✦✦✦ Official 2015 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread &#10 (1 Viewer)

Just heard interesting bit of info, no team in history has played playoff game without leading RB & leading WR for the season. Let's shock the world!
Ben isn't a lock to play either. Might as well throw Landry Jones in the mix and go for the trifecta.
It is my hope that Vonn Miller takes care of Big Ben early. Sucks because I like Tomlin. Hope he sticks after this loss. Broncos up.

Odds of winning went down dramatically. No AB, no Bell, no DWill, and Ben with an ailing throwing arm. Defense has to bring tons of pressure on Manning and score a defensive TD or two for any chance of winning.

Wheaton & Bryant start, DHB and Coates alternate in. Not sure who will be returning punts.
Can DHB return punts?
Wheaton will be handling punts.
Jordan Todman could return punts or kickoffs if needed.

About the only thing the Steelers have going for them this game is Manning's playoff choke history.
And the fact that Manning has no arm strength left. An injured Ben can probably still throw it harder than Manning at this point in their careers. The game will be close.

Welp we now gotta get through Denver and N.E. I could potentially see a win tomorrow but I have absolutely no clue how we can stop the Patriots offense. I'm almost rooting for Denver tomorrow just so they may be able to knock off the evil patriots.

Bite your tongue, Fred! If we can pull off a miracle and beat the Bronocos at mile high as banged up as we are then I think the Steelers are a team of Destiny. Get AB and Dwill and back and let's see who wins the shootout!

Of course there is still a little matter of the game tomorrow.

Provided AB can come back and Roethlisberger doesn't further injure his shoulder, I'd like our chances in NE next week a lot better than I like our chances tomorrow.

Well yeah all bets are off if AB comes back.

You would think, but against NE it's not just about personnel. They are in our heads. Heck, I think they are in the heads of the whole league. Everyone goes to Foxboro and leaves their brains on the bus. To wit, KCs inexplicable clock management today.

Very little chance we beat the Broncos and about half that chance we get by the Pats at home. I'm not saying root for the Broncos, just being realistic and recalling history.

the defense will have to play their best game of the year to have a chance

In four home starts this season, Manning has thrown one touchdown pass and eight interceptions.

If Manning has been that bad at home, do they really need to play their best game of the year to win? Just let Manning make a couple killer mistakes with his lollipop throws. Everyone and their mother is picking the Broncos (including most of you). I'm looking forward to this game

I wish I shared your optimism. This is the least confident I've been heading into a playoff game that I can remember.
If the Steelers win, I'll be bumping a lot of posts in this thread tomorrow. If they lose, I'll have my tail between my legs :bag:
Why? Normally, I'd be right there with you. I'd pay a significant amount of money to be horribly wrong about this. No reason for you not to fly the flag. I just have a sinking feeling that things are going to go swiftly and irrevocably south tomorrow. I pray that doesn't happen, but no mea culpas necessary if it does.

The reason I'm optimistic is because I think our front 7 will get pressure on Manning. Manning is a shell of what he used to be. He doesn't have the arm strength to overcome his immobility. I hope the game plan for the Steelers is to just dink and dunk and not the turn the ball over. Let the Broncos make a mistake or two. Don't try to force anything.

And I was definitely less confident going against N.E. in 2004 or Denver in 1998.

I don't think a Steelers win is all that improbable. Of course it would be nice if we had AB and DeAngelo and a healthy Ben, but I don't think we necessarily need them to win this game. And you have to think the Steelers are already in their heads after that last one. With the surprising performance by the running game last week and the "next man up" turning up big all season, now it's Sammie Coates' turn.
I would feel a little better if the Broncos hadn't completely shut down the running game in the previous game. However I do agree with those saying to go in conservatively and see if we can force Manning to make mistakes.

That being said I would go deep at least once in the first possession just to give the Broncos defense to think about.

What are your keys to Steelers win today?

Mine:

1. Protect Ben no matter what.

2. Great Steelers secondary play. Prevent big Denver pass plays.

3. DHB has to play great today for the Steelers. If he plays strong, Denver won't be able to stop the Steelers offense today. If DHB goes off even just once, then all of a sudden so will Miller, Bryant, and Wheaton. When they all get going then that will open run game. But it all starts with Darrius Heyward-Bey establishing himself first early in the game as a legitimate threat.

4. Get after the Denver qb to disrupt timing and force errant throws. I am not sure Manning finishes this game today. When Manning is pulled from game, keep after Osweiller.

Yes,I agree GB. Establishing DHB early as a legit deep threat can set everything else up nicely.

No particular reason for this team to fear NE...certified pats homer with steelers vs seahawks in the postseason contest. That said, I think Elway is a ##### nozzle and will be waiving a terrible towel today.

You did this before week one as well. :lmao: You're one of my favorite N.E posters but why would you be worried about the Steelers?

Just saw on the ESPN ticker that this is the only time in the Super Bowl Era that any team has gone into a playoff game with both their leading rusher and leading receiver inactive. There is literally no precedent for this, and that's not even factoring Ben's shoulder into the mix. Nor the fact that AB is a little bit more than the "team's leading receiver."

We need some guys to play out of their minds today.

Yes we do. Everybody needs to ratchet up their play a notch to make up for lack of AB & DW, and to keep Big Ben upright and looking down field. Here we go! The standard is the standard.

If you will. That's January football and we're excited about the opportunity we have today.

That's right, EG. I like the Steelers chances today in a close one.

I don't like the fact that all the road teams won last week and so far this week all of the home teams have won. Hopefully the Steelers will buck that trend.

Tough loss but just not as bothered by this loss as with most years. I said they were playing with house money and for most of the game they were still winning without a top 3 WR and a top 5 running back in the starting lineup. Yeah Toussaint fumble cost us the game but blaming a 4th stringer in the playoffs just doesn't seem fair. Defense played really strong and the wide receivers more than set up.

My only strong negative on the game was that I thought Tomlin should have tried more field goals instead of punting. I think we could have trusted Boswell on some of those 50+ field goals in Denver of all places

Frankly the only thing that pisses me off is having to deal with the media jerking off to Brady vs Manning part 230. :wall:

Tough loss to DEN - basically came down to that one turnover.

It was a good season, especially considering all their injuries on offence (Pouncey, Beachum, LeVeon, and recently DeAngelo and AB). They need continue rebuilding the young defense focusing on the secondary. The offense will be one of the best again next year and hopefully having Bell back will help their efficiency in the Red Zone.

Couple quick hits. I thought Haley called a great game. Tomlin continues to make baffling choices. Never even close to the level of firing-worthy, IMO, but cringeworthy on a weekly basis. It's maddening. Coates looked good for a young guy, Bryant needs to work on his concentration but man, what a weapon. Hope he doesn't hit the weed too hard in the off-season. Defense looked good, solid enough to win.

I call this a successful season. Ben is good for one more ring if we get some breaks from the injury Gods. With the progress of our defense, next year could be the one. We need one if not two safeties.

The thing here with Tomlin is these are the same mistakes since he started coaching the Steelers. He has and will never evolve or learn from his mistakes. The only thing they can do is keep surrounding him with more talent cause he will never win unless talent can cover for his blunders. Dates back to his SB win also.
