2015 New York Giants - WK10 Cruz announces season ending calf surgery (1 Viewer)

It looks like the Texans are going to release safety DJ Swearinger. Does anyone know anything about his game and if he might fit in with the Giants
Blurbs i read about him is he's a hard hitter but sucks in coverage and has trouble with the run game. Has attitude problem. Texans could get a 7th round pick for him. Sounds like he's the type that just cares about making the ESPN highlights for a big hit.

This is any another case where the Giants could go from thin and ok to Good with Good depth for free ... But the Giants rarely make the obvious move.

Swearinger was claimed by TB so the NYG never had a chance to get him. I am not sure he is a good fit anyway. He isn't that good IMO.

From Rotoworld:

Will Beatty - T - Giants
Giants LT Will Beatty suffered a potentially serious pectoral injury while lifting weights on Wednesday.

He's being evaluated this afternoon and could be sidelined 5-6 months if he needs surgery. The Giants devoted a lot of time to shoring up their offensive line this offseason, and losing Beatty would be a huge blow after he rebounded in 2014 following a down 2013 campaign. Marshall Newhouse, Justin Pugh, and first-round rookie Ereck Flowers would all be option to replace Beatty if he's to miss the start of the season. The front five remains a question mark for the G-Men.

I wouldn't mind if the Giants had at least one other legitimate Tackle (right or left) on there roster ... but they don't.

Pugh's a guard and Flowers is an unproven rookie

Meanwhile the Cowboys are so stacked they have no where for La'el Collins

I wonder what was wrong with Barksdale that made him sit on the market for so long. Going into free agency he was considered one of the best OT's available and he is in his 20's so he isn't old. The Giants could have used him but I never heard about them even taking a look at him.

Apparently the 1st OL alignment for the OTA was this

LT - Flowers

LG - Pugh

C - Richburg

RG - Shwartz/Jerry

RT - Newhouse

Randle has been doing great in OTAs, maybe he's going to build on his good games from the end of last season.

TE Donnell in walking boot today.

TE Donnell has achilles tendonitis. To me, that's a sign he didn't keep up on his running and stretching. He has said he focused on improving his blocking in his personal workouts.

WR OBJ has sore hammy, the opposite one from last year. His sitting some today was "precautinary". Doesn't seem like it's a major issue so far.

DE Ayers, lateral ankle sprain still swollen. Not a high ankle sprain and is considered minor.

MLB Beason, flight was cancelled from Charlotte so he missed today.

WR Cruz worked with trainers on the side doing one legged hops and running routes.

Not that it makes too much difference now but with Cruz and Beckham out the starting WR’s in OTA were Rueben Randle, Corey Washington, and Preston Parker

Isn't leaking medical records illegal? I wonder who did that and what's going to happen there. "They" (not sure who "they" are) wouldn't let NYG people see him but someone leaked medical records? That doesn't seem right IMO.

I am glad they revoked the long term offer they made to him. Given the way he has played over the last 3 years I didn't think he is worth it even before he hurt himself. I thought using the franchise tag on him was questionable too, and now given what's happened I wouldn't be against revoking that and letting him become a free agent. The NYG need the cap space and JPP just hasn't been that good for the last 3 years anyway. I loved drafting Odighizuwa and I hope he is able to take JPP's place. Between Moore, Ayers and Odighizuwa, along with the other depth they have, they should be in decent shape at DE without JPP.

I disagree about the DE being in decent shape

None of the guys you mention play the run nearly as well as JPP plus the highest sack total of any DL on the roster other than JPP in one season is 7.

I know I am in the minority but I think the guy was worth the long term offer that was on the table.

I believe that JPP was ranked in the top 10 against the run for DE and he gave you double digit sacks

I agree other than JPP and Hankins, no other DL has shown to be a 4 down starter.

Moore and Odighizuwa are obviously unproven but I do think they have the ability to be good starting DEs. JPP rebounded a bit last year during his contract year, but he played poorly for the 2 years before that so I just don't trust him to be good going forward. We have seen it many times - a player who has underperformed but has a lot of upside suddenly plays well in a contract year and then gets a new contract and goes back to underperforming. Now that he seriously injured his hand I trust him even less going forward. I agree that JPP is good against the run and that it's risky to go with mainly unproven players going forward, but this team always seems to be right up against the cap and giving an inconsistent and injured player a huge amount of money isn't a good idea IMO.

I think Odighizuwa has the ability to be an every down DE

Moore well I hope I am wrong but he seem like a one trick pony to me. Too light in the ### and undisciplined to be an every down DE. Great pass rushing potential but I don't think he has every down DE in him. Again I hope I am wrong.

Only time will tell on those two guys.

The the thing about JPP that worries me the most is his back. I'm way more worried about his back issues than his hand.

From Rotoworld:

Jason Pierre-Paul - DL - Giants
Giants owner John Mara has "no idea" when Jason Pierre-Paul will report to training camp.

"I don’t think JPP is receiving good advice right now,’’ Mara said. "He has told people that he’s fine and going to be ready to play, but until we see the hand, we’re just not sure. We obviously have to see him first and determine whether or not he’s capable of playing.’’ Pierre-Paul was given a 6-8 week timetable, but has still yet to meet with team officials. The Giants could rescind JPP’s franchise offer or restructure his contract depending on how he checks out. Pierre-Paul is be a candidate to open the season on active/NFI.

It seems like JPP isn’t going to show up until he feels like he is ready to go

What happens if that isn’t until say week 6? Are the Giants on the hook for the full amount of the franchise tag 14.8 million? Or does JPP get the prorated amount of the franchise tag?

I assume it’s the latter but I’m not sure.

