Major-league sources have confirmed that the Rangers and Ben Sheets had agreed to an incentive-laden two-year deal, but it was nixed when a torn flexor tendon was discovered during a physical with Rangers doctors.

Sheets is considering surgery that would keep him out for 2009. General manager Jon Daniels would not comment on Sheets' health, but said the lines of communication remain open. However, he added, "I'm not expecting a deal of any sort of deal at this point."

Daniels doesn't expect the Rangers to do anything significant before pitchers and catchers report to spring training Feb. 14.

Assuming he has the surgery now and there are no problems, he should be able to pitch by mid season............BUT with the surgery AND the fact that a team signing him would be forced to give up a 1st round draft pick, he will be signed by someone - but not UNTIL after the draft this year when the compensation pick would no longer be applicable.

The only exception to this would be if the Brewers worked out a deal with him because they could sign him at any time....cheap but something for this year with incentives heavy for this year and next and requiring passing multiple physicals would be reasonable.

Report: Sheets to undergo elbow surgery

A source told CBSSports.com that free agent Ben Sheets will soon undergo surgery to repair the torn flexor tendon in his elbow.

Dr. James Andrews is expected to perform the procedure, which would sideline Sheets into August at least. It's not a particularly difficult surgery to come back from, but Sheets still might be a non-factor in 2009. Feb. 5 - 3:38 pm et

The Brewers really lucked out that Jen Sheets turned down their arbitration offer -- otherwise they would be stuck with another year of $12 million for an injured sheets.

I'm not an expert on the CBA or MLBPA rules or anything but had he signed, couldn't they cut still him and only be on the hook for 1/6 of that?Would he have even passed the initial physical?

Baseball contracts cannot be just "cut" like in football - they would have had to pay him but would have recovered most of it via insuranceSince he was with the Brewers last year he likely would not have even had a "contract physical"

Sheets did find another way to screw them, they were due a 1st round pick by whoever signed him. Not anymore, obviously.

They also are on the hook for his surgery expense. Can't wait for Sheets to be some other teams problem.
