Assistant <> HC.  He's about to encounter pressure, expectations and competition the likes of which he has never seen.  

Guys Malzhan went 3-4 against Alabama and he got fired.  I wish him all the luck in the world but he's about to enter an inferno.

Gus also consistently recruited classes in the top 8-12...and now TAMU has Fisher and Ole Miss has Kiffin and MSU has Leach. Will be tough to stay at that level.

Better than rehashing Muschamp but will be an interesting fit.

Yea I really think this is a terrible hire for Auburn. He did ok at Boise, not great, and Peterson laid the foundation there and they took a step back. He’s never recruited this part of the country. Wtf is Auburn thinking?

That they'll keep on setting crazy expectations that the next guy won't be able to meet later.

Don't think they took a step back at all.   Boise never had recruited a "4 star" player until Harsin got there.  Boise St has a lot of NFL players under Harsin.  Guessing 20 in 7 years. (I think there are six on DALL)
They've had a lot of injuries to key players the past 2-3 years on both sides.

Also, the foundation was laid before Peterson got there. He walked into some great teams also.  I rate them pretty even.  Peterson didn't do that great in Wash.

I think he relates to the kids 5x better than Peterson did. I think he will surprise in the recruiting, but don't know if he could ever get to Bama level.

 
Peterson back to BSU? 

He got Wash to the playoffs with a QB whose arm was made of pasta - that's notable as it's one of only two Pac12 teams to get an invite.  :shrug:

Peterson certainly had more success after leaving BSU than Dan Hawkins did.  He also had some of the best DBs in college football and recruited brilliantly there.

It appears he’s keeping many key staff members for one thing. Probably helps recruiting but man that’s got to be a tough thing to mesh in to your strategy as a head coach.

Well as a Cowboys fan let me be the first to say I'm not sure Dallas has NFL players this year :sadbanana:

It is an interesting hire for Auburn.  It would be difficult for anyone to go in and succeed right away.  He needs time to get established, and that's a luxury that not many fanbases afford their coach nowadays.

@JTalty: Even before Gus Malzahn was fired, the battle over who'd get to pick the next Auburn head coach had begun.

After talking to numerous sources, here's the story on the push to fire Malzahn and quickly promote Kevin Steele, and why it didn't work.

It seems like a situation where the boosters had way too much sway over the football program.

Sounds a lot like what I read about the situation at Texas.  A lot of big money thinking they should have influence.  The big boosters should just be the bag men and stay out of coaching decisions.  Like Bama.  ( @gump )  ;)

;)  We had the same problem...Saban solved it quickly.

This isn’t that...the Auburn AD won’t survive this if Harsin doesn’t surprise everyone.

There were a couple of salty OSU fans on twitter outraged that Justin Fields didn't make the final cut.  Even with my anti-OSU bias, I would not take him over the 3 QBs that made the final four.  Seventh is where he should be in the voting.

 
I don't know why more teams don't do what Buffalo just did at the goal line.  HURR DURR WE GOTS TO RUN IT UP THE MIDDLE!!

The Old Gray Lady does amazingly still exist, home of the UAB Blazers (and the coach who just turned down Auburn and their fancy video board). The Cramton is like the lower bowl of Legion. Lots of gray concrete.

Two of the most popular players in Boise State football history.

And, now, two of the top candidates to replace Bryan Harsin, who left last week for Auburn.

Multiple sources have told the Idaho Press and KTIK Sports Radio that Moore and Avalos — and their families — have high interest in the Boise State vacancy. Both had conversations and/or interviews in the past week with Boise State parties, its search firm and consultants, including Chris Petersen. Yes, that Chris Petersen.

Boise State is expected to make a formal announcement in the next few days, according to multiple sources.

Moore, the winningest quarterback in college football history who began engineering his coaching career in grade school, is the offensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys.

Avalos, a dynamic linebacker and criminal justice major who thought about a career in law enforcement before diving into coaching, is the defensive coordinator at Oregon.

Both are highly successful.

Both are young, dynamic personalities — in different ways.

He's had like one year where his defense has been decent since he left Florida. Sure, he can still recruit, but I don't think UM's problems are the jimmy and joes.

Harbaugh and Muschamp are both coaches unwilling to adopt their tactics as football evolves around them. Should be fun.
