Sump pump installation question (1 Viewer)

Ben & Jerry's

Footballguy
I am about to install a new sump pump and basin in my crawlspace which is <36" tall.  After drilling holes in the basin, I want to wrap the basin with landscaping cloth or something similar to help prevent silt/mud from getting in the pit.

I was looking at natural burlap and wondered if that would be a good choice. The pores are larger than most landscaping fabric but may allow better flow.

Also considering fiberglass screen mesh.

Any thoughts or advice ?

Don't the ones in a crawlspace come with a bucket thing to put it in?   Make sure you didn't get a basement one that doesn't need protection.

I only saw ours going in and it just went into basically a five gallon bucket with holes punched in it.

Yes. I will be putting the pump in to a basin like this..https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-18-in-x-22-in-Sump-Pump-Basin-SF20/204733081

The plan was to drill holes all around the sides with a few in the bottom and wrap the outside with the landscaping fabric. I will then place in the pit and put 2-3" of gravel around the wrapped basin and put a lid on top.

I wouldn't...you'll get silt in the pit either way, and the fabric could impede water flow once it gets clogged up with silt.  Those pumps are more than rated to suck up silt.  Most are similar to sewage ejector pumps and can handle solids.  I have a very active french drain (ALWAYS water in the pit, and the pump runs after most rainfalls).  When I put in a new back-up pump a few years ago, I put in fresh gravel in the bottom, and set the pump on a brick to raise the intake up slightly.  There's minimal silt in there now, and it's been 6+ years.  If it ever got bad, I'd just dump a few buckets of water in, it'd stir up the silt, and then the pump would pump it out.

Dont they wrap root balls for plants in natural burlap and allow you to just plant them without unwrapping because the stuff just turns to mush?