In the meantime the speculation is that the starting DL would be Ayers and Selvie at DE with Big Hank and Jenkins at DT

From Rotoworld:

James Jones - WR - Giants
Giants signed WR James Jones, formerly of the Raiders, to a one-year contract.

With Rueben Randle ineffective and Victor Cruz rehabbing, the G-Men are giving themselves veteran insurance behind superstar Odell Beckam. Jones is reuniting with OC Ben McAdoo, whom he played for in Green Bay from 2007-13. Jones appeared withered during his lone year in Oakland last season, but offers a red-zone threat from the slot. Jones averaged a pathetic 9.1 yards per catch last year, but it was partly a function of Oakland's pop-gun offense. Jones boasted a 13.9 mark before 2014. Realistically, he's competing for No. 4 or 5 duties.

That signing makes ZERO sense to me.

Curious signing. It's going to be on heck of a WR competition in training camp

Beckham, Cruz, Randle, Washington, Harris, Davis and now Jones

Why do they think Randle was "ineffective" last season?

He caught 71 passes for 939 yards, ranked tied for 31st in ffpc.

Not sure "think" is an appropriate word when talking about Rotoworld writers...

I heard an interview today with one of the beat writers

He isn’t too high on Newhouse at RT (I don’t think anyone is) and that Long’s knees won’t hold up. He thinks the most likely scenario is kicking Schwartz out to RT and starting Jerry at RG.

Newhouse to be the backup Tackle

OBJ made the best play.

Cruz made an effort on a low pass. Biggest thing is he wasn't hesitant to go to the ground for the ball and showed no ill effects from doing so.

BBI's reports

July 31, 2015 New York Giants Training Camp Report

PRACTICE NOTES…
Some snippets from various media sources:

  • Wide receiver Victor Cruz looked sharp in his first practice since suffering the knee injury in October 2014.
  • The starting offensive line continues to be left tackle Ereck Flowers, left guard Justin Pugh, center Weston Richburg, right guard Geoff Schwartz, and right tackle Marshall Newhouse.
  • The starting defensive line had George Selvie and Robert Ayers at defensive end and Johnathan Hankins and Cullen Jenkins at defensive tackle.
  • The starting linebackers were Jon Beason inside with J.T. Thomas and Devon Kennard outside.
  • Landon Collins and Cooper Taylor were the first-team safeties.
  • The first touchdown of training camp was a quarterback Eli Manning slant to wide receiver Odell Beckham. (Video) Manning later hit Beckham again on a 60-yard catch-and run for a touchdown.
  • Wide receiver Geremy Davis made two acrobatic catches from quarterback Ryan Nassib. (Video) Nassib also connected with wide receiver Dwayne Harris. (Video)
  • Tight end Jerome Cunningham received a lot of work with the first team. He made a really nice one-handed catch on a seam pass. Larry Donnell also worked at tight end with the first team.

Te Matt LaCosse waived/injured due to... you guessed it, hamstring! As was WR Ben Edwards for the same thing.

'Kudos'

Bennett Jackson -- The second-year man from Notre Dame has quickly become the front-runner to be paired with Landon Collins as a starting safety.

"See ball, get ball. When that kid sees the ball, he goes and gets the ball," safeties coach Dave Merritt said. "He's making plays, he's making production and production as Spags [defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] has said over and over production is at the ball.
"This kid has been to get his hands on a couple of balls and passes already here by far more than any other safety I've had in camp so far."
Merritt and the Giants won't anoint Jackson, playing safety for the first time, as the starter. We won't, either. Jackson, though, has stamped himself as a serious contender.

Geremy Davis -- We know the wide receiver depth chart is crowded, with more quality players than roster spots. Every time I watch Davis, the rookie sixth-round pick from UConn, though, I wonder how in the world the Giants could justify cutting him. He catches everything. He runs better routes that the scouting reports indicated he could. He has gotten deep a couple of times, another thing the reports said he could not do. He is a guy the Giants believe they can make into a top-notch special teams player. The kid has been impressive.

Eli Manning -- I mentioned it on Monday, but Manning has thrown the ball extremely well the first few days of camp. He looks poised to have a big year, and that is good news for the Giants.

Victor Cruz & Odell Beckham Jr. -- Both of them have practiced, fully, during the first four training camp sessions. They get 'Kudos' just for showing up. More than that, though, they both look good. Beckham is running well, showing no signs of the hamstring injury that sidelined him in the spring. Cruz maybe doesn't show the burst you hope he will eventually have as he returns from his torn patellar tendon. He has, however, caught the ball well, looked comfortable and bounced up after hitting the ground a couple of times. So far, so good.

Robert Ayers -- In his second season with the Giants, the Jersey City native is becoming the leader of the defensive line.

"Robert has played well," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "He's been a really good soldier, he's been a good teammate. He's grabbed guys and talked to them, whether it be in the meeting rooms or out here. He's worked hard. I've seen nothing but good things out of him."

Devon Kennard -- Mark this down. If Kennard stays healthy -- and that is a big if given his history -- Kennard will be the best player on this defense. The Giants are trying to maximize his skill set. Let's just hope he can stay on the field so they can do just that.

Wet Willies'

Nat Berhe -- I'm a Berhe guy, but the second-year man has gone from a preseason favorite to be a starting safety to a guy who has barely gotten on the field during the first few days of camp. Berhe said he didn't think he was behind despite missing the entire spring with a calf injury, but it's obvious he is behind. Waaaaay behind. That's too bad because the safety competition remains wide open, and thus far Berhe really hasn't been part of it.

Cooper Taylor -- Taylor spent the spring working with the first team, and was still there the first three days of training camp. On Day 4, Taylor was paired with undrafted free agent Justin Currie on the third team. Taylor's size and athleticism are intriguing, but getting bumped all the way to the third unit is a major hint that the Giants are not liking what they are seeing.
