Bill Maher steps off the plantation, drops a nuke sized truth bomb on China, Twitter bots meltdown (1 Viewer)

“Scientists, who are generally pretty liberal, have been naming diseases after the places they came from for a very long time,” he said. “Zika is from the Zika Forest. Ebola is from the Ebola River. Hantavirus? The Hantan River. There’s the West Nile Virus, and Guinea Worm, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and of course the Spanish Flu.”

Viruses come from China like short stops come from the Dominican Republic.
Truth to power.

Chinese Twitter bots not happy.

I could care less what we call the virus but he's not wrong otherwise... we need to take a long hard look at animal agriculture everywhere including factory farming here. Not just for infectious disease but for what it's doing to the planet.

I usually don't care much about something like this but the only reason why this one bothers me some is because we know people are going out of their way to call it by different names based on hate.

Wow, I thought Maher was a liberal?  Pretty much destroys the liberal thought process.

I watched it twice and what he says is true even though it may step on some toes.

The forst thing quoted is wrong from the start.  The Spanish Flu didn’t necessarily originate in Spain. They dont know where.  It was named that because Spain was open to discussing how hard hit they were.  Because they were neutral during the war and not censoring information.

There were reasons naming viruses changed...so even things like swine flu wouldn’t have been called that anymore ( also called something other than what region it came from).

So i find this truth bomb to be pretty weak when it lies in the paragraph you quoted.

He is a classical  liberal. The new wave of the left is something different.

A letter to the editor in the LATimes?  Pretty much what I thought it would be...no prominent person has called it the Trump virus. (and anyone who does would be wrong calling it that as well).

I agree with that statement. I know he is not conservative but it seems of late he is disgusted with the dems as well. At times I feel the same way.  I won`t vote for Trump but not happy at all with the dem party either.

I remember when I first started hearing about this it was the Wuhan flu. All of a sudden that was not the correct term as China did not like being associated with it.  Nothing Maher says is false.

As of this morning there are 103,000 people dead and the number is climbing everyday, and there are some still worried about what name we call this by? Bizarre times we are in.

I don`t watch Maher but I can`t argue with his take.
I am sure there will be some who will argue with it, but those are the people he is talking about.  Some just love to be mad or outraged about anything.

Yeah, it sucks that Trump is taking this as an opportunity to take cheap swipes at China, but that is a different discussion.

I don`t know anyone who gives a dam what this is called. People only care about controlling this horrible pandemic.

As far as China goes  I know employees from suppliers who were working in China and evacuated China who claim the death toll and sickness toll there is 30-40% more than ever reported.  These are American employees who are not afraid to speak out.  A Chinese employee would never say a word out of fear.

I'm a liberal and I stand against pretty much against everything china does...they will be the source of most of the great viruses because of the conditions they create.

But don't kid yourself Trump is doing that for no other reason than to be a racist agitator

Agitate? Maybe but I don`t get the racist part.   German measles considered racist?

Where something originates is not racist.

Nah.  Biden was already beating him.  And with the daily reminders of his complete mismanagement of this crisis, no chance.

Unless they pull a Wisconsin.
hah!  This is great.  Back in the day, you all thought Hillary was beating him too.  :)

Wuhan Virus - acceptable

Chinese Virus - dumb

It would be like calling a Kansas City ###### (Blazing Saddles) an American ######.  There are specificities and context to using the Kansas City nomenclature....same as the virus.  What...if it happens again; we're going to call it Chinese Virus II?

There were some on the left complaining that there were no minorities in Trumps Covid panel, so yeah even during a global pandemic it’s nuts what people worry about.

Boring but possibly useful thread on economics of Trumpvirus. Econ 101 tells us that there are two kinds of macro shocks: demand shocks like 2008 financial crisis and supply shocks like 1979 oil crisis. Policy implications differ 1/

Maher is liberal on many issues and conservative on some. He is mostly very anti what he perceives as PC culture and is an entertainer versus a news person.

I tend to agree with him on the Wuhan virus naming issue.

If it keeps some moron from spraying Lysol on Koreans on the subway I’ll call it whatever you want but morons are going to be morons. It’s not like we don’t know this came from Asia. But really wtf cares what it’s name is.

Also agree that Trump Injected China into this solely as a political issue. My opinion to attempt remove blame for his tremendous screw ups and place anywhere else “hey everyone this is from China / no one saw this coming”. His simple mind works this way.

I’m less knowledgeable of these wet markets and why they are so important but they are a huge ####### problem that they need to fix it seems. If someone wants to educate me on the cultural importance or whatever of why they don’t clean these disgusting things up by all means.
