***2016 MLB Playoff thread: Cubs win for first time since sliced bread hit market (1 Viewer)

I think I told this story before but...

I was stationed with Mr Cubs fan, a true Cubs fan and baseball fan.  So in 2003 when I was getting out of the military I was staying close to him and I went over to watch football and the Cubs/Marlins game (it was a Sunday).  So I don't like or dislike the Cubs, which is weird because I despise the White Sux, Bulls, and Blackhawks like they were the devil themselves.

So the football went good, I think our fantasy teams both won and we were the top two teams.  Think there was a really good game that day, maybe a Saints game.  So we are watching the Cubs/Marlins and it's someone tense, but Cubs are up so cool.  #### the Marlins, they don't deserve ####.  Cubs are six outs away and then Bartman happens.  He's yelling what a ####### the guy is but whatever, #### happens and it's still 3-0 with Juan Pierre on 2B IIRC.  Then whoever hit that ball walks, single, 3-1.  Then the Alex Gonzalez error which I almost felt sick about and the room was complete silence and as the most outspoken person I know, I turtled.

When Mike Mordecai hit that bases-clearing double, I walked out and locked the door behind me without ever saying a word or ever mentioning it again.  I honestly felt horrible for him, I couldn't imagine my team losing that way and it had nothing to do with Bartman.  Alex Gonzalez was the real goat, I remember that game like it was yesterday.

So congrats Pete, hope your Cubbies bring one home in 2016.

Kluber v Arrieta or Lester?  Pressure on the Tribe to win game 1 with the short staff.
It'll take a near miracle for the Tribe to pull this off. Not that they can't or won't win.  It's baseball and the Indians have been flipping the odds all season long, but man, the Cubs are pretty much better in every way.

Should be a very fun series though. The best two managers in baseball. Maybe the two most exciting young players in baseball (Lindor, Bryant), though you could add half the Cubs roster to that list. The series could swing on a miraculous injury recovery from either team.

Just realized that the by far best team in baseball has to travel for game 1 and maybe game 7 because of a pretend baseball game 3 months ago. Cool.
While I agree that the whole thing is stupid, the Cubs did have the entire starting infield for the NL that day, and Kluber was the winning pitcher.

So, this guys goes to sporting events dressed in his Marlins gear?  I think I had heard about this before but is there more to the story about what he does?  Seems a little obnoxious but maybe I've missed part of the story.
No, that's pretty much it.

Still, the body of work clearly favors the Cubs.

Besides the fact that he gives away 3-4 free tickets per game with the only stipulation those people pay his generosity forward with a kind act, right, that's pretty much it.

He loves attention and he has a ton of ####### money. That's the long and short of it.

That was an awful time for Cubs fans.  What I remember most was Josh Beckett pitching like 100 innings (19 really) in the 3 games he pitched, including a CG shutout in game 5 then coming back in relief 2 days later in game 7.  Beckett wasn't quite right that next year and dealt with some arm problems, so take that!  Ugh.

I'm hoping for Lester - if only because it would give the Tribe an advantage with base-running.  Lester still looks a little jittery out there, and almost threw the ball away on a simple pitch to first over last week.  Tribe is a patient and smart base-running team.  They could get into Lester's head quickly and maybe manufacture some quick runs early.

Ground breaking strategy.  Let's see if it works.

I used the think that too when he started showing up during the Royals post-season games, but there is more to the guy. I agree he is an attention loving whore, but he does donate a fair sum of money in the communities where he goes to the games. At least he did here in KC.

Right about the time the Royals were winning, there were two firefighters killed on duty here. He donated $10,000 to each of the families, so $20,000.  I think he has also donated a ton of game tickets to people and things like that in all the cities he is in, plus he is known to pay for food and drinks for those around him.

Imagine the look of panic on Maddon's face as he realizes he's been outmaneuvered!
At some point the runner could theoretically be off the bag far enough for Lester to just step off, sprint at the runner, and underhand it to Rizzo.  It will be fun to see how Cleveland approaches it.  Like Bobcat just posted, the Indians are much more adept at taking off than the Dodgers.  But, Lester is also difficult to hit, and they run the risk of giving him additional easy outs on the bases.  I love baseball.

Just remembered I'll be in Chicago Wed - Fri this week.  I love to watch championship games with local fans.  Any recommendations where to watch or will all the bars be the same basically?  I'll be staying on the MM.  Going to grab myself a cubs shirt or jersey when I get into town.

Man, I don't know. The Indians are a really, really good team in all phases of the game. They have some power, a little speed, play great defense, and their bullpen is a lock-down bullpen.

I think they run all over Lester tomorrow if they get on base - no way Francona doesn't take advantage of that. I would not be shocked if the Indians win this series in like 5 games.

Also wouldn't be shocked to see this series go seven games. Should be fun. And as a Royals fan who got to finally see another championship last year, I'm really excited to see that one of these fan bases finally gets to experience it. Literally for the first time in their lives.
