NFL Coaching & Front Office Changes for next season (1 Viewer)

I can't believe that Caldwell is supposedly the front runner for a HC job, any HC job after the collapse in IND

IIRC the Indy fans really loathed him when he left.

Munchak might not be such a bad fit - just make sure he doesn't bring Loggains or Jerry Gray with him...

Wonder if Whiz brings Grimm to TEN, and who he brings in as OC and DC

Rotoworld:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports ex-Bucs QBs coach John McNulty is a "name to watch" as Titans offensive coordinator.

The Titans just hired Ken Whisenhunt as head coach Monday. McNulty was part of Whisenhunt's staff in Arizona, serving as quarterbacks coach in 2012. He was previously Arizona's wide receivers coach for three seasons under Whisenhunt. McNulty then jetted to Tampa Bay to work for pal Greg Schiano in 2013. McNulty served as Rutgers OC in 2008. Whisenhunt will likely call his own plays in Tennessee, so the OC hire isn't as important.

Bengals DC Mike Zimmer is in Minnesota Tuesday for a second interview with the Vikings.

Zimmer remains the front-runner for the Vikings' head-coaching vacancy, as the only other candidate thought to be getting a second interview is Cardinals DC Todd Bowles. The 57-year-old Zimmer has a firm edge in experience and has led the Bengals' defense to top-seven finishes in each of the last three years. He also runs a 4-3, a system the Vikings already have the personnel in place for. Bowles ran a 3-4 in the desert this season.

Sources tell the Denver Post that the Browns are waiting on a chance to interview Broncos OC Adam Gase before hiring a head coach.

The Browns' interest in Gase is the worst kept secret in the league right now. The Cleveland Plain Dealer and the NFL Network have both previously reported that he's the top target, and that the Browns are just waiting for the Broncos' playoff run to end so they can stage an interview. Unlike new Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt, Gase is not interviewing while his team is alive. If Denver makes the Super Bowl, the Browns won't be able to talk to their man until Feb. 3 at the earliest.

Packers QBs coach Ben McAdoo is interviewing with the Dolphins for their offensive coordinator vacancy Tuesday.

Although he's never been a coorindator, McAdoo is a prime candidate to fill Mike Sherman's shoes as he worked with Joe Philbin in Green Bay. He's also studied under Mike McCarthy for a decade and counts Aaron Rodgers as a reference. McAdoo is also a candidate for the Giants' OC job.

Rotoworld:

The Dolphins will interview Brian Xanders for their general manager vacancy.

Xanders was the Broncos GM from 2009-12, playing a major role in putting together one of the league's best rosters. In the 2010 and 2011 drafts, he landed the likes of Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Von Miller. Xanders parted ways with the Broncos after last season, signing on in Detroit as the senior personnel director and crushing another draft -- this time stealing guys like Larry Warford late and signing Joseph Fauria as a UDFA. Xanders would be a coup for the Fins as they replace Jeff Ireland.

Rotoworld updates:

According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Eagles QBs coach Bill Lazor is expected to be named the Lions' new offensive coordinator.

Lazor has drawn plaudits for his work with Nick Foles, but has never coordinated an NFL offense. Before joining Chip Kelly's staff, he spent three seasons as the Virginia Cavaliers' offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. He was a Redskins assistant from 2004-07, and served as the Seahawks' QBs coach in 2008-09. In Detroit, Lazor's main task would be sharpening Matthew Stafford's shoddy mechanics. Stafford has thus far been unwilling to clean up his sloppy game.

The Browns are allowing in limbo DC Ray Horton to interview for "any available coaching positions," including lateral moves.

Horton has yet to be technically fired from his Browns gig, but will likely be cut loose whenever Cleveland finally gets around to naming Rob Chudzinski's replacement. Horton oversaw one of the league's better defenses in 2013, and has whipped up aggressive, swarming units during his three-year coordinating career. It's surprising he didn't draw more interest as a head-coaching candidate.

FOX Sports reports Cardinals DC Todd Bowles has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Browns' head-coaching vacancy.

