Chalk up another for the power of the internets and those zany Brits!...The UK's NERC's campaign to elicit public participation in the naming of the ship has gone bloody bonkers.  The leading vote getter thus far for naming the new $300 m polar research vesse is "Boaty McBoatface": http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/03/21/471299842/meet-the-u-k-s-cutting-edge-research-vessel-boaty-mcboatface

Unfortunately, the Name the ship site seems to be experiencing technical difficulties now...

Other perhaps less-than-inspirational names suggested include Ice Ice Baby, Usain Boat and It's Bloody Cold Here.

:lmao:

Alison Robinson, NERC's director of corporate affairs, said in a statement that the council is "pleased that people are embracing the [naming] idea in a spirit of fun," but noted that the NERC will have the final say over the boat's name.
:sadbanana:

This reminds of when Austin asked its residents to name it's new Garbage Services Department, and the winner was "The Fred Durst Society of Humanities and Arts".  It won, but they didn't go with it.

WTF??? Jeez, they need to take the sticks out of their asses. Paint a big smiley face on the thing and roll with it imo.
Agreed. I would support killing a name like the funny I like big boats.

One of the main goals of this is always to help raise awareness, love,  and support for science. This is a cute, innocent, and amusing name that would capture public interest.

They'll likely go with a 'noble' name which will greatly appeal to those already in those circles and cause others to go back to ignoring scientific discovery and exploration. Sadly seems like they're dropping a golden opportunity.

British officials have decided to name the boat after David Attenborough.

As a consolation, they've agreed to keep the "Boaty McBoatface" name for the ship's unmanned submarine.

(But shouldn't that be Subby McSubface??)
