Same here. The Falcons defense should be on the field a lot this season, which will give Lofton plenty of chances to pad his numbers.I'll take Curtis Lofton
X's 2. Mayo is the real deal.Jerod Mayo has easily been the most impressive rookie, so I'll take him.
Count a third. I wouldn't be surprised if Shawn Crable surprised everyone and made a run as well. To take someone not on the Patriots, I'm gonna agree with Afro and say Harvey has a good shot.X's 2. Mayo is the real deal.Jerod Mayo has easily been the most impressive rookie, so I'll take him.
For the guys saying Harvey. Aren't you concerned that he is not signed yet? Missing camp for a rookie is a big deal.
Back in 2001 Justin Smith didn't sign until Sept. 8, missing camp, every preseason game, and the first regular season game and then had a really good season considering that with 53 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions. He didn't win the award but it shows a rookie DE can have a good season when missing camp. I'll take LongFor the guys saying Harvey. Aren't you concerned that he is not signed yet? I would feel pretty confident in saying that he is the outlier. The Man With No Name said:Back in 2001 Justin Smith didn't sign until Sept. 8, missing camp, every preseason game, and the first regular season game and then had a really good season considering that with 53 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions. Thats funny. Picked him right before you. He is getting little love this pre season and it let me get him vey last pick in my draft.Since I don't play in any IDP leagues I haven't followed the rookie defenders very closely but I won't let that stop me from having an opinion.
I'll throw out a homer pick in Kenny Phillips.
Safety is a hard position to adjust to from college to the pros but Phillips has done nothing but impress in camp and is already taking first team snaps.
He is showing an understanding for the position by being in the right spot, great instincts such as sniffing out an end around in he first pre-season game and soft hands for the occasional pick. It is as clear as it can be this early in his career that he dropped in the draft due to unfair comparisons to former all-pro Miami safeties and his making up for defensive inequities on his team in his last year in college.
Considering the defensive front that he gets to play behind, I think this kid is going to be a star.
Pure homer pick.

Tough one. Looks like it's between Chris Long and Rivers, and since I think the Rams will be worse than the Bengals and will have the D on the field more often, I'll go with Long. I for one think this kid is going to be very good from the outset.enfuego said:I'll take Curtis LoftonLB's have a great history with the award. MLB's get a ton of action. He's in a great situation in ATL...
I like what you are saying. I am not hung up on the 3-4, 4-3 since as recent as last year Willis showed all what can be done, and so did Merriman (from a real football point of view). Regardless, of that, I again like the logic here and think Chris Long looks to be the favorite for this year. If not him, then another DL is my favorite as long as he starts... Merling or Jackson?? Not Harvey. Perhaps better long term, but probably not this year.twitch said:As a Pats fan, I cant stand behind the Mayo pick. Dont get me wrong, I think he'll be an impact player, but his team is too good. And he may not be an every down player. There will be plenty of other players on that team making plays. He wont accumulate thru the roof tackle or sack #s. Not many backers in a 3-4 do. The huge D #s typically come out of guys in a 4-3. And that New England O led the league in time of possession last year, and they'll be near the top again this year, meaning Mayo will be on the field alot less than other candidates. The D-ROY is gonna come off a mediocre team like Willis' Niners or Ryan's Texans. The guy will either put up a big sack or tackle total, and imo, Long is gonna do both for the Rams. He'll be on the field every snap of every play he has a breath of air in his lungs. And name me the other guy on that Rams' D that's gonna offer up alot of help to Long. There you go. Chris Long. D-ROY. That kid is gonna be tenacious straight out of the gate.
I think Dizon is going to put up alot of tackles this year from the MLB spot in Detroit. That D will be on the field a ton.