Although NFL Network's Albert Breer reported Sunday that the Browns' job is viewed as "radioactive" around the league, Bowles' withdrawal is probably due to the fact that he didn't view himself as a realistic candidate to replace Rob Chudzinski. There have been rumors that Broncos OC Adam Gase's hiring is a fait accompli in Cleveland. Perhaps it's by design, but the Browns' vacancy has generated absolutely no buzz since Chudzinski was summarily dismissed after only one year on the job.

Chargers re-signed DC John Pagano.

The Bolts' defensive overseer since 2012, Pagano's two-year deal had expired. According to ESPN, former Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt had wanted Pagano to join his staff in Tennessee. Pagano's unit allowed the 11th fewest points in the NFL last season despite an ineffective secondary and wave of injuries up front.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Colts QBs coach Clyde Christensen is Lions coach Jim Caldwell's "top choice" to serve as Detroit's offensive coordinator.

Caldwell and Christensen worked together in Indianapolis from 2002-2011. When Caldwell was named the head coach of the Colts in 2009, he promoted Christensen to OC. Current Colts coach Chuck Pagano retained Christensen as QBs coach. Christensen was a major influence on Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. He'd be a terrific hire to work alongside Matthew Stafford.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Lions are expected to hire Ravens DBs coach Teryl Austin as their defensive coordinator.

New Lions coach Jim Caldwell and Austin have known each other for a long time. The two worked together at Penn State and Wake Forest in the 1990s before their time with the Ravens the past two seasons. Austin has coordinated one defense in his coaching career -- the 2010 Florida Gators. He's expected to keep the Lions' 4-3 defense in place, which is an easy decision.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens are debating whether to go outside the organization for their new offensive coordinator or promote from within.

Jim Caldwell was hired by the Lions to be their next head coach, so the Ravens are looking for their third offensive coordinator in a span of about 13 months. Receivers coach Jim Hostler has been pegged as the most logical in-house candidate. He was the 49ers' OC in 2007. San Francisco fielded the league's No. 32 offense that season. The Ravens are also said to have some interest in Norv Turner. Turner is technically still under contract with the Browns.

Lions hired Ravens OC Jim Caldwell as their head coach.

After missing out on top target Ken Whisenhunt, the Lions settle for the man who worked hand-in-hand with Peyton Manning/Tony Dungy in Indy from 2002-2011. His success there as the quarterbacks coach and then head coach was impressive (two Super Bowl appearances, one win), but his ability to turn around the Ravens offense and lead them to a Super Bowl win after Cam Cameron was fired late in the 2012 season should be the bold print on his resume. In Detroit, Caldwell inherits a franchise quarterback that needs polishing in Matthew Stafford, the game's best wideout in Calvin Johnson, a potentially dominant defensive line and an all-purpose back in Reggie Bush. It's a professional hire that figures to benefit Stafford. Only the Browns and Vikings remain as teams still in search of a head coach.

Rotoworld:

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Lions gauged Tony Dungy's interest in their head-coaching vacancy before hiring Jim Caldwell.
As he's done to every job offer since retiring after the 2008 season, Dungy said thanks, but no thanks. Instead, he went to bat for his former protege Caldwell, having serious sway with Lions GM Martin Mayhew. A Hall-of-Fame finalist, the 58-year-old Dungy appears to have zero interest in returning to coaching.

According to Profootballtalk, "at least one league insider" believes Patriots OC Josh McDaniels could still end up the Browns' head coach.
It's hard to believe McDaniels would go back on his word after so publicly committing to the Patriots for 2014, but stranger things have happened. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, McDaniels only withdrew his name from consideration to replace Rob Chudzinski after learning he wasn't the frontrunner for the job. The odds are high McDaniels remains with the Pats for 2014, but as the Chip Kelly saga proved last year, anything is possible.

The Baltimore Sun reports Norval Turner is a candidate for the Ravens' offensive-coordinator vacancy.
Turner made the most of his limited weapons in Cleveland, and would be an ideal fit for big-armed Joe Flacco. Although the Browns all but abandoned the ground game in 2013, Turner also has a long history of successfully running the ball, coaching the league's rushing champ five separate times. He'd be an improvement on Jim Caldwell.

