100 years ago today Franz Ferdinand was assassinated (1 Viewer)

World war 1 is almost a forgotten war because of the focus made on ww2. In many ways it was a more gruesome war with the introduction of trench warfare and mustard gas. Though millions more died during ww2.

Franz Ferdinand, who was the nephew of the Austro-Hungarian emperor, was killed by a group called the Black Hand. And because they were a Serbian nationalist society, the empire declared war on Serbia. Then Russia, which was bound by a treaty, was forced to mobilize, which meant that Germany had to declare war on Russia. Then France declared war on Germany, and that was World War I. Because the emperor's nephew was killed.

I'm not a big fan of Bill Maher, but I caught a couple of minutes of "Real Time" last night and he made a good point about WWI being the only war that doesn't have a real cause/reason that you can sum up in a few words. Civil War (slavery), Revolutionary War (independence from England), WWII (Hitler), even Vietnam (spread of communism/Russia)...

WWI was like a bar fight that your short buddy starts because he feels inferior, but you have to back him because he's your buddy...

A couple of those short summaries are incomplete though.

I get that he's trying to be funny, but all those wars were more complicated than he makes to be.

Of course they are. A 2 word summary of any event is going to be incomplete. I wouldn't say any of them are out and out "wrong" though. The point is that you can't really pinpoint a "reason" for WWI, where most other wars it is relatively easy.

I've heard the opinion that at some point in the future, WWs 1& 2 may be considered two halves of the same war, because many of the enemy combatants remained the same, but the sides needed a generation to refill their armies. Personally, I can see it because Hitler took power at least in part because Germany had lots of debt because of having to pay the victors from the first war.

WW1, it's carnage, the impact it had on the psyche of Europe and the Treaty of Versailles had a huge role in allowing fascism to take hold. I wouldn't say they were the same war though. One was a war over which competing, but similar old world empires would survive into the new world. WW2 was about what the new world would look like. Was it democracy or fascism that would lead the way into the future? Was it persons all freedom or a totalitarian state that would dominate the future?

And Germany was made to feel inferior which opened up the path for a charismatic nationalist to fill the Void by saying theyre the master race. The end of WW1 and the punitive damages placed on Germany were at least partially to blame for Hitlers rise.

Like Nam and even the Korean War to a degree, WWI was a war of attrition. The Allies "won", but the resulting consequences were small compare to WWII. WWII is "sexy" because you had an empire secretly re-tool their military while committing genocide in near secrecy throughout Europe. You had true charismatic leaders on both sides. Plus, in the end, there was a totality of the destruction of the Nazi party and German state as it was at the time.

Yeah, WWI is much more interesting from a political perspective than WWII.

A lot of the blame for the scale of WWI and then WWII falls right in France's lap.

Not to mention the newer technology makes it seem more interesting but ww1 was more brutal but less flashy.

And ww2 was truly global

And the Depression.

If you haven't read the story on his assassination you should. It's an incredible story and amazing that it actually happened.

Now we just go to war for oil and to make people rich people more money.

The Depression was even worse in Germany because they were carrying the burden for WW1. They opted to print mass amounts of money which led to hyperinflation and a depression that dwarfed the one we saw in America.

Those were mentioned by Maher as well. Definitely not the first time in history that greed has been a major cause though...

We're still living in a Post-WW1 world.

Europe was transformed, the end of democracy, the rise and fall of fascism and communism, and the modern Middle East, all happened because of one bullet.

Fact is the assassins missed FF and his wife the first time, but some guards were injured. FF and his wife, who had escaped the attack, insisted on visiting the guards in the hospital, they were warned not to go out but they wanted to show respect for the guards. It was on their way back that one of teh assassins who had escaped detection was simply in their path by chance, the driver compounded things by stopping in the road.

All of the rest of the 20th century and the start of the current one were shaped by that series of events.

And we're still living in it.

WW1 was going to happen. If it wasn't the FF assassination, it would have been something else. All the pieces were in place.

You had 19th century minds fighting with 20th century technologies. Brutal carnage and mayhem followed.

There were the same number of soldiers killed in the Iraq and Afghan Wars killed in single battles in a single afternoon.

On the eve of the centennial, Bosnian Serbs unveiled a statue to Gavrilo Princip, the archduke's killer, who is considered a Serbian hero and freedom-fighter
Jesus. ####### Serbs
Easy their buddy, we aren't all world war starting #######s

It reads like the Keystone Cops meet Laurel & Hardy to try and assassinate Charlie Chaplan if I remember correctly.

Nobody had to do anything. They could have all let Serbia slug it out like they had in 1908-12 - and in the 1990's - without much intervention.

Germany/Prussia and Russia were actually allied for decades, it was Wilhelm who blew up that agreement around the turn of the century.

Wilhelm might be ahead of Hitler and Stalin in terms of being the biggest villain of the last 2 centuries, so much horror, including Hitler and Stalin happened because of his awful, purposeful decisions.

And I'll add one other thing. It's worse than that, because Russia, Germany and England were all led by 1st cousins who were friends, and their grandmother, Victoria, was alive.

WW2 was totally a result of WW1. Not only were the wars connected, but Hitler and Stalin would never have been in power and naziism and communism would not have come to be as governments if not for WW1.

Could be but the way it happened is the way it happened.

I don't know if it was a simple as "greed." People forget the power of nationalism and the state as the symbol of populist ethnic pride.

In his big speech after the annexation of Crimea Putin just cited the US's recognition of Kosovo as one of its stated reasons for taking Crimea. This stuff still goes on.

Right, which through European history was very common. Families fighting each other and vying for territory or a crown. The problem was none of them understood the power of the new technology and all sides were arrogant about how quickly/easily the war would be win. In the end, it brought the downfall of their entire system that had been cultivated since the fall of the Roman Empire.

No doubt. Nationalism was really the driving force behind WW1.

dan Carlin's podcast is covering WWI, and it is great. didn't know the circumstances around the assassination and was fascinated by the story.

I saw your point(s), I was just adding to it, I hope. I don't think it was greed, and I agree it was complex, but there were some straightforward reasons and causes, starting with Wilhelm, nationalism and ethnicity/religion.

I believe they were bound by treaty, but I would have to look it up
