What would Gerald McCoy tell players who are about to play for Ron Rivera? "One of the best things to ever happen in your career is about to happen. One of the greatest men I've ever been around. One of the greatest coaches I've been around."
Redskins don't have their 2nd or 6th round picks (and no extra picks in any round till the 7th). I wouldn't mind a trade down so long as it's a haul.Yep, no brainer pick at 1.2 UNLESS someone offers us an RG3 like haul to move back. And the Panthers doing that wouldn't surprise me. 1.7 would still land us a top 2 OT, stud CB, or even WR if we went that route. If that netted us the Panthers 2nd, and a future 2021 1st I'd say its worth the trade down, otherwise take Chase and we become a stout D with proper coaching.

Source close to Steve Wilks said at this time he does not expect him to join Ron Rivera in Washington as the DC. Had coached with him in Carolina.
I think we should trade down, get picks and go OT first round. Yes Young is good but we need OL, CB, and TE depth more and multiple high picks will be more impactful. Even IF Trent comes back hes on borrowed time. I still say Thomas is the smart first round pick...Yep, no brainer pick at 1.2 UNLESS someone offers us an RG3 like haul to move back. I can confirm the Redskins fired Eric Schaffer. He's worked there 17 years.
Adam Schefter just said the same.Jack Del Rio expected to be our DC.
I agree it looks like the other times, but this purge is a bit bigger than ones during previous HC hirings. I think a lot will change as a result. If we get a competent, strong GM who works well with Rivera, if the 2 of them don't run to Snyder with disagreements, and if play on the field improves steadily --- that's the best chance for stability and (finally) some winning football. But why will Rivera succeed where Gibbs failed? Allen is out, but will the next guy be better than Cerrato? Washington has been about signing the big, popular name for decades, and sadly to little effect. Having a hard time thinking that this time will be any different than the previous 3-5 injections of hope.

The Ron Rivera-Jack Del Rio team in Washington will be a strong one. In 2002, Del Rio took over the league’s worst defense in Carolina and turned it into the NFL’s second-ranked unit; in 2012 he took Broncos from 20th-ranked defense to second.

Jack Del Rio's two stints as defensive coordinator..
2002 Panthers: 2nd in total defense
2012 Broncos: 2nd
2013 Broncos: 19th
2014 Broncos: 3rd

So - A few nuggets on Del Rio:
- Well schooled in both the 4-3 and 3-4 D
- Very aggressive, attacking defense, with lot's of exotic blitzes.
- Disguises coverages well on the back-end but doesn't get to fancy - seems to stick with what works.
- Adapts scheme to fit his talent

Eric Schaffer is still with the #Redskins and told me he is currently working in his office. He’s one of the most respected members of the organization. League people, players and agents all think highly of him. Would be surprised if he doesn’t remain with team.
JP Finlay
@JPFinlayNBCS
Schaffer not just still in, but literally still in the building at Redskins Park. My guess is Dan Snyder is trying to sniff out some leaks.
A bag of lettuce is better than Allen. I don't think you understand just how bad this guy was. You can say MOTS if you want, but NO reclamation could possibly begin until this step was taken.Allen is out, but will the next guy be better than Cerrato?
... You poor soul. You poor, poor, poor soul.I think we got the very best candidate on the market, this is a great start to our off-season. And I agree with fatness, we actually owe a TON of gratitude to Trent Williams. I think he's one of the main reasons Dan HAD to make the moves he's making. If he returns, and Guice is healthy next year, I think we can win the division. I really do (of course, that's not saying much in our crappy NFC East )
Finlay botched "Larry Hess is safe". Copeland botched "Alex Santos is gone".Didn’t the local media botch a firing yesterday too?
On Tuesday morning, word emerged that Eric Schaffer, a long-time employee who holds the titles of V.P. of football operations and general counsel, has been fired. Then, multiple reports emerged that Schaffer hasn’t been fired.
Some have suggested that the report that Schaffer is out has been planted in order to identify leakers. Others have suggested that the report that Schaffer is safe has been planted to identify leakers.
Meanwhile, what’s the truth? It’s this, we’re told: Schaffer will be leaving the organization in May, after the draft.
The reports emerged not as a test of loyalty or whatever but because Schaffer started telling people on Monday that he is out. But the organization plans to keep him around (and to keep him working) through free agency and the draft.
It remains to be seen whether Washington hires a G.M. (or someone with similar authority) before the draft or after it. Either way, the current plan is for Schaffer to stay until May.
Rivera, the former coach of the Carolina Panthers, reached an agreement with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder after the two met Monday, the individuals said. Rivera was working Tuesday to assemble a staff of assistant coaches, while the Redskins were in the process of reconfiguring their front office in a manner that was acceptable to Rivera, according to multiple people familiar with the team’s planning.
Hmm, I’m still not a big fan that the front office stuff wasn’t figured out/finalized more before the HC hire. Just seems backwards, IMO. I’m sure there are examples where it’s worked, but history seems to suggest (to me) that this is putting the cart before the horse....while the Redskins were in the process of reconfiguring their front office in a manner that was acceptable to Rivera...
O'Connell might stay.Adam SchefterVerified account @AdamSchefter
New Washington HC Ron Rivera has hired former Raiders’ and Jaguars’ HC Jack Del Rio as the Redskins’ new defensive coordinator, per source. Rivera’s first big coaching hire in Washington.