Giants hired Packers QBs coach Ben McAdoo as offensive coordinator.
The news comes out of left field, as McAdoo had just interviewed with the Dolphins on Tuesday, and was reportedly a candidate to replace Jim Caldwell in Baltimore. McAdoo interviewed with the G-Men last week. McAdoo was considered the favorite to replace Mike Sherman in Miami, partly because of his experience working alongside Joe Philbin in Green Bay. For New York, McAdoo is a departure from Tom Coughlin's coaching tree. Former Bucs OC Mike Sullivan, who served as a Giants assistant from 2004-11, was considered the most likely candidate to replace Kevin Gilbride. McAdoo has zero NFL play-calling experience, but a new voice is needed for a broken offense.

Chargers promoted QBs coach Frank Reich to offensive coordinator.
The Bolts stayed in house to replace Ken Whisenhunt. A backup quarterback from 1985-1998, Reich has just six years of NFL-coaching experience, but helped revive Philip Rivers' career this season. Reich served as Peyton Manning's quarterbacks coach in Indianapolis from 2009-10. It's unknown if Reich or head coach Mike McCoy will call plays in 2014. Reich has zero play-calling experience.

Redskins promoted TEs coach Sean McVay to offensive coordinator.
Only 27 years old, McVay spent the past three seasons as the Redskins' tight ends coach. It's a risky hire considering McVay is younger than some of the players he'll be coaching, but new coach Jay Gruden has already said he'll call plays next season. That will allow McVay to ease into the job. Former Redskins TE Chris Cooley recently praised McVay to ESPN. "He had the highest understanding of an offense of any position coach I’ve ever been around," Cooley said. "Two years ago I said if anyone becomes a head coach on this staff it would be Sean McVay." McVay is an unknown, outside-the-box hire for a team that played things safe at head coach.

Any thoughts on possible FF implications of these possible new OC's?

Lazor - DET

McAdoo - NYG

Christensen - IND (if Hamilton moves on)

McVay - WAS

Norv Turner - BAL

Reich - SD

Tedford - TB

I think Tedford in TB is the most intriguing.

Turner in BAL could hold pluses for Flacco and Smith.

from the Rotoworld blurb above:

Turner also has a long history of successfully running the ball, coaching the league's rushing champ five separate times.
This could also bode well for Rice and Pierce, assuming they can also improve the offensive line and add at least one more legitimate WR to help take the pressure off (and Pitta making a full return and not holding out would help).

Profootballtalk reports Vikings assistant GM George Paton "has landed on the Dolphins' radar screen" for their general manager vacancy.

Paton just finished his seventh season with the Vikings. He was considered one of the finalists for the Rams' GM opening prior to the 2012 season before losing out to Les Snead. Paton previously worked in Miami's front office as the Director of Pro Personnel from 2001-2006. The Dolphins have been announcing their interviews, so if Paton gets a look, we'll find out soon enough.

Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer will interview for the Vanderbilt head-coaching vacancy Wednesday.

Schottenheimer seems to get head-coaching interviews every year, and we're not sure why. His offenses are unimaginative and vanilla on an annual basis. In 2013, he couldn't find a way to use Tavon Austin and didn't feature high-priced TE Jared Cook nearly enough. Schotty likes to run a ground-and-pound offense. He did that with former Vanderbilt star Zac Stacy this past season and relied on Shonn Greene in the past. Schottenheimer has been the Rams' OC the past two seasons. Colts OC Pep Hamilton is also in the mix at Vandy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Colts OC Pep Hamilton is a candidate for Vanderbilt's head-coaching job.

Hamilton didn't distinguish himself as the Colts' play-caller this season, but had better luck as Stanford's offensive coordinator from 2011-12. Hamilton has more NFL than college experience, but his success at an academically-minded football school is likely what's piqued Vandy's interest. For the Colts, losing their coordinator could be a blessing in disguise, as Hamilton had a rocky first year as Indy's coordinator. Aside from his unwavering commitment to the Colts' go-nowhere run game, Hamilton stuck with Darrius Heyward-Bey as his No. 2 receiver for far too long, waiting for ages to get young wideouts LaVon Brazill and Da'Rick Rogers more involved. If Hamilton stays for 2014, he has to do a better job of utilizing Indy's most-valuable asset, Andrew Luck's arm.

