Ponder (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Speaking Tuesday, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier again endorsed Christian Ponder (ribs) as his starting quarterback, but said he's "still injured," and will be re-evaluated on Monday.
Frazier stopped well short of guaranteeing Ponder will be under center when the Vikings come off their Week 5 bye, but did his best to tamp down the burgeoning quarterback controversy in Minnesota. We wouldn't be surprised if the Vikings exercised "extreme caution" with Ponder, giving Matt Cassel another week to showcase his wares against the Panthers. Ponder's job should be considered in limbo until we actually see him make another start.

Funny, meanwhile in the Cassel note:

Matt Cassel completed 16-of-25 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's Week 4 win over the Steelers.
Cassel didn't have any turnovers and was a clear upgrade over Christian Ponder. He got both Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson involved in the offense and was able to effectively manage the game. After leading the Vikings to their first win of the season, Cassel should keep the starting job even when Ponder returns. He averaged 9.9 yards-per-attempt and finished with a 123.4 quarterback rating.
I think this is a bigger deal for Jennings, Simpson and Patterson, maybe AP too.

Rotoworld:

According to ESPN 1500 Twin Cities' Judd Zulgad, Christian Ponder has a fractured rib near his heart.
Zulgad suspects Ponder will wind up missing 3-4 games. He already missed Week 4, and the Vikings are on a Week 5 bye. So per Zulgad's projection, Ponder should be healthy by Week 8 or 9. This will be Matt Cassel's window to steal the starting job for good. Despite coach Leslie Frazier's public denials, multiple national reports have indicated Cassel is very much in the hunt to start for Minnesota the rest of the way, dependent upon short-term performance.

Rotoworld:

Christian Ponder has not demanded a trade.

Ponder played behind Matt Cassel last week and the Vikings have since named Josh Freeman their starter going forward. That leaves the No. 12 overall pick in the 2011 draft with an uncertain future. "I have to figure out what's best for me and everything and for this team," Ponder said Wednesday. "I don't know if that's staying here or going somewhere else." His rookie deal is up after the 2014 season.

Once I saw news that Freeman was concussed, I went to the ww to pickup the Packer Defense.

It can't take much for his confidence to be shattered on SNF

Rotoworld:

Following Matt Cassel's decision to opt out, Christian Ponder will be the only quarterback on the Vikings roster.

It's a scary statement for Vikings fans. They own the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, but the top-three quarterbacks (Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles) could easily be gone by the time they're on the clock. GM Rick Spielman needs to either swing a trade on draft day, re-sign Cassel or find another bridge quarterback. It's highly unlikely that Spielman or new coach Mike Zimmer see Ponder as a realistic option.

Anyone have any clue why cassel opted out? 3.7mill to be a backup /maybe compete with a rook seems like a good deal to me for cassel.

Probably because he'd just be holding the clipboard quickly.

No assurances from coaching/management.

No outcry from the fan base on his behalf.

Giving up money to hopefully get some 1st string action.

Can play back-up in lots of locations.

Still hoping he can live the NFL dream of a starting QB.

seems like he's got just as good a chance in minny as anywhere else seeing as they don't have anyone else

Maybe if there hadn't been a coaching change. They like to bring in their own guys. He just got ahead of the curve before they cut or perma-benched him. More time to find a new team.

Rotoworld:

Vikings GM Rick Spielman promised Friday that Christian Ponder "will be here" on the 2014 roster.
Spielman made it clear, however, that he is looking to add a young quarterback and will probably bolster the roster with two more signal callers via offseason moves. Matt Cassel and Josh Freeman are free agents. The Vikings may have interest in retaining Cassel, but he'll almost certainly go to the highest bidder. Spielman is very likely to use an early-round draft pick at quarterback.

Nice work Ponder, stealing that TD from pretty much every other Viking player started out there in fantasy land.

Rotoworld:

Raiders signed QB Christian Ponder, formerly of the Vikings.
Ponder has ties to Raiders OC Bill Musgrave and is the favorite to back up Derek Carr, where he'll likely be competing with Matt McGloin. His signing makes Matt Schaub expendable. The Raiders can save $5.5 million by cutting Schaub.

49ers coach Chip Kelly said the team is looking at every option at quarterback.
Kelly might not have said it, but this almost confirms the 49ers are making a quarterback change this week. Colin Kaepernick looked broken last season, but the 49ers might as well see what they have in him after watching Blaine Gabbert face plant for five weeks. It would not be surprising if Christian Ponder made starts this season as well.
