10 Team Playoff (1 Viewer)

How many teams should be allowed to participate in the playoffs in a ten team league. Our league defaulted to 4 teams, but a few members want it to be more. What are other leagues doing?

Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I think more than half the teams making the playoffs is overkill. At that stage, what's the point of the regular season?

I can see the argument being that teams lose interest because they're out of the running for the playoffs too early, but IMO the better solution is to reserve some % of the pot for things like weekly high score, quarterly best team performance, etc. Expanding the playoffs just increases the randomness of outcomes ... not generally something I'm a fan of.

We do 7. Week 14 1st seed gets a bye, single elimination through week 16. Each win is worth something with the finals payoffs for winner and runner-up being pretty substantial. There are weekly awards throughout the season and standings bonuses at the halfway point too. It's a real active league and transactions add to the kitty. .

Agree on all of this. We have 4 teams making the playoffs in our 12 team league, and also pay out the Total Points Champion after week 17. I don't ever agree with having more than half the teams in the playoffs, and most of the time, half is too much as well. Reward regular season performance.

I do 6 in the 10-team league I run, but that's only cause it's a casual league of all friends, and I want it to be a little more fun. I'm in another 10 team league of all friends where 8 make it, and I hate it.

My ideal is in a 10-team league, 4 teams make the playoffs, which would be weeks 13-16, and would consist of two-week matchups.

Agreed on the 2 week matchups. I played an ESPN league sometime back in the mid 2000s, and this one thing really stuck with me. They use week 17, which is pretty silly, but I love the 2 week combo matchups method. We've been doing so in my re-draft since 2005 or so. 12 week regular season, 4 teams make the playoffs, with a cumulative matchup weeks 13-14, and a cumulative championship weeks 15-16. Really helps fend off that one bad stinker week during the playoffs costing your championship caliber team a shot at the title.

Depends on the size of the league. 10 team leagues I say 4 teams. Maybe 6. 12 teams I would say no more than 6

I agree, weekly winnings (highest score of the week wins $10) keeps interest. Meanwhile the pot still stays pretty big for the championship.

Even if you're team is awful you have the chance to win some or all of your entrance fees back during the first 13 weeks of the season

For years, I was in a 12 team league that had 8 make the playoffs. When we changed to 10 teams, it seemed logical to go with 6 teams in the playoffs.