Vikings brass was mulling over whether to bring in more candidates for second looks but decided to offer the job to the much-deserved Zimmer. Giants...the OL is in shambles and we need to see what new talent they bring in. I would avoid every Giant as of now. Eli most sacks ever, worst season, lose one probably two stalwarts on their OL-Snee and Diehl. Giants thread a guy has them cutting all four Centers(yes four) because he doesn't like them. Another doesn't like Boothe but other articles suggest Boothe is their best lineman and he's a free agent. You'd have to go back to an expansion team to find something comparable. Ramble...if Coryell was the OC it wouldn't matter if their line is as bad as it is today. Let's see who they add. They also need to add a RB or two so that brandon jacobs doesn't seem like one of your top backs.

Who will the OC be?

Rotoworld:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Vikings have received permission to interview in limbo Browns OC Norval Turner for the same position in Minnesota.

Neither Norval nor DC Ray Horton have formally been relieved of their duties in Cleveland, but the wayward franchise has allowed them to interview for jobs as their quixotic coaching search rolls on. Turner had grown stale by the end of his time in San Diego, but produced more points than should have been expected in Cleveland considering his lack of a viable quarterback or running back. He'd be a strong addition to new coach Mike Zimmer's staff, and a welcome hire for Adrian Peterson. Norval has coached five rushing champs during his career.

Bengals promoted LBs coach Paul Guenther to defensive coordinator.

With former Bengals assistants installed in both cities, Guenther had drawn interest from Minnesota and Washington. However, NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Bengals "weren't (going to) let him go." That presumably means they weren't going to grant him permission to interview. Either way, Guenther has ended up in a good spot. The Bengals' LBs coach the past two seasons, Guenther has been on Marvin Lewis' staff since 2005. He's drawn raves for his work with the likes of Vontaze Burfict, and was ready for the next step on the coaching ladder. Although the Bengals are losing one of the league's top assistants in Mike Zimmer, there shouldn't be much of a drop off under Guenther in 2014.

Horton and Whisenhunt have worked together in the past. Horton was the DBs coach in Pittsburgh when Whisnehunt ran the offense. In 2011, Whisenhunt brought Horton over to the Cardinals to run his defense. Whisenhunt wants to run the 3-4 in Tennessee, which is what Horton prefers. Horton oversaw one of the league's most underrated units in Cleveland this past season. He's an aggressive play-caller. Akeem Ayers could be a nice fit at 3-4 OLB.

Chargers TEs coach Jason Michael will interview for the Titans' offensive-coordinator vacancy.

New coach Ken Whisenhunt is dipping into the Chargers' well for possible assistants. An NFL assistant since 2005, Michael has been with the Chargers since 2011. He served as the 49ers' QBs coach in 2010. Whisenhunt has already said he'll call his own plays, so whomever he hires as offensive coordinator will be more of a caddie than overseer in 2014. It's not a surprise, as coach Joe Philbin didn't even call plays during his days as the Packers' offensive coordinator. Lazor has never called plays at the NFL level, but has learned under master play-caller Chip Kelly, and can't possibly be any worse than ex-Dolphins OC Mike Sherman. Sherman dialed up plays seemingly at random, and was prone to abandoning the run. Lazor should work to establish the Dolphins' ground game.

Chudzinski's fit with the Ravens would be an awfully intriguing one. He likes his offenses to get vertical, which would seem to mesh perfectly with Joe Flacco's big arm and Torrey Smith's deep speed. As we know, Chudzinski also loves his tight ends. If the Ravens can re-sign Dennis Pitta -- he'll likely be franchise-tagged if not -- he becomes an even hotter name as a fantasy tight end. He also can't "bet on himself" and become a free agent after the 2014 campaign. Ryan has never been the problem. He needs to find a quarterback, some receivers, and a competent offensive coaching staff. Marty Mornhinweg will stick around as Gang Green's offensive boss for at least another season.

Lions hired Ravens DBs coach Teryl Austin as defensive coordinator.

Austin has never coordinated a defense at the NFL level, but has experience working alongside new Lions coach Jim Caldwell going back to Caldwell's days at Penn State and Wake Forest. The duo is committed to keeping the Lions' 4-3 defense in place, which is an easy decision considering the resources Detroit has invested in its defensive line. Austin has 12 years of experience as an NFL DBs coach, so his first order of business will be sorting out the Lions' muddled secondary. Ex-Bucs DC Bill Sheridan is being interviewed as an assistant.

