Seems like a pretty long term bet that Nolasco's K rate resurgence is real.
Even on his down years, his control was good enough to where he was never worth less than 2 WAR.
Nolasco is the poster boy for advanced pitching stats. His FIP is consistently better than his ERA. Fangraphs' WAR formula is based on FIP, so Nolasco's fWAR is considerably higher than his bWAR.

If you believe in FIP, Nolaso is a solid 2 win performer and is getting paid accordingly. If you look at ERA, you have a guy with a lifetime 94 ERA+ who has been between 84 and 101 ERA+ for the past five years, which is basically Jason Vargas territory.

He seems like the kind of guy who would eventually end up pitching in Minnesota.

Absolutely.

49/4 is a steal for Nolasco. Very nice move.
It's similar to Edwin Jackson's deal last year
I thought so too, but Minnesota lost nearly 100 games last year and doesn't seem like it's going anywhere fast. Throwing this kind of money at a guy seems a bit out of line.Surprised he went there and they signed him tbh.
I agree I think the Twins overpaid for him, the team needs more then Nolasco to win. He's not coming to minny to win a WS that's for sure, so it has to be the money

The Royals announced that General Manager Dayton Moore has agreed to a two-year extension that runs through the 2016 season. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Only savvy part of this decision was the timing of the announcement. Between Thanksgiving, the Chiefs playing the Broncos tomorrow, and the three nearby college football teams still playing, this news could get buried deep enough locally to go unnoticed.

It would have been the perfect time to announce they were trading Wil Myers.

Precisely. They snuck in that news last year in the aftermath of the Jovan Belcher murder/suicide. They may not know how to run a team, but they know how to bury bad news.

They have nearly three decades of experience

Instead of spending 20 million a year on two avg/slightly above avg pitchers, just spend the same damn money on an ace. So ####### dumb.

I like this gamble for the Twins. They're also trying to sign Pierzynski.

Carlos Santana is playing 3rd base in the Dominican leagues. Be fascinating to see if they let him try in spring training.

If, big if, Hughes could figure out how to throw his fastball with some sort of action on it, and locate it, that's a steal.

But again, these are issues that a lot of middling pitchers face.

Just glad I'll never have to look at his stupid face again, except when the Yanks RAKE his weak garbage all over the park.

Extreme pitcher's park should keep a lot of flyballs in the yard. MUCH less pressure too. Up until this past season, he wasn't actually a terrible pitcher. He just had never come close to living up to the hype. In Minnesota, he has no hype. People almost expect him to suck, so when he goes out and pitches to a mid-3's ERA with solid K numbers, he'll turn out to be a bargain.

Yep, he'll make nice cash and toil in obscurity while helping the team to a workmanlike 70-92 record.

Seems like a perfect fit.

So, who gets non-tendered tomorrow? Stubbs? Arencibia? Hanson? Travis Snider? Chris Stewart and John Axford sound very likely. Anyone else?

Kazmir to Oakland for 2 years. Money not announced yet, but I think I like this over re-signing Colon.

ETA: $22m over 2 years. No options.

:hifive:

Nice bounce back for Kaz, I'm pulling for the kid. Oakland is a good fit.

2/$22M is more than I expected but Kazmir was solid last year. Health is an obvious concern but the Oaklands should be able to piece a decent LHP out of he and Brett Anderson.

Anderson AND Kazmir! What, is Oakland made of money? Anderson and his relatively friendly $8mm next year is expected to be shipped out. Apparently Oakland offered a similar deal to Hudson first, although I'd much rather have Kazmir. Colon's obviously headed elsewhere, too.

Pretty obvious that Oakland's front office takes the view that injuries are more random happenstance than indication of further injury. They may not be wrong.

Ben Sheets disagrees

I bet 2 years ago Kaz wondered if he'd see one million per again never mind 11

Crazy that Kaz got that kind of money. Damn.

Did Cleveland even offer him a deal?
The Indians have been pretty quiet so far. They've lost Kazmir and Joe Smith to Free Agency and will probably lose Ubaldo Jimenez. They released Chris Perez. Their big acquisition of David Murphy essentially offsets Jason Kubel, whose option they declined. They did resign Jason Giambi.

Murphy is probably an upgrade over Kubel, sad as it seems. Kubel was pretty horrible in 2013.
I agree it's an upgrade but not a huge or guaranteed one. They were both terrible in 2013. Kubel was a better hitter over the three previous year and is a half-year younger. Murphy is a better OF defender but no gold glove.

Except for the last couple weeks of the season, the Indians didn't look like a 90 win team. They don't look like one to me now either.

Kazmir was better than solid last year, imo.http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/as-add-scott-kazmir-keep-doing-as-things/
He got hot in the second half but his ERA+ was under 100 over the whole season. He also doesn't pitch deep into games, averaging less than 5 2/3 innings per start.

Fair point. Interesting to see how well he does and how healthy he stays. Could be a huge waste of money for Oakland or could turn into one of the bigger steals of the offseason.

If Robinson Cano wants a contract for more than $200 million, he's not going to be wearing pinstripes next season.Long baseball's spending leviathan, the New York Yankees are adamant their stance in negotiations with the star second baseman is not pure posturing, sources told Yahoo Sports. Despite Cano's request for a nine-year, $252 million deal in the parties' last meeting, the Yankees do not believe Cano is worth the highest average annual value in the game.

"They are not going to go to $200 million," one executive familiar with the Yankees' plans said. "Period."
I'd offer him 40 grand plus all the hot dogs he can eat.