On the new staff for #Redskins coach Ron Rivera: — He’ll interview OC Kevin O’Connell for that same job, source said & O’Connell has a chance to stick. His work with QB Dwayne Haskins impressed. — Jack Del Rio will be the new DC and will call plays. Rivera did it in Carolina.

Rapoport reporting Del Rio will call plays. Indicates to me that Del Rio will run his defense, which is more man-coverage based than Rivera’s predominantly zone based schemes.

Staying consistent on what I've heard about O'Connell. This is going to be a two-way interview. Rivera has to figure out if he wants Kevin, which I presume will happen. Kevin also has to figure out if he wants to stay. Rivera has to sell things will be VERY different.
It is definitely backwards. Hire the HC, then the HC has input on the front office configuration and hires. They also draft the QB, gets 1 year with old coach, then next coach inherits the QB. That happened with RGIII too.Hmm, I’m still not a big fan that the front office stuff wasn’t figured out/finalized more before the HC hire. Just seems backwards, IMO. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/01/01/jack-del-rio-defensive-coordinator-redskins-ron-rivera/In confirming his hire Wednesday morning, Del Rio said he will run a 4-3 defense — a dramatic change from the 3-4 scheme Washington had been using. The new scheme should emphasize one of Washington’s biggest strengths — a group of gifted defensive linemen that includes recent first-round picks Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, as well as rising star Matt Ioannidis and Tim Settle, who played well last season. Pass rusher Montez Sweat, a first-round pick last spring, could also benefit from the new defense as might Ryan Kerrigan, whose statistics declined last season.
While a 4-3 should decrease the times pass rushers like Sweat and Kerrigan are dropped into coverage, the specifics of the sub-packages will have a heavy influence.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/12/30/some-redskins-fans-bruce-allens-firing-was-best-day-ever/With the NFL regular season complete and no more content to produce, ESPN fantasy football guru and die-hard Redskins fan Matthew Berry slept in for a change Monday. After celebrating his birthday with family Sunday night, he awoke to congratulatory texts and messages, including several related to his favorite team.
“I realized that of all the gifts I got, perhaps the best one was my Washington Redskins announcing that Bruce Allen is no longer with the organization,” Berry said in a video he posted on Twitter. #FireBruceAllen actually worked. So, I’m back. I’m back as a fan, baby.”
“I think the fans’ voice is stronger than they realize,” former Redskins running back Clinton Portis told Rouhier’s co-host, Grant Paulsen, on Monday. “Often the fans have a movement or ask for something, and then all of a sudden they get it. Just the attendance at games, and constantly the hashtag, I think eventually it happens. … Once the attendance slips and you’re not putting a winning product on the field, someone has to take the blame."
While some fans saved their money to protest Allen this season, retired banking executive Chuck Coltman paid $1,600 to fly a banner over Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium for two hours before the Redskins played the Dolphins in October. “Help Skins Fans Fire Bruce Allen!” the banner read.
“I’ve certainly determined it was worth every dollar, even if it only impacted it slightly,” Coltman, who has followed the Redskins since 1956, said in a phone interview Monday. “… I’m a happy camper. I was worried that he would stay in some form and still have Mr. Snyder’s ear, so to hear that he’s out of the organization made me very happy.”
Great info, As a Phinsfan we've suffered for a long long time as well, it feels like we might have a keeper in Flores and I do like Ron Rivera. Are the Skins going to the Super Bowl? That's hard to forecast but I do think 2 of the next 4 seasons you will win the NFC East or make a playoff run that will have the fan base energized.
https://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-41089723-4Bill Callahan won't return to the Redskins under new coach Ron Rivera, per source. Callahan was Washington's offensive line coach from 2015-16 and became an assistant head coach/offensive line coach from 2017-19. He took over as the interim coach after Jay Gruden was fired. The Redskins went 3-8 under Callahan.
I'm impressed with how Flores got the Dolphins roster to turn themselves around. They're an actual team already, and look like they'll get better.Great info, As a Phinsfan we've suffered for a long long time as well, it feels like we might have a keeper in Flores and I do like Ron Rivera.