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans are interested in Steelers LBs coach Keith Butler for their defensive-coordinator vacancy.

New Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt tried to pry Butler away from the Steelers several times while Whisenhunt was in Arizona, but Pittsburgh denied him each time. Butler may be the DC-in-waiting for the Steelers once **** LeBeau decides to call it a career. Whisenhunt is intent on bringing in a defensive boss that runs the 3-4. In-limbo Browns DC Ray Horton may be the favorite.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora mentions Jim Zorn and Raiders senior offensive assistant Al Saunders as potential candidates for the Ravens' offensive-coordinator vacancy.

Both men have previous working experience with Joe Flacco. Zorn was the Ravens' QBs coach in 2010 but was fired over philosophical differences with then-OC Cam Cameron. Flacco was legitimately angry about Zorn's firing. Saunders served as an offensive consultant in Baltimore from 2009-2010. ESPN Ravens blogger Jamison Hensley calls Zorn the "intriguing candidate."

Vikings hired Dolphins LBs coach George Edwards as defensive coordinator.

New coach Mike Zimmer is assembling his staff quickly. Edwards is on board to help Zimmer run the defense, while Norv Turner is expected to be named the offensive boss shortly. Edwards, 47 on Thursday, coached Miami's linebackers the past two seasons. He previously worked as the Bills' defensive coordinator from 2010-2011. Edwards also coordinated the Redskins' defense in 2003. He and Zimmer worked together on the Cowboys' defensive staff in 2001.

Butler might have been slightly better, but I really like what wiz has done in Nashville, bringing in Horton and Michael.

Obviously time will tell if it pays off.

Titans hired ex-Browns DC Ray Horton as defensive coordinator.
The deal will become official on Tuesday. Some contract issues still need to be worked out between Horton and the Browns, but the 53-year-old will be running the show on the defensive side of the ball in Tennessee next season. Horton and coach Ken Whisenhunt have worked together in Pittsburgh and Arizona in the past. The Titans will be making the switch to the 3-4 defense. On paper, Akeem Ayers seems likely to be one of the main beneficiaries. He has plus pass-rush skills and projects to play outside 'backer. Zach Brown could fill the Daryl Washington role at inside linebacker. However Horton decides to employ his players, we do know it's going to be an aggressive, attacking group.

The Dolphins interviewed Bucs director of player personnel Dennis Hickey for their general manager vacancy on Friday.
Hickey is the seventh candidate to interview for Miami's general manager job. He's spent the last 18 years in the Bucs' front office, most recently working side-by-side with former GM Mark Dominik. Hickey has experience in both college scouting and the Pro Personnel Department, playing a major role in the signing of Dashon Goldson and trading for Darrelle Revis this past offseason. In addition to Hickey, the Dolphins have also been linked to Browns assistant GM Ray Farmer, Titans VP of player personnel Lake Dawson, and Lions senior personnel director Brian Xanders in their search to replace Jeff Ireland.

The Baltimore Sun mentions ex-Browns coach Rob Chudzinski as a candidate for the Ravens offensive coordinator vacancy.
Other candidates mentioned for the Baltimore opening are ex-Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan, ex-Texans coach Gary Kubiak, in-house WRs coach Jim Hostler, Saints QBs coach Joe Lombardi, and Chiefs "spread game analyst" Brad Childress.

The Redskins announced Jim Haslett will remain their defensive coordinator.
As expected. However, we're not sure what Haslett has done to earn the job. His defenses in Washington have mostly been atrocious since he was hired in 2010 -- finishing 31st in total yards his first season, 13th in 2011, 28th in 2012, and 18th in 2013. The Redskins surrendered the second-most points (478) this past season. Haslett has one year left on his current contract.

Titans hired Chargers TEs coach Jason Michael as offensive coordinator.
Michael has been an assistant with the Chargers since 2011 and worked alongside new coach Ken Whisenhunt in San Diego this past season. Whisenhunt will be calling the plays in Tennessee, but Michael will hold the title of offensive coordinator and handle the day-to-day activities. One of the younger coordinators in the league, Michael figures to spend this season developing on the job before getting a chance to earn a bigger role in 2015.

