baseline) then you're more apt to pick off of the DD best available list. I would rather blame myself for screwing up than a program.

I don't believe anybodys cheat sheet but my own so I input my league rules and use that cheat sheet as a starting point. Then I go into projections and change stats around until it matches my personal cheat sheet. That way, DD is giving the same priority that I would. Then I look strongly at the previous draft to predict who will be available so I can get max value pics. Stay flexible and follow the tiers so the team stays balanced.

One thing I don't use the DD for is to pick exclusively from its recommendation for a given round. I agree with the prior poster that I don't have nearly enough time/desire to do my own projections, so I just work with quickly/simply modified stats with the Proj Dominator. There are still guys that this method will put in front of me that I don't really want in the position that it is telling me, and that's where my gut comes in. I do love the amount of information that I have at my disposal without a pile of papers in front of me, and I can easily access the various reports without taking too much time.

One of the best features of the DD is that in the setup you can chose an ADP profile for each of your league mates. I have found that by doing this for my mock drafts I can get a very good feel for what will likely happen when I pick a certain player in a round. You may scoff at the fact that this would be useful, but over time I would guess that the DD correctly predicts opponent's individual picks over 75% of the time, probably closer to 90%. If I have a few players I would really like on my team, I can have a fair amount of confidence that I know where I will have to pull the trigger to land them. Sometimes this exercise lets me know that I will really have to overspend if I want them, so I am able to plan in advance for an alternate path.

I used to do that. No need anymore. It feels like wasted effort. By the time the draft rolls around I have the players ranked well enough in my head so that I can make my picks off the DD's lists. I use the notes function to point out players that I am targeting and those I am avoiding, so it is easy enough to find who I want from the options available. I really like the DD UI it makes managing the draft so much easier than pen and paper.

You guys just don't know how to use DD!

Just yesterday DD made me a sandwich, ironed my shirts and got me free porn on pay-per-view.

Tomorrow it's teaching me Swedish, so I can finally schtupp Helga.

My DD is my brain. And I am consistantly over 80% play off qualifier % over last ten plus years with over 20 teams.

I've got 2 of them both fanball and FBG and I HATE THEM BOTH! Never once actually used them for a draft!

I bet you over last ten years aint one DD user with a better playff qualifier % then me!

To beat the experts you got to out think them. Not draft the way they tell you too!

I would give a lot of my sucess to visual pick ups watching pre season games.

EXAMPLE. I went with Tiki mid 15th EVERY DRAFT when every DD and expert was telling you to pick Dyane in first or second. haha

Thats where I nail the experts each and every year! I get off there band wagon and reach my own conclusions and make my own cheat sheets that are never close to any DD OR EXPERTS!

AND I KEEP EM TO MYSELF.

There are others out there like me. My favorite weekly cheat sheet has Favre 5th and JT o'Sullivan 10th best qbs to play this week! Perfect example of my thinking. You wont find that any major website on any major weekly who to play cheat sheet!

AND DONT P.M. me asking for it like a lot of you did last time I posted this type of comments. It my advantage and my secreat!

Not to knock FBG. They put out a lot of good useful information but when it comes to weekly cheatsheets and EVEN stat predictions I always look the other way OTHER THEN TO KNOW WHERE EVERY PLAYER WILL BE PICKED BY OTHERS DURING DRAFTS! once again...... ADVANTAGE ME.

I'll tell you right now DD is the #1 reason I am a subscriber. This application is so many steps ahead, it's almost unfair. I play in one specific league that is so quirky that most managers struggle. My rankings are on point because of DD. It's all about exposing the real value of players in your system and if you are using it solely as an auto-draft function, then you are not using the program correctly.

I find it so reliveing to sit there and watch players come off the board in spots where I know the other managers don't know any better and use their magazines or printouts from Rotowire.

I started using VBD and dropoff calculations in fantasy basketball last year and absolutely SMOKED two leagues. The whole concept came from FBG and the DD.

You might want to see a doctor about those unwanted secretions.

been using it for years.... in multiple leagues.

Can not tell you the last time i did not make the playoffs .... I use it as a tool , not a final decision maker... I have my own opinions of players/situations.

But the DD's biggest flaw it does not provide a "Luck Factor" through out the season ....

DD is a tool to track lots of stats during the draft so you can make decisions on what to pick each round.

For example, in a standard, performance type scoring system league (6pts for qb Td passes), I was drafting 4th. It went AP, LT, Westbrook and then I picked Marion Barber III. That is how you use DD. So what if it said Tom Brady was the best value or Steve Jackson was the best next RB. MBIII was "ranked" 14th best overall. That doesn't mean you can't pick him if you like his chances most out of the next 5-10 players.

You know he won't be available due to DD in your next pick, so if you want him, you have to pick him then.

Jackson, Gore and Addai were higher ranked, but if you look at the VBD value, they were all within 5 pts, so the value is similar to a tier.

Pretty much you have to have a flexible plan going into a draft and adjust what positions you will be drafting based on what is happening with the other teams. Then when it's time to pick, just select the guy you like best out of the handful of top "ranked" guys in DD in that position.

In this way you get a team you probably like and will still be competitive barring injury or gross projection errors.

Cheatsheets and ADP and the like are merely tools for all of us to draw our own conclusions. If you project someone high with a much lower ADP, it doesn't make sense to pick him there.Next year, we should set up a league here with subscribers and non-subscribers and see who does better. My guess is it's the former... the wealth of information here to make your own conclusions is amazing.

I think if there was a way of incorporating the ability to predict runs in the DD, this could be the most powerful tool ever.
Does the VBD color these Tiers?

Every draft I do everyone asks me what grade the software gave them. I tell them and they all ##### about it. Makes me a laugh every time.
I usually post the DD team strengths on our message board after the draft. One guy in my league gets so mad because he has been ranked the lowest over the last few years. It really gets in his head and he tries to convince everyone that his team will be good.

Is this the same BuckeyeDawgs that finished dead last in this league last year?http://football33.myfantasyleague.com/2007/home/73006

Defense in the 5th Round?!?
Going Alexander/Harrison/Evans/Deuce in the first 4 too.Didn't use the DD? Point to me.

I definitely enjoy the benefits. obviously, it is just a tool and not gospel, but if you know how to use its strengths, it can make a world of difference.

unfortunately, I am still not comfortable with the way that DD calculates auction values. there are so many variables that need to be input and tweaked. if you know your league's drafting habits, sometimes it can be hard to get the values lined up right...and using a default list of auction values that isn't correct can be disastrous.

No. I use the VBD spreadsheet set to my scoring rules (Excel version). Then I set up tiers and color code myself based on a 10% rule. I look at anyone within a tier as equivalent. So when the DD makes a recommendation on best value, I cross reference on my tier sheet to determine who else is approximately the same. Then I look at the needs of the next drafters in my league before my pick comes back. Then I make my draft decision. Works pretty well. I really want to ratchet to the next level, hence I am exploring an easy way on identifying what picks will go when.I'm just not as computer literate as Bruce! =)

:loco: :wall:  I'd respond otherwise but, this is so ridiculous it's gotta be a fishing trip looking to get mention in FFA quotes thread.
