snap, crackle, and MORE SNAPS! (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I'm taking thread title suggestions.

I don't actually have any content at this time, but with snap counts now being a free stat in the nfl gamebooks and posted on football outsiders, instead of just kept over at profootbalfocus, I thought we could note interesting snap count observations in here.

GO!!

a select few cle idp actually played 95 snaps in week one -- that's a lot.

by way of contrast, tampa's finest saw 52 that week.

Week 1 New England RT

Vollmer 51% 34/67

Cannon 57% 38/67

Not sure what the Week 2 breakdown is yet, but I saw the game and Vollmer started and Cannon rotated in quite a bit for what seemed like whole series. Cannon did not look good in pass protection in terms of fundamentals. Bad balance and footwork.

I'm not sure if this is an injury rotation or what.

vollmer had a back issues -- he missed most of camp.

cannon was filling in while he was out, and I'd imagine they're working vollmer back in.

if he can stay healthy, he should return to full time RT with cannon as our 3rd tackle.

edit

thank you, mike reiss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Starting right tackle Sebastian Vollmer continues to be be eased into the mix as he recovers from a back injury that sidelined him for part of the 2011 season and 2012 training camp.

After splitting reps evenly with Marcus Cannon at right tackle in the season-opener (link here) -- Vollmer 33 and Cannon 34 -- the two split time again in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, although the signs are trending toward Vollmer being ready to assume a full-time load.

Vollmer played 62 snaps at right tackle against the Cardinals, while Cannon played 20.

Here is the breakdown, with drive results:

1. Vollmer (1 play; INT)

2. Vollmer (11 plays; FG)

3. Vollmer (4 plays; punt)

4. Cannon (6 plays; FG)

5. Cannon (4 plays; punt)

6. Vollmer (7 plays; punt)

---- ---- ---- ----

7. Vollmer (6 plays; FG)

8. Vollmer (3 plays; punt)

9. Vollmer (12 plays; punt)

10. Cannon (5 plays; punt)

11. Cannon (5 plays; punt)

12. Vollmer (12 plays; TD/failed 2-point)

13. Vollmer (6 plays; missed FG)

Maybe somewhere, on some site, exist a statistic "Pressure percentage"?

I mean - defensive line pressure percentage, or LB ... but by player, no by team?

Is there something like that :) ?

profootballfocus has a kind of pressure % stat -- just go over there and browse around.

you'd have to subscribe to get a list of players, but they have numerous free articles that cite their stats.

and there's something like this over at advanced nfl stats.

week 3 is up!

just noticed sd defense only faced 42 snaps in week 2 -- pretty puny.

atl (v car) -- looked like they were only in nickel about half the snaps, so dent sucked up 30 snaps compared to 20 the previous week, and only a total of 12 the first 2 weeks

bal (v cle) - mclellan 36 (51%), ellerbe 34 (48%), upshaw 52 (73%), kruger 45 (53%)

buf (v pats) - b scott 68 (88%), sheppard 10 (13%), g wilson 77 (100%)

buf in nickel all day, but draws sf next week

car (@ atl) - j anderson 44 (63%), kuechly 28 (40%), davis 28 (40%)

chi (@ dal) - pretty heavy d-line rotation with 7 guys getting 50-60% snaps

cin (@ jax) - burfict and maualuga every down (~60), mays (95%)

burfict probably the story here, as he doubled his involvement, and has seemed to have completed siphoning snaps from rey -- managed 8 solos against a jax off that doesn't yield much

den (v oak) - woodyard 55 (98%), brooking 28 (50%)

gb (v no) - hawk 27 (35%), dj smith 69 (88%)

looks like nickel half the game, and dime the other half

mia (@ ari) - k misi only 37 (51%)

nep (@ buf) - spikes 54 (78%)

no (@ gb) - looks like nickel all games with lofton getting all 70 snaps

oak (@ den) - mostly nickel with burris the loser at only 28 snaps (36%)

shaughnessy 47 (60%)

phi (v nyg) - kendricks and ryans every down

witherspoon loses a big chunk to diles after week 3 yielded 80% for him, and only a handful for diles

was (@ tb) - doughty 52 (87%), gomes not much

Great post and thank you for the time and effort KAL.