The Redskins hired ex-NFL WR Ike Hilliard as their receivers coach.
After his playing career ended following the 2008 season, Hilliard, 37, has been making the rounds in the coaching business. New Redskins coach Jay Gruden was the offensive coordinator for the UFL's Florida Tuskers in 2009 when Hilliard got his first coaching job as the Tuskers' WRs coach. Hilliard then coached the Redskins receivers in 2012 and the Bills wideouts in 2013.

Quick ranking so far for me of the new hires at HC...

1. Tampa Bay-Got a proven winner and a guy who has a SB trip on his resume, also links to the former Tony Dungy, solid hire by the Buccos.

2. Tennessee-Same as TB for me, got a proven track record guy with a SB trip from a crummy franchise on his resume, he's gold.

Little further down...

3. Washington-Jay Gruden will get the nudge over Mike Zimmer in MN for me. I don't think he will have greater success than Zimmer because it is Snyder's team and somehow he will get in the way but I think Gruden has shown the last couple seasons that he is able to do a lot with not much at QB if you believe Dalton is garbage(not sure I do). I would like to see Gruden do well but then again I don't like the Skins much so I won't be rooting hard for him. This FO IMO is almost as bad as Miami, not quite but it isn't that far off.

4. Minnesota-Mike Zimmer will have his hands full as head coach. He might understand defenses just fine but I don't see where he helps out on offense. They are reportedly gonna hire Norv Turner…great so in a year or two if things are not exploding on offense then we can expect another OC in there for Stafford and company. Vikings fans claim this was a tough sell, I don't think head coaches care about stadiums that much and playing outside is nothing new for the majority of the potential hires. Vikings did OK in the hire, just don't see Zimmer as a cutting edge coach, more of a steady eddie.

5. Houston-Bill O'Brien will be a lot higher on many lists but I don't see it. Yes he took over a not so good shape PSU program but let's not act like they were taking walk ons and anyone who could put on a uniform. This was not Unnecessary Roughness. We have seen a few from college do well in the NFL but we also have the Spurriers, Sabans, Petrinos of the world to counter some f that unbridled enthusiasm. Was a OC for New England, the assistants at NE have not faired too well in the HC roles of the NFL.

6. Cleveland-I give them the spot since they will be hiring someone left in the final 4 teams in the SB run plus they have the last opening left so they can pick what they want from whoever is left in the pool…if they will get out of the water to join Cleveland that is.

7. Detroit-Jim Caldwell is an absolute sham of a HC and he ran the Colts so far into the ground they ended up 1-15 and he changed the course of the NFL by Indy getting their 2nd big franchise QB to possibly give them a run of about 20-25 years with incredible QB play, it's just not fair. I hate him for that to begin with but the guy is a buffoon and I cannot imagine he will have the respect of the locker room for long. He might win because they have some talent but I can also see him doing no better record wise than about 8-8…that might get him 2 seasons and then the fans are gonna go nuts…in fact if he doesn't make the playoffs next year I would rate him as a failure again with what he has to work with coming in.

Odd that Caldwell gets no credit for taking the colts to the superbowl ( i get it he was a caretaker) but why should be shoulder the complete blame for the 1-15 season? no peyton = no chance, Curtis Painter? yikes. they completely cleaned house after that, GM/front office entire coaching staff.

31 teams don't have Peyton, not many go 1-15.

Agree.

I've recently come across some folks that are completely unaware that Tom Moore was in Indy.

Some of this talk is also reminiscent of that Jets team that people called the best 1-15 team ever for months, as if it was an accomplishment.

Really? That's interesting. I missed him coaching.

The young Bills WRs showed some promise. The Redskins have one WR and the rest make me uneasy. They did produce well during RGIII's rookie year. This is interesting.

When Ike played he was good and had some toughness to him. A zillion Florida WRs didn't pan out and he seemed like the only one. It was probably every other year, maybe a little more often like 2 of 3, that a Florida WR was a wasted dynasty pick as a rook and you could grab Ike super late and he'd be a fine bye week cover.

Tom Moore was in detroit for years with Wayne Fontes and Scott Mitchell.