Bill Callahan and most of Redskins defensive staff is out, per sources. Some offensive assistants and staff will interview with Ron Rivera, including Kevin O’Connell, but right now, no holdovers definitively have a job on the new staff.
This is illegal in 17 statesI suppose some munchkin frolicking is in order?
I get the BPA argument but I fear if we go Young we're gonna have NOTHING at offensive line. I am not banking on Trent coming back. And if Trent comes back, I'm not banking on him being healthy. Many of the others are breaking down or free agents. This is why I'd advocate looking for a trade down partner. I think one of the top two offensive linemen could be had further down the top 10. Get an anchor on the offensive line + more picks because we have other needs such as CB depth, TE, and RB depth (seriously worried about injuries there). Will be interesting to see what personnel changes are made with a switch to 4-3 as the "base" defense. Nickel is really the "base" defense in today's NFL, so I don't think it's a big deal, but worth discussing who on the roster fits and who doesn't.
DT: Payne, Ioannidis, Settle
DE: Allen, Sweat, Young
WLB: Dion-Hamilton, Harvey-Clemons
MLB: Bostic, Holcomb
SLB: Anderson, Orchard
That's a really good DL rotation. Allen can probably play some DT, too.
Ryan Anderson could make a really good SLB. He's considered good against the run and seems to do a good job of taking on blockers.
Bostic and Holcomb can fight for the MLB spot. Not sure if either would be considered a 3-down LB or not.
Just totally guessing at WLB. Harvey-Clemons is listed as a SS, but he has LB size so could be a good fit there. Also, I read how Rivera/Del Rio like to use a hybrid S/LB which could fit nicely for Collins for Harvey-Clemons
I left Kerrigan out of the above depth chart. Saw a tweet where Kerrigan said he'd have to add 10-15 pounds to play a 4-3 DE. He's due $11m (?) in his last year on his contract. If they need/want that cap room, I'm afraid he's gone since he's starting to decline and he's not a great fit for the 4-3. But, he has made it clear he wants to be here. So maybe he's willing to take a significant cut and they can just use him as a pass rush specialist in nickel/dime and not sue him at all in 4-3.
Chase Young probably isn't a huge need but I'm a BPA guy and I can't imagine passing on a huge talent at 1.02 in order to address some immediate need.
I think they should address DB needs in FA (and draft a DB or two) and possibly even a MLB if the right guy is out there. A lot of times the MLB is the QB of the defense and I'm not sure if the roster has that kind of leader right now.
ETA: I forgot about Reuben Foster. Possible MLB.
For me, I don't think OL has to be a top draft priority. In no particular order, I would put CB, LB (mostly MLB) and TE ahead of OL as the 'Skin's top positional needs. I'm like dgreen in that I'd much rather see 1.2 used on the BPA over just filling a position of need. Also, even though this OL unit was cobbled together with a hodge-podge of FA castoffs, I think the 'Skins OL still did alright this season. PFF even just ranked them as the 13th best unit in the NFL for the 2019 season.MikeApf said:DGreen I know you definitely understand football, so I'm not challenging your thinking but just wondering what you would do in this situation to address offensive line. I feel with a young QB we are trying to develop, there is some level of urgency to provide a running game and QB protection in 2020 or we may ruin the kid. So, I am not saying OL simply to "win now" but even to develop for the future. You know?
Holy crap, how cool is that. Not that I know any more than the next Average Joe (no pun intended) about Xs and Os, but that would be a dream come true, to hang out with Gibbs, having him draw up plays and talk about how he sees the game. After talking to Snyder, Rivera reached out to Gibbs once again, where the Super Bowl-winning head coach invited Rivera to his home.
"We spent a good afternoon going over a lot of stuff. Coach gave me so much insight, it was amazing," Rivera told Michael. "To be able to go into his home and spend time with him, that was cool...Probably one of the coolest things that happened was he started drawing plays up. We started talking about how he did it and how he looked at things."
That's basically where I'm at. My assumption is none of these changes will work, so what's the point of getting excited? I took a wait-and-see approach with McCloughan and that helped me not be so disappointed when they fired him. I'm still interested in watching them and I like a lot of the young talent, but I'm not going to expect anything good comes out of this.Sidewinder16 said:Man, I really want to get all the warm fuzzies after watching Rivera’s press conference, but I’ve got 20 years of scar tissue buildup that just won’t allow it. My New Years Resolution is to wait until this time next year in order to decide on whether I jump back in to Redskins fandom with both feet, or not. I keep reminding myself that Snyder is still ultimately in charge of all of this.
I heard he started today's PC off with "Happy Thanksgiving".ETA: Speaking of Snyder, it’s easier now to see why he doesn’t get behind a mic, like ever. Pretty sure he has a healthy fear of public speaking. He is not comfortable, at all, doing it. Saw this on Twitter and agree, that in his position and with his money some professional public speaking training would do him worlds of good.