To me the biggest and best info (Because I snagged him) is the Burfict numbers, I grabbed him and Rey, just to be safe and glad I did. Looks like Rey can be dropped, but I will hold off 1 more week to make sure things remain the same. I still wonder if they kept Burfict on the field because they were playing the Jags, which is a short pass/run oriented offense and felt he gave them the best match-up. Which is why I will keep Rey to be sure this is how it will be going forward.

ari (@ stl) - dockett 19 (34%)

atl (@ was) - nicholas 37 (73%), dent 28 (55%), abraham 33 (65%)

think I remember something about a nicholas injury -- anyway, second straight week dent has managed ~30 snaps, and they look like they only played nickel about half the time, which is not so unusual.

I don't know if it was losing grimes, poor run d, or just opponent, but it looks like they've scaled back the base nickel recently.

week 8 player notes

atl (@ phi) - 'spoon 47 (75%), dent 22 (35%), nicholas 58 (92%), mcclain (cb) 57 (90%)

I think 'spoon had a little issue and was maybe replaced towards the end -- looks like they returned to the nickle heavy look coming out of their bye vs philly.

philly was 3 wide most of the game.

car (@ chi) - nakamura 27 (49%), martin 28 (51%)

cle (v sd) - johnson 44 (64%), robertson 23 (33%), maiava 44 (64%)

johnson cashed in on his 50% bump in playing time for a 5-5 tackle line

dal (v nyg) - carter 60 (100%), connor 10 (17%), three with 10-23

I think connor had some kind of stinger

den (v no) - woodyard 61 (100%), trevathan 26 (43%), brooking 22 (36%)

det (v sea) - palmer 35 (62%)

palmer subs for levy

gb (v jax) - hawk 58 (75%), jones 77 (100%), hayward 70 (90%)

hayward subs for woodson/shields and moves to slot in nickel

ind (@ ten) - angerer 24 (41%), conner 23 (39%), vaughn 56 (95%)

vaughn subs for vontae davis, probably ongoing

no (@ den) - vilma 62 (84%)

nyg (@ dal) - rivers 45 (52%), blackburn 52 (60%), kiwanuka 39 (45%), herzlich 7 (8%)

think they had a couple injuries

nyj (v mia) - davis 60 (98%), b thomas 48 (79%)

davis subs for scott, not much nickel

oak (@ kc) - mcclain 23 (37%)

phi (v atl) - kendricks 58 (77%), jordan 37 (49%), matthews 19 (25%), babin 33 (44%)

tb (@min) - foster 32 (53%), david 60 (100%)

ten (v ind) - mccarthy 73 (96%), ayers 36 (47%), brown 56 (74%), babineaux 74 (97%), johnson 17 (22%)

The Titans will use weak-side linebacker Zach Brown more in the nickel package and will start using strong-side linebacker Akeem Ayers as a rush end in that grouping more often, according to Munchak.

was (@ pit) - pugh 29 (48%), doughty 31 (51%)

There was a link to a site that had the snap counts of every defensive player ... does anyone know where that is

Atlanta Falcons DE John Abraham (back) and DT Vance Walker (ribs) were all limited in practice Friday, Nov. 16, and are questionable for Week 11. LB Sean Weatherspoon (ankle) did not participate in practice and is questionable.

Great matchup for Abraham. Wonder how this injury will affect his performance if he does play.

He is still questionable at this point, I think if he plays he will be fine. The bigger question to me is, if he doesn't play who is the bump? Sidbury has been there a while and has never really produced, but hasn't had much opportunity either. But it would seem like he gets the chance with Edwards gone.
