http://money.cnn.com/2015/06/28/news/economy/greece-banks-ecb/index.html Banks in Greece will not open on Monday as officials scrambled to prevent the country's financial system from collapsing in panic.Account holders will face tough limits on what they can withdraw from ATMs, and the stock exchange will reportedly be shut.

{C}The measures were announced Sunday as Greece slid rapidly toward default and exit from the eurozone.
European leaders are now facing one of the worst moments in the history of the euro. President Obama called German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday, and the two agreed to take all steps to try to resolve the crisis.

The trigger for the rapid escalation in the crisis was the Greek government's decision late Friday to pull its negotiators out of bailout talks.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras slammed a draft proposal from Europe and the International Monetary Fund, and said he would put it to the Greek people in a referendum on July 5.

Since then, European officials have been focusing their efforts on how to limit the damage.

The European Central Bank said Sunday it would provide no new emergency support to Greek banks.

It was forced to act because without a bailout in place, Greece is heading for default as early as Tuesday, and may ultimately have to leave the euro.

People in Greece has been preparing a whole year for this. It's not really a surprise to them.
Greece is going to do what's best for Greece.

The problem is what's best for Greece isn't best for the Euro and all the derivatives non-Greece financial institutions are holding to insure against a Greece default. Because those derivatives aren't regulated, the only way to know if the insurance bets were overextended is the let the cards unfold.

Japan was down 2.25% but has reached back to down 1.75%

China is up 2.25% and was never down but they've only been open for 20 minutes.

Not sure about your thoughts but I think Greece should get the next Olympics and the World Cup that is scheduled for Qatar. Those two events should be economic boosters for the country. All Greece has to do is build a couple new stadiums and they'll be good.

I feel like I'm having flashbacks from 2010. Let me guess, another "last ditch effort" to avoid a Greek default with both sides saying dire things about the chances of an agreement coming together before a "deadline?"

:lmao:

The U.S. should make an offer. Always smart to buy low.
The problem is that it's very old. Not a lot of resale value.
Slap some new paint on it. You should be able to flip this place. http://www.philstockworld.com/wp-content/uploads/image/oia-416136_640.jpg
They actually had paint on the statues and stuff before. Do you have any idea how much repainting that stuff is going to cost?
Just spit balling here but I could get my guys to do it for 500 million 750 tops. Now this is without any unforeseen problems of course. Now if you want union guys well that's going to cost a bit more.

Why can't we just buy their land to bail them out...I'm thinking like we bought Alaska from the Russians type of transaction.

Everybody wins!

If Greece does indeed default...how will that affect the US stock market?

Watch what happens in Europe first.... Greece is the land of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They are not all dummies there.
What? Plato? Socrates? What does that have to do with modern times?
Okay, have you seen the movie 300? It is a little like that.

And framing costs - there's always framing.

Let them do it again. Everyone knows the Olympics and World Cup bring economic booms to the countries that host. Give Greece the Olympics all the time if that helps.

Hhmmm.... China wants Greece to stay in EU

I wonder if China buying up some debt could could help avert a crisis...

China wants Greece to stay in EUBy Asia Unhedged on

July 1, 2015in Asia Unhedged, China

Proclaiming that China prefers a strong euro and united European Union, China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday told Greece and its creditors to keep talking.

Greece on Tuesday defaulted in its scheduled 1.6 billion euro ($1.8 billion) loan repayment to the International Monetary Fund.

“We hope that the relevant creditors can keep talking with Greece to try and reach agreement as soon as possible and appropriately resolve the crisis now faced,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters at a regular press briefing. “From China’s point of view we hope to see that the EU and euro zone can appropriately resolve this issue and Greece can continue to remain in the euro zone. This accords with the interests of all sides. China will continue to play a constructive role in this regard.”

This reiterates comments Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said during a visit to Brussels earlier this week.

China has a lot riding on Greece staying in the EU. China is a major investor in Greek infrastructure, in euro bonds and in the EU economy as a whole. The European Union is already China’s largest trading partner, and China is the EU’s second-largest trading partner.

Greece is expected to be a major portal for China’s “One Belt One Road” strategy for distributing Chinese products into Europe and Africa by land and sea. In this plan, Greece is China’s southern gateway to Europe. Already, China’s Cosco manages two piers at the Piraeus port and is trying to buy 67% stake in the port.

“Already some observers are suggesting a Greek exit from the euro could provide China with the opportunity to move its strategic agenda several paces up the board by buying more Greek assets at rock bottom prices,” suggested the BBC. “It’s a tricky equation: on one side the soft power benefits abroad for Beijing of riding to the rescue where Brussels won’t, and on the other side, the bottom line cost of being saddled with a lot of unrecoverable Greek debt.”

Sounds to me like they are better off taking the loss on Greek debt and gobbling up Greek property cheap in the aftermath of them leaving the Euro.
