2008 Defensive ROY is... (1 Viewer)

I'll take Curtis Lofton

LB's have a great history with the award. MLB's get a ton of action. He's in a great situation in ATL...

Considering the typical learning curve for DT's I'll not even consider Dorsey and Ellis, although they could very well prove to be the best defensive players from this class.

Derrick Harvey with the Jags looks like a good bet.

Jerod Mayo has easily been the most impressive rookie, so I'll take him.

I also think Brandon Flowers is going to have a solid year.

I agree with the Mayo camp. I think he is a heavy favorite to win DROY. Great talent, on a great team and ideal situation to put up numbers.

Jerod Mayo will be tough to beat due to the hype machine in New England, but I think Chris Long outperforms all D rookies by a decent margin...it may not translate in the borderline personality/hype contests that are known as the NFL awards, but who knows at this point.

As for Mayo easily being the most impressive, come on now, talk to me in week 6...

As a Pats fan, I cant stand behind the Mayo pick. Dont get me wrong, I think he'll be an impact player, but his team is too good. And he may not be an every down player. There will be plenty of other players on that team making plays. He wont accumulate thru the roof tackle or sack #s. Not many backers in a 3-4 do. The huge D #s typically come out of guys in a 4-3. And that New England O led the league in time of possession last year, and they'll be near the top again this year, meaning Mayo will be on the field alot less than other candidates.

The D-ROY is gonna come off a mediocre team like Willis' Niners or Ryan's Texans. The guy will either put up a big sack or tackle total, and imo, Long is gonna do both for the Rams. He'll be on the field every snap of every play he has a breath of air in his lungs. And name me the other guy on that Rams' D that's gonna offer up alot of help to Long. There you go. Chris Long. D-ROY. That kid is gonna be tenacious straight out of the gate.

I'm going straight homer and taking Laurence Jackson. Word is that he's on the verge of overtaking Tapp on the depth chart for more reps in the DE rotation. And with Kerney and his sack monster totals on the other side and what should be a top 5 D behind him he could sneak in some impressive stats. I'm still a little miffed that Lofa lost out to Merriman 3 years ago so I'm hoping that the next great USC defender can pull it out for the Hawks.

Lofton or Rivers... both will have a chance to load up on tackles when their teams are blown out.

Sleeper, Jason Jones from Tenn.

For the guys saying Harvey. Aren't you concerned that he is not signed yet? Missing camp for a rookie is a big deal.
:wall: It's an especially big deal since he is a defensive end and that is the position with the steepest learning curve on the defense.
Back in 2001 Justin Smith didn't sign until Sept. 8, missing camp, every preseason game, and the first regular season game and then had a really good season considering that with 53 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions. He didn't win the award but it shows a rookie DE can have a good season when missing camp. I'll take Long

Rivers. He'll rack up the tackle stats on that defense, and if he gets a few turnovers, should get enough pub to take it.

I would feel pretty confident in saying that he is the outlier.

Im going to go a different route and go DB. While they dont usually win the award its not out of the question.

This year I took 2 of the top 3 candidates on my team and I feel K. Phillips- S- NYG has a strong shot. I took C. Long too so I feel he is a solid option #2. Lofton is still available as a FA but no room for him.

Thats my top 3 candidates.

Since I don't play in any IDP leagues I haven't followed the rookie defenders very closely but I won't let that stop me from having an opinion.

I'll throw out a homer pick in Kenny Phillips.

Safety is a hard position to adjust to from college to the pros but Phillips has done nothing but impress in camp and is already taking first team snaps.

He is showing an understanding for the position by being in the right spot, great instincts such as sniffing out an end around in he first pre-season game and soft hands for the occasional pick. It is as clear as it can be this early in his career that he dropped in the draft due to unfair comparisons to former all-pro Miami safeties and his making up for defensive inequities on his team in his last year in college.

Considering the defensive front that he gets to play behind, I think this kid is going to be a star.

Pure homer pick.

Thats funny. Picked him right before you. He is getting little love this pre season and it let me get him vey last pick in my draft.

Bif fan of Phillips :moneybag: , but this award is dominated by LBs.

Tough one. Looks like it's between Chris Long and Rivers, and since I think the Rams will be worse than the Bengals and will have the D on the field more often, I'll go with Long. I for one think this kid is going to be very good from the outset.

A DB hasn't won the award since Charles Woodsen ages ago. Before him maybe Deion won it? Anyway, certainly the exception. It always goes to someone with lots of tackles and/or sacks.

Mayo could be the man, just depends on his playing time. Outside of him, I'd agree Rivers is a good candidate as he could rack of tackles in the Cincy D.

I think Dizon is going to put up alot of tackles this year from the MLB spot in Detroit. That D will be on the field a ton.

I like what you are saying. I am not hung up on the 3-4, 4-3 since as recent as last year Willis showed all what can be done, and so did Merriman (from a real football point of view). Regardless, of that, I again like the logic here and think Chris Long looks to be the favorite for this year. If not him, then another DL is my favorite as long as he starts... Merling or Jackson?? Not Harvey. Perhaps better long term, but probably not this year.
