Sources say Bell will be suspended for the first three games of the 2015 season, not two. Bell is appealing the suspension.

Just ridiculous. Blount whose had several embarrassing incidents on the field gets one game, Ray Rice's initial ban was 2 games and Bell gets three. Sounds on par for Goodell.

3 games + 1 additional game check is ridiculous but just what you come to expect from the NFL. They just can't seem to figure out appropriate responses when it comes to suspensions.

On the other hand hopefully Bell learns from it and this is the one and only time he gets himself in trouble.

It is going to suck not having Bell for almost 20% of the season.

He'll likely win the appeal. Wager he'll miss two game and lose a third game check.

It's still "par for the Goodell course" though, yes.

Eight-time Pro Bowler Troy Polamalu informed the Steelers of his retirement Wednesday, according to the Herald-Standard. Polamalu spent all 12 of his seasons with Pittsburgh.
From ESPN. This was kind of inevitable but still sucks. So now a secondary that is shaky at best gets even weaker :kicksrock:

Hey but that is okay they will just draft another linebacker

A high class person, player, and teammate who played the game with passion and intensity and will be sorely missed.

only jersey I own and I don't wear jerseys
I had a Lambert as a kid, but I outgrew/lost it.

These days, I have a Bettis, a Ward, a Polamalu, and a Roethlisberger. Three of the four thus far have retired as Steelers, meaning I can still wear the jerseys on (rare) occasion with pride. The #7 was a rough go there for a while with the rape charges, that sat in the closet for a couple of years. Hopefully he'll retire a Steeler too and Ward will get into the HOF and I'll have 4 career Steelers (I know Bettis wasn't, but close enough) in Canton's jerseys.

Sad day for Steelers fans but would have been a lot tougher had he played his final season with another team.
I did NOT want to see him in a Titans jersey.
Truth be told this is the way it should go. I think it would have been a lot tougher watching old Troy play, even it if was with the Steelers this coming year. Walk away with your health and go be with your family.

While I'm sad to see him go, and really glad he decided to retire a Steeler, I guess I'll be the "blasphemer": I think it could(not "will", but "could") wind up as "addition by subtraction" in regards to the secondary. Troy just couldn't cover anymore. Last year showed that quite clearly to me. He could still break down on runs, but the change of direction and burst in coverage just weren't where they used to be. Not 100% his fault, since the Steelers were never going to bench him outright, but teams went after him more in coverage in 2014. Unlike in the past where he was routinely avoided.

Not saying anyone currently on the roster can remotely carry his jock, but with him retiring now they can move on fully and see what they really have in Thomas/et al. Probably have to adjust the scheme some too, which is overdue. LeBeau built a lot of what they did around Troy, with good reason obviously, but the last couple of years it just wasn't working anymore because, well, age is a mutha'.

Regardless, Troy's a dead nuts lock first-ballot HOFer and I'm glad that I got to see him play. He was awesome and will be missed. End of an era.

Agree. He just didn't have it any more and I still would've felt weird seeing him continue down the hill, even somewhere else. Glad he chose to go the route he went.

I was sitting in a seat by the corner of the endzone where he ended his zig-zagging pick-6 to seal the game against the Ravens in the 2009 AFC CG. It was about 12 degrees, and all of or adrenaline that was keeping us warm was gone because the game was just too close with too many dropped (Limas Sweed) opportunities. It was pretty quiet by normal standards, 50k (or whatever) people just standing nervously as the Ravens tried to move down the field in the closing minutes. Freezing our asses off, uptight and then Flacco dropped back, Troy eyeballed it the whole time, leapt and weaved his towards us after plucking that thing from the air.

We just collectively lost our damn minds. It was like we all felt like we just survived something together. All of a sudden, we weren't cold anymore and it was time to get lit. Awesome experience and may never be topped, sporting event-wise.

Same here.

My aunt works for children's hospital. She said on multiple occasions, Troy would hair randomly show up. No media. Not through the PR department or a foundation. Just Troy being randomly found bedside in the cancer ward.

If the steelers weren't using the cap space this year (and I doubt they will this late in the game) I just do not see why they were forcing this decision. He isn't the all-pro, but unless there's an undisclosed significant injury, he would have been useful still imo, especially with more youth on that side of the ball and a new DC.

Would you guys rather...

