FBI finds largest cache of "finished explosive devices" in FBI history (1 Viewer)

Glad they got this guy, too early perhaps, rather than too late like the mass killer in New Orleans.

Police found "a stockpile of more than 150 homemade improvised explosive devices" that were assessed to be pipe bombs, according to prosecutors. They said some of the pipe bombs were labeled "lethal" and "preloaded into an apparent wearable vest."

"Most of the devices were allegedly found in a detached garage, while others were found in a backpack in a bedroom "completely unsecured." Prosecutors said Spafford also "acknowledged to keeping a jar in his freezer of HMTD, an explosive material that is so unstable it can be exploded merely as a result of friction of temperature changes." Investigators found the jar stored next to food items and labeled "dangerous" and "do not touch," prosecutors said."

"the investigation began in early 2023 after Spafford's neighbor told authorities that Spafford was stockpiling weapons and had lost three fingers on his right hand."

"The neighbor also told authorities that Spafford was using photos of President Biden for target practice at a local shooting range. The neighbor said Spafford believed that "political assassinations should be brought back" and that "missing children in the news had been taken by the federal government to be trained as school shooters." After President-elect Donald Trump was nearly assassinated in July at a Pennsylvania rally, Spafford allegedly told his neighbor that "he hoped the shooter doesn't miss Kamala," prosecutors said."

Woah, that's right across the river from me. And it's the first I've heard of it too.

Lots of crazy people out there.
Indoctrination.
Into what?
It doesn't much matter. At the end of the day the result and goal is mass casualties. We focus way too much on kids and their computer use. I am much more worried about these lonely, angry men that seem to be getting sucked into one hateful online group or another - weather it is religious fundamentalism or white supremacy or politics I don't care, they all seem to produce these types of end results.

Well the wonderful news for all of us is he was released on $25K bond a few days ago. So he's out here with us until they put him on trial. And that was after he said he was anti-govt and basically planning an attack. So happy our judicial system and prosecutors are protecting us. :bored:

Almost literally with me. Wife and daughter were over there Sunday for a baby shower. Fortunately, he has a tracker and is confined to his mom's house and work. Not sure who but employer is, if he's not self employed, but if I was his boss I'd let him "work" from home.

I've read that three times now... Your wife and daughter went to a baby shower at this guy's house?

Where do you get your news from? I'm just wondering because they're lying to you and I figure you'd want to know.
He's still in custody. The judge said initially that DOJ hadn't submitted enough reason to keep him incarcerated, the DOJ asked if they could submit more information, the judge said yes, the DOJ did, and he's still in jail.

His release poses an extreme danger to those he lives with, the general community, and also the pretrial officers who will be tasked with periodically inspecting his residence for firearms including dangerous and unstable explosives.” The stay of release order was granted by a federal judge on Monday.

over there, as in "across the river from me" in the same area/county as the guy.

He's still in custody and has now pleaded not guilty.

"Rebecca Gantt, a federal prosecutor, told a judge that authorities are still analyzing evidence from the FBI’s seizure of approximately 150 pipe bombs and other homemade devices at Spafford’s home in Isle of Wight County, which is northwest of Norfolk. Most of the explosives were detonated on Spafford’s property, requiring soil analyses, while some devices were taken to a lab for examination, Gantt said. She added that investigators were still going through Spafford’s electronic devices, including a phone with 500,000 images on it, among other evidence."

The FBI found the largest number of bombs they've ever found.

Well that’s good but what really concerns me is the fact that the investigation started in 2023 when his neighbor called police about weapon stockpiling and blowing some fingers off. The arrest came at least a year later on December 17th, 2024.

Seems like we seem to know about a lot of these shooters and terrorists but don’t act or in this case take a long time to act. We just got lucky that this guy was more about stockpiling than acting. I like my liberties but honestly, I’d much rather err on the side of caution and arrest people earlier. I mean this guy already blew his fingers off so I’m sure we could have found enough evidence under a year, we didn’t need to wait until he had the most amount of explosives the FBI has ever found. The Guinness record for explosives wasn’t important enough to break.
