1st pick in a keeper league (1 Viewer)

Im in a 15 player, 10 team keeper league. So basically all the good players are gone. I was all set to take David Price with the first pick until I noticed Yovani Gallardo & James Shields were not kept. Who should I take? There are no salaries and you can basically keep a guy forever.

I'd take Price out of those three, but I'd rather pick a bat if there are any available options.

Highest rated bats available are Jeter, SDrew, Damon, and Pence. So like I said basically all the good players are gone. Matt Weiters might be available if hes listed on Yahoo but I think he could slip especially if he starts the season in the minors.

If you're making a run this year, Drew, Pence or Price are the top three depending on positional needs.

If you can afford to hold him, Wieters is probably the long term pick.

Weiters is already on Yahoo and they actually rank him 107th. He's not gonna slip by in any Yahoo draft.

In this draft he might. Jay Bruce was listed on Yahoo last year and wasnt drafted. I scooped him up as a FA. I have Martinez at C so Im ok for now there. Im desperate at pitcher and SS.

If you really need a SS, Stephen Drew is probably top five at his position

Oh yeah. I thought he was talking JD until I just re-read that post. :hophead:

If you're structured like a dynasty FF league and can just hold on to your best 15 players forever, take Wieters. Hitters are more reliable than pitchers in the long run. Especially when you factor in position, Wieters is the best hitting prospect to come along in a while.

If you need someone who will help you the most this year, take Drew, Pence, or Shields.

actually, if you are looking to make a run this year then go with shields or gallardo. both will be bigger factors than price this year. Price might now even start the year in the rotation and even if he does, there will a lot more ups and downs than the other two.

Id like to win this year but I doubt any of these guys will put me over the top. There are some pretty stacked teams and I just took this team over last year by making sure I got most of the young studs. I was focusing on competing next year. BTW this is a stupid league in that I have the first pick in every round but I guess I wont complain about that too much. Here's my keepers:Víctor Martínez (Cle - C,1B) Justin Morneau (Min - 1B) Brandon Phillips (Cin - 2B) Chris Davis (Tex - 1B,3B) Alfonso Soriano (ChC - LF,CF) Matt Kemp (LAD - CF,RF) Carlos Quentin (CWS - LF,RF) Shane Victorino (Phi - CF,RF) Jay Bruce (Cin - LF,CF,RF) Johnny Cueto (Cin - SP) Zack Greinke (KC - SP,RP) Cole Hamels (Phi - SP) Clayton Kershaw (LAD - SP) Justin Verlander (Det - SP) Max Scherzer (Ari - SP,RP)

damn you have some nice players and definitely are set up nice for the future. I wouldnt be too worried about this team. Kershaw might have more upsiade than Price, but it is very close. These are 2 of the best pitchers to come out in a long time. You have a nice assortment of young guys in C Davis, Kemp, Quentin, Bruce, Cueto Greinke and Kershaw. Verlander should bounce back, Victorino is perenially underrated, but is very solid. Sherzer is also a young stud prospect. Add in some guys like Morneau, Soriano, Phillips and Hamels who are already established stars....and i really like this team. You need a catcher for the future. Maybe Wieters is the pick. Some scouts think he'll be up within a month or two of the season and he has more upside than any catcher in the league. Yes, this includes Mauer, McCann Soto and Martin. I honestly think that if he doesnt stumble out of the gates when he gets called up, then he COULD possibly be the #1 ranked catchergonig into next years drafts/auctions.eta: We were talking about Shields and Gallardo abovve. Gallardo has more upside, but SHields will be a steadier option. He has turned into a workhorse. You will get 200 innings, 3.50 era, solid whip, 180ks, and 14-16 wins. He isnt going to strikeout a batter per inning. Gallardo on the other hand has more upside and his stuff is live. I see over 200k's if he throws enough innings, but that probably wont happen. His ERA his rookie season was something like 3.67, which is good, but doesnt tell the whole story. He got torched in one game and had 11 earned runs because his dumb ### manager left him in to take the beating. Anyone that knows squat about young pitchers knows that can kill confidence. Anyways, if it werent for that start his era his rookie season would have been around 2.70. Nasty stuff for a rook. He is a highly composed pitcher for a 22 year old.

I decided to go with Stephen Drew and hope one of Shields, Gallardo, Price, or Wieters drops (I doubt any of the pitchers drop)

You added a good young SS to a team that already has youth at the SP position. Even though it would have been nice to add a Yovani Gallardo or David Price to that staff you already have, putting a quality starting SS was the right move. Had you taken Gallardo or Price or even Shields, your dropoff from Drew to ? is probably considerable, especially in a keeper league.

For me........this would have been tough. My choices would have been between Gallardo or Drew..........and probably would have leaned towards the SP. But the bottom line is that you added a good young SS to your squad.

Thanks man. I got Drew in the 1st, and just like I expected all 3 of those pitchers were gone in the 2nd so I took Wieters, grabbed Matt Cain in the 3rd

Who were the 9 keepers selected between your picks of Drew and Wieters?
15 keepers and they appear in post #13
:bag: Isn't this a draft where you selected Drew with the first pick, and miraculously Wieters with your 2nd?Who was drafted between those picks?

As you can see I did a complete overhaul of the pitching staff. Traded Lee for Hamels, Hart for Verlander. Picked up Cueto, Bruce, Quentin, Scherzer, and Davis during the year as FAs. Traded Sanchez for Kershaw, and drafted Kemp & Grienke last yr.