  • sit tight and take a (S Landon Collins, LB Bud Dupree, CB Jalen Collens, CB Marcus Peters) type of first round slotted talent.
  • and pair it with a (FS Damarious Randell, CB PJ Williams, FS Deron Smith, LB Hau'oli Kikaha) type of slotted second round talent.
  • Or trade that second round pick to trade up and take CB Trae Waynes in the first?

This team's never given me the sense that they like to trade up for a need. They trust their player evaluation guys, and sit still and make good choices, unless there's a special talent to reach up for (irrespective of position). And they're pretty good at it. I'd want them to keep on keepin' on.

We almost never trade up in the early rounds, I admit. But the question is what do YOU prefer?

We notably traded up for Polamalu when Lethon Flowers was horrendous and we let him walk.

Troy didnt even end up starting that season (Alexander, Logan) and neither did 2nd year man Chris Hope.

In 2004 they both started and we went to the AFCC game.

I gotcha. I'm more a follower than a fanatic, but as a guy who appreciates the Steeler way, I like to see them sit tight and let the draft come to them. Although if a chance presents itself to move up without overpaying to nab Shaq Thompson somehow, that's a guy I could envision being a real terror in the Polamalu mold. But I don't think that's in the cards.

Moving up the 10-12 picks to get Waynes would be steep. I say stay put and take the best CB or OLB/DE available at 22.

In earth shattering news: Steelers sign an Aussie punter to push current Aussie punter, Brad Wing.

Burt Lauten @SteelersPRBurt
The @steelers have signed punter Jordan Berry (Eastern Kentucky) to their offseason roster.

A highlight.
An article about Australian kicking school that's putting several punters into college and pros.

Bored and waiting for contractor.

Extremely over-rated player in my opinion (consider him the DeAngelo Hall of the AFC) but yeah this isn't what the secondary needs right now with Troy retiring.

Since the Steelers don't think drafting the secondary is important, they better draft some guys with incredible pass rush abilities because if not QB's are going to throw for 400 yards on us so damn easily :sadbanana:

It really looks like we have to expect Ben and the offense to put up at least 30 points a game to have any chance of winning this year.

Ike Taylor has announced his retirement
It was time. No doubt.

Thank you for the the many years of service Ike.

12 years, as a 4th round pick. His first year starting coincided with our return to Super Bowl prominence.

If he could catch... his legacy and accolades would have been way more significant.

At one time he was one of the better corners in the league. The Steelers normally matched him against the opponents #1 wideout and Ike almost always came through. The biggest knock on Ike is that he couldn't catch a cold.

He had been on a steady decline since 2011 though and really should have retired a few seasons ago.

Glad he finally decided to hang it up...

Peters and Johnson are the two among those listed that are first round talents. I don't think Peters is likely on their board, even though on tape, he's the best cover corner on this draft, better even than Waynes. I think Johnson is the most likely selection if Ray, Gregory, Fowler, Beasley, and Dupree are all taken in the top 21, as most mocks seem to think they will be.

PJ Williams may be off their board too now, but I'd look at any of those other guys from round 2 on.

If he can actually do this consistently they might have a guy who can stick around a while. http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/nfl-pittsburgh-steelers-news/2015/4/16/8425483/newly-acquired-pittsburgh-steelers-punter-jordan-berry-shows-off-his

Rob Rang and Daniel Jeremiah have Byron Jones ahead of Kevin Johnson. Key though probably is that the Steelers have visited with Johnson but not Jones.

They didn't until he broke the long jump record, though. That worries me.

Byron Jones

NFL.com pre-combine : ranked 25th among CBs. Sentiment was that he's not fast or quick enough to play CB in the NFL and needed to move to S. Day 3 pick.

NFL.com post-combine : ranked 11th among CBs. Sentiment is that he has aedequate speed to play NFL CB. 1st or 2nd round pick.

NFLDraftScout/CBS pre-combine : ranked 31st among CBs. 7th round grade.

NFLDraftScout/CBS post-combine : ranked 3rd among CBs. 1st round grade.

So CBS MIGHT just be overreacting to a huge broad jump. I wouldn't touch Jones in round 1.

Mayock has him as the 5th best CB. I'd trust these guys who do it for a living know not to overreact to combine numbers and instead did a Mayock and "went back to study more tape" after a great combine performance. Just watched Path to the Draft and Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis were discussing possibilities for the Lions (23) and they threw Jones into the mix. I'd call it a reach there but he's certainly in the discussion for a late first/early second round pick.
