***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (7 Viewers)

25.1 scoreless innings from Porcello is longest streak by a Tiger since Jack Morris tossed 31 in a row from July 4-18, 1986.

@tigers: Rick Porcello's 25.1 consecutive scoreless innings is the longest streak for a #Tigers pitcher since Jose Valverde (25.1, 4/8-6/12/2010).

But yeah, longest for a starter...

@Dan_Dickerson: Porcello 1st #Tigers starter w/ 0K in shutout since D. Alexander in '89, first with 0BB/0K in shutout since Dizzy Trout in 1944 (B-ball Ref)

im gonna go ahead and say, Oakland is the Tigers #####
Since 06 I've never feared Oakland despite some solid clubs. Tigers just own them. If there's a positive to take from up-and-down first half it's that no other team in the AL is standing out except the one team Detroit smacks around.

Rick threw two of the sickest pitches I've ever seen him throw for two quick strikes against Gentry in the 8th. Rod was doing his "stop it" schtick but at least it was appropriate for how filthy the dive on those pitches was. Impeccable location, just stunning command from him lately.

J.J. Putz?

Drunk writer, trolling or bored? Probably no worse than letting the Hardy/McCoy/Smith baptism continue.

Who cares if the D-Backs will pay his salary. Lousy is not the answer.

Really goes to show that nice as they are, K's can be somewhat overrated compared to quicker contact outs. Higher pitch counts mean fewer complete games and fewer complete games means more Tigers bullpen. :o

I also like that last nights game was over in 2 hours and 13 minutes.

Opponent: Tampa Bay Rays

Site: Comerica Park in Detroit

Records: Tigers, 47-34 (1st in AL Central); Rays, 38-49 (5th in AL East)

Schedule:

  1. Thursday: RHP Max Scherzer (9-3, 3.64 ERA) vs. LHP Erik Bedard (4-5, 4.21 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD
  2. Friday: LHP Drew Smyly (4-7, 3.57 ERA) vs. RHP Alex Cobb (3-6, 4.20 ERA), 7:08 p.m., ESPN, FSD
  3. Saturday: RHP Anibal Sanchez (5-2, 2.63 ERA) vs. RHP Chris Archer (4-5, 3.24 ERA), 4:08 p.m., FSD
  4. Sunday: RHP Rick Porcello (11-4, 3.12 ERA) vs. LHP David Price (7-7, 3.50 ERA), 8 p.m., ESPN
Scouting the Rays: In last place in the AL East and arguably the biggest disappointment in baseball thus far, the Tampa Bay Rays travel to Detroit, the final stop on their 10-day road trip, riding a season-high five-game win streak. They've won six of their last seven and 13 of 20, yet still remain 9 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East and 10 games out of a wild-card spot.

Thursday's opener marks the first meeting of the season between the Tigers and Rays. They split the six games they played in 2013.

Tampa Bay second baseman Sean Rodriguez returned Wednesday after missing the past three games and hit a two-run homer to help the Rays complete a three-game sweep in New York. He's expected to be back in the lineup Thursday, too.

Side note: David Price, who has been the subject of trade rumors once again, will square off against Rick Porcello in a should-be pitcher's duel on ESPN's 'Sunday Night Baseball.'

If A-Jax can stay somewhat consistent in the #1 slot it makes the lineup much more formidable. Hunter seems better suited for the 6th slot. Hate to think where this team would be had the Astros not released JD.

Hunter looked completely over-matched with bases loaded and no one out. :X
That was a feeble AB. I was sitting down the first base lase and Hunter just lunged at the first two pitches. From where I was sitting they looked out of the zone. That was a huge inning in the making.

Even thought they lost the energy of the crowd was one of the best I have been to in awhile with all the July 4th stuff going on. Probably the best fireworks show I have every seen at Comerica after the game.

GAME NOTES

-- With Victor Martinez out due to soreness in his right side, J.D. Martinez will bat clean-up for fourth time and move to right field. Torii Hunter will DH for just the second time this season. Martinez did not expect to return until Tuesday.

-- Austin Jackson is leading off again after 0 for 4, four-strikeout game on Friday.

"He had a rough game," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "Last couple games he swung the bat real well. (Friday) wasn't one of his better games. (Alex) Cobb, the first five innings, kept his split-finger down and located his fastball and he pitched really well. He threw some good pitches to Austin."

--Two-time N.L. Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw will not start Wednesday for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second game of a two-game series at Comerica. Kershaw pitched on Friday and ordinarily would start again Wednesday.

"Looks like it was supposed to be (Hyun-Jin) Ryu and (Zack) Greinke," Ausmus said.

Something wrong with Sanchez, third straight game he's struck out almost no one and today the Rays of all teams are killing him. Not good at all.

k rate has been falling all year, swgstrk is crazy low, o contact is alarming too. Ive missed a lot of his starts, but tough to argue there isn't something wrong.

Doctor Detroit said:
At this rate, Price is gonna have a complete game on 60 pitches.
90% fastballs too. Hated to see Chef Rick get lit up on National TV, you could tell he was really pissed off.

No game to get pissed off at today.
Good day to book tee times for both the fans and the team. Miggy gave up golf because he sucked at it, he probably went to the archery range.

2 more at home, then 4 in KC to wrap up the first half.

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: Los Angeles Dodgers

Site: Comerica Park in Detroit

Records: Tigers, 48-37 (1st in AL Central); Dodgers, 51-40 (1st in NL West)

Schedule

Tuesday: RHP Justin Verlander (7-7, 4.71 ERA) vs. LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (9-4, 3.08 ERA), 7:08 p.m., FSD, MLB Network

Wednesday: RHP Max Scherzer (10-3, 3.47 ERA) vs. RHP Zack Greinke (11-4, 2.66 ERA), 1:08 p.m., FSD

Scouting the Dodgers: The Tigers and Dodgers were considered division favorites and World Series contenders when they squared off in early April in a two-game series at Dodger Stadium. Three months later, not much has changed. The Dodgers are in a dogfight with the San Francisco Giants for first place in the National League West. Like the Tigers, the Dodgers are 11 games over .500 as they head into their two-game series. The Dodgers are among the National League leaders in batting average (.261), runs scored (391) and OPS (.736) as well as team ERA (3.23) and strikeouts (770). The second game of the series should provide a stellar pitching matchup between Scherzer and Greinke, who leads the Dodgers in strikeouts with 119. The Tigers will not face Clayton Kershaw (1.85 ERA, 0.87 WHIP) or Josh Beckett (2.26 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) in the series, but Hyun-Jin Ryu has not been a slouch this season. Outfielder Yasiel Puig, a rising star in the majors, leads the Dodgers offensively. He is hitting .307 with 12 home runs, 50 RBIs and a .908 OPS. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .254 with 14 home runs and 56 RBIs, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez has knocked in 48 runs.