The coaches that are associated with Peyton hardly get any credit, not sure if Tom Moore is a genius or not. But he had a good blue print in Detroit with some talent

That's about what Norv has to do in Minny. The same transformation Moore had to do with a Barry team in Detroit. It needs to still be a whole lot of ADP, but the passing game needs to come to life.

Moore is a consultant/part time coach nowadays. I don't imagine he signs anywhere for more than a year nor that he's real expensive. I wonder if Caldwell and Co will ask him to consult there this year. That might make for some interesting articles and reactions by Stafford as well.

Do we know Caldwell wasn't under orders to not pick up a better free agent QB?

Clearly IND was in lose for Luck mode, I'm not convinced that wasn't Irsay's doing.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Broncos OC Adam Gase is leaning toward remaining with Denver next season rather than pursue the Browns head-coaching job.
Gase is expected to interview with the Browns after he's eliminated from the playoffs, but reportedly loves his job in Denver and "relishes the idea" of spending a second season as Peyton Manning's offensive coordinator. It's a similar situation to Josh McDaniels, who withdrew his name from Cleveland's head-coaching search earlier this month. Gase, 35, is currently the NFL’s fourth-youngest offensive coordinator and may not be ready to run an entire team. He could wait until next year before making the leap to head coach.

Vikings hired ex-Browns OC Norv Turner as offensive coordinator.
Turner is the second coordinator to leave the Browns this week after DC Ray Horton signed with the Titans. In Minnesota, he'll have complete control of the offense under defensive-minded HC Mike Zimmer and will be tasked with turning around one of the NFL's least effective units in 2013. The Vikings have major concerns at quarterback, but Turner's aggressive passing scheme should maximize the talents of Cordarrelle Patterson and Greg Jennings. He also figures to incorporate more of a run-first approach behind Adrian Peterson after ranking 27th in rushing offense with the Browns this past season. Turner is an upgrade over Bill Musgrave's conservative, West Coast system.

Seems a wise and respectable move.

Way nuttier than the Browns or Colts is the Redskins situation:

Jay Gruden as HC while promoting the TE coach to OC and keeping the DC for one of the worst defenses in the league.

Griffin needs a brilliant, innovative playcaller who can use his special skills. They bring in the OC for Andy Dalton and just lead the offense into another year of falling behind in games.

Hey even Orlovsky did pretty ok (went 2-3, almost beat the Pats), he had to be under orders to play Painter.

thatentire team was built around manning, no plan b. defense is built to play with a lead, offense was built around skill position players because manning's quick play diagnosis can offset a subpar o line without manning the o line deficiencies magnified, causing the offense to sputter, and forcing a defense to play from behind that is not built to do that.

New head coach Bill O'Brien will call the offensive plays for the Texans.

O'Brien last called plays in the NFL as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots in 2011. Guided by Tom Brady, they ranked third in pass attempts (612) and 17th in rush attempts (438). O'Brien will likely have a rookie under center in 2014, but that is unlikely to stop him from skewing toward the pass game at least slightly. True freshman Christian Hackenberg attempted 32.6 passes per game for Penn State in 2013.

Texans hired Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator.

The Texans finally make it official, inking Crennel to a three-year deal. It's a natural fit as he runs the 3-4 scheme Wade Phillips used for the last three seasons and Crennel is a Bill Belichick disciple -- just like new offensive-minded head coach Bill O'Brien. Fueled by J.J. Watt, the former Browns and Chiefs head coach will have an excellent chance to turn around a Texans defense that gave up the eighth-most points in the league last year. They ranked seventh in yards allowed.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Browns want to interview Bills DC Mike Pettine for their head-coaching vacancy a second time this week.

Pettine interviewed for the job Thursday. Per FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Pettine was very impressive the first time. Gase reportedly doesn't even want the Cleveland job and may not interview. Quinn is interested and will also get a second interview.

Ex-Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey will join the Titans' coaching staff.

Mularkey will either be Tennessee's quarterbacks or tight ends coach under Ken Whisenhunt. The 52-year-old was out of coaching in 2013 after lasting just one season as the Jaguars head coach. Mularkey has previously coached tight ends in Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Miami and played the position professionally.
