OW Louis Rees-Zammit, KC (1 Viewer)

I understand the lack of a good position to classify him as, but what is your intention with "OW"?

Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reports the Chiefs are signing rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit to play RB/WR.
Rees-Zammit is a 23-year-old Welsh rugby player who joined the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program earlier this year. He visited the Browns, Jets, Broncos, and Chiefs, impressing the Chiefs enough to sign him. Rees-Zammit has played rugby in Wales, England, and internationally. The reigning champion Chiefs now add him with the intent of trying to play him at running back and/or wide receiver.

Reminds me of when the Eagles signed Jeremy Bloom. I actually went to the Eagles camp that year and while Jeremy was undoubtedly fast, he couldn't even get off the line against NFL caliber defensive backs.

I wonder if this is maybe to make him a kick return specialist under the new rules?

I have to imagine it’s most for special teams. As athletic as he may be, it’s hard to imagine him playing RB or WR at a level better than any NFL players, even backups.

This got me thinking of Christian Okoye with respect to highly athletic but in-experienced RB for the Chiefs.

The Nigerian Nightmare actually did not start playing football until he was a year older then Rees-Lightning is now.

Crazy to think he went 35th overall in the draft as a 26 year old rookie RB. How things have changed.

They've always had international player(s) and a mindset towards the world audience. Not surprising.

Rugby players have tried the NFL before

“Louis Rees-Zammit is a 6'3", 194lb Welsh rugby player, who previously was a wing/full-back (read: fast perimeter player). Louis was one of the better rugby players in the world, and left his sport at 23 years old to come to America to try to play in the NFL, having learned the game at his father's knee who played professional American football in Europe. It was always Louis' dream to play in the NFL, but he grew up in rugby country, so he took the next best thing. Louis has never played a competitive down of professional American football in a game. He is currently training at the International Player Pathway Program to learn 24.2 mph at the Rugby World Cup last year is VERY impressive. For reference, the fastest a player ran in the NFL last season was Tyreek Hill in week 5, when his top speed hit 22.01 mph.”

Was wondering if there was a thread for this guy already. As stated already, I think it's not unreasonable to think he makes a difference on special teams, specifically with the new kickoff rules - will clearly take some time to adjust to the sport, but he's got time on his side to do so and it's hard to believe that they wouldn't be able to construct some packages where they can utilise the skillset he has
