Vegas (2 Viewers)

Heading to Vegas on Tuesday for my first of three work trips over the next 4 months. This trip is Cosmopolitan, next is Caesar's, third is Vdara (conference is at Bellagio).

Two nights in Vegas. I get in around 6:45p on Tuesday and will probably find a place to eat at the Cosmo, have a few beers, maybe roll the bones for an hour or so and then shut it down. Don't have much to do on Wednesday other than a rehearsal for my speaking engagement on Thursday morning so I may spend a little time gambling after getting some work done and getting a workout in. Leaving around 12p on Thursday to head back to Miami.

Any suggestions for dinner at the Cosmo? Eggslut looks good for breakfast. Anyone tried Blue Ribbon, China Poblano (stupid name), Holsteins for burgers, Momofuku, Wicked Spoon or Zuma?

Milos. I've written about it in this thread. It's Greek. It's great. It's a little upscale if you're avoiding that, but seriously good. I was going back for my second taste the last time I posted here. I've been a half dozen times now (every time I've been to Vegas where I have family and visit often).

Egg Slut was absolutely mobbed every time I went by the place, so if you go there, be ready for a wait. We didn't eat there because of the lines.

I enjoyed both China Poblano and Holsteines. My preference would be China Poblano, but I'm a sucker for guacamole and good tacos and margaritas. Mind you, I'm not really recommending China Poblano, just that, given your options, it was pretty decent.

I'm sure there are better tacos out there and there are for sure better restaurants in Vegas, but overall, it was pretty decent.

Now that the likelyhood that sports gambling will be in Jersey by football season (I know it’s not guaranteed) some folks in my crew are talking about Atlantic City instead of Vegas this year.

Are the two even comparable?  Are the casinos easily walkable to/from each other?  Can you openly on the street?

Someone talk me off a ledge here (or give me ammo to go back to them with)

You can buy legal weed in Vegas.

I’m comparing someplace I’ve been once to someplace I’ve been 25 times but from what I saw last year the answers are yes it’s close/walkable, no it’s not comparable. The question is whether this ruling will revive some of the casinos that had closed there doors. The Vegas vibe is not replicated in Atlantic City even though they do have a version of the strip that could be good again if the casinos all get rolling again.

A couple random questions for our upcoming trip:

Any suggestions for authentic Chinese food?  Can be off strip.  Wife is Chinese so we are not looking for something Americanized.

Is gambling for the World Cup going to be a big thing at sportsbooks (ideally Mandalay Bay)?

Restaurant recommendations for Freemont area?

Not really. There is a beach, but Vegas >>> AC. Yes, casinos are very walkable (via the boardwalk even) but those are the older, dumper ones. The nicer ones, like Borgata, are kind of off by themselves. Assuming the missing word in that last question is "drink," no. It never stopped me but it's against the law to drink on the street in NJ. Maybe you can on the boardwalk, but I doubt it.

There's a lot of Asian restaurants on Spring Mountain Road & South Valley View, just off the strip. Capital Seafood Restaurant or Kung Fu Thai and Chinese Restaurant are both good. The whole area is pretty interesting. It's our China/Koreatown area. Might want to check out Lucky Dragon Hotel and Casino, it's relatively new. http://luckydragonlv.com/

They’ll have tons of betting options for the WC, but the time change will probably make it not a huge thing for people watching at the book. Almost all of these games will be over by noon Vegas time. In my experience, even college football saturdays are pretty tame for the morning games.

Exactly the area I'm looking for.  Even see a Korean BBQ place that uses charcoal in their grills.  Awesome.

Good summary.

A.C. has some decent beaches/towns close by (Ocean City is a great place for family beach vacations).

Staying at Cosmo in a couple weeks. Does the $20 sandwich really work? Was hoping for an upgrade. Any tips would be appreciated.

Also, best places for live music?

It may help if you're paying for your room. If you're staying on a comp, no. Make sure you have a specific room in mind like a fountain view our wraparound that's the next step up. Don't expect to get upgraded from a city studio to a wraparound fountain for $20. Let us know how it goes and have fun!

Thanks. Staying in a wraparound suite. I want a fountain/strip view. From what I have read, that's the Boulevard tower. So to go from a wraparound city to wraparound fountain, $20? $50? I just don't want to lay down $50 and not get an upgrade.

You might need to go $50. I would suggest doing the sandwich trick and ask if they're able to upgrade the room to  fountain view. They'll usually hand you the money back if they're not able to accommodate the request.

I don't think there is a reason to go to $50. If you are willing to do that, just pay for the upgrade and make sure you have your ideal room.

The $20 sandwich has worked every time I've tried at Cosmo. It was city to terrace a few times...then terrace to one bedroom...last time from one bedroom to wrap around. In the final case, I asked about a fountain view since it was my first time taking my wife with me. They had nothing available, but after a little friendly chatter he called his manager and made the change. After checking out the room, I went back to the desk and thanked him with another $20.

Just follow the normal pattern...ask for something specific, mention a special occasion if you can, and make nice conversation. If they cannot change your view, they might waive a resort fee or send up a bottle of champagne.

Edit to add: my rooms have always been fully comped.

Check out the Comedy Cellar at the Rio casino.  It's owned by the same owner of the Comedy Cellar in NYC.  The shows are showcase shows, meaning they're all headliners doing 15 minutes each.   The quality on their lineups blows any other club out of the water.

I'm staying there in two weeks - will check this out

What about good places to see/hear live music? Someone mentioned Carnaval Court.
Carnival Court has a lot of good bands.  A lot of nights they have DJ's though.  Live DJ's that play music, but I assume you are looking for live bands?

Marriott platinum members get free upgrades there. We booked a regular room and got a free upgrade to a fountain view suite.

If you know any Marriott platinum members you can probably book it with their number and get the upgrade.

We stayed at the Cosmo in a wraparound back in December. I calmly handed over my ID, credit card, and a $20 bill sandwiched in between. The young lady behind the check in counter asked me if I need change.  I already knew that she knew what I was really after. I asked if there was any upgrades to a fountain view and at first she was hesitant but said let me check. She got on the phone for a few minutes and came back with a $55/night upgrade to a fountain view or a room on the southeast corner of the Chelsea Tower which I would still be able to see the fountains and was in a room category that I already paid for. She asked at the end if the $20 was for her and I let me tell you, it was money well spent. Here's a few views from our balcony.

Looks like a fountain to me

Looks nice. So even with the $20 sandwich, you still ended up having to pay the $55/night for the upgrade?

No. It was $55 a night upgrade for a true fountain view. All of those rooms are on the north sides of the towers. I only paid $20 extra.

Also, we went during a slower time of year so that may have an affect on room availability. The only thing happening when we were there was the rodeo.
