2024-25 NBA Thread: Stephen A leading ESPN’s draft coverage by yelling about players he’s never heard of until now (51 Viewers)

I always kind of thought Okoro was a disappointment. Can anyone talk me into this?
The Bulls desperately needed a SF and have enough ball handlers on the roster. Okoro is on a reasonable contract for a rotation wing and Lonzo Ball is bound to get hurt soon. He's better than Patrick Williams and can swing between 2/3.

I actually mostly like this deal for both sides.
If Okoro were a decent rotational wing, I'd agree, but he's not. He's an okay defender, somewhat useful in the regular season, but he's a brick layer on offense.

Am I reading right that Lonzo is also expiring?

Team option for the following year so even better.

He's not a starting level wing but he's certainly rotation level. Players that can legitimately play SF, credibly defend, and can hit 36% of wide open threes don't grow on trees. The Bulls literally did not have a SF on the roster.

Positionally, you're right. Speaking of ball-handlers, though, I really hope the Bulls re-sign Tre Jones. I don't know if you saw Hollinger's BORD$ articles, but Jones was valued at $21 million although he'll certainly get less than that. He was fantastic for the Bulls before he got hurt. Trading Lonzo kind of helps the idea of re-signing Jones make more sense.

I'm not going to pretend to be informed on the makeup of any roster outside of the Cavs. I'm just saying Okoro is not a good answer to any question. The only reason he re-entered the rotation in the playoffs is because Jerome went ice cold, Kenny was grasping at straws trying to find a spark. If the contracts were reversed, then I'd get it, but they're not. Ball could spend the whole season out due to injury and this would still be an upgrade.

Just ran in to TJ McConnell and his family at Seaside Beach (place where Truman Show was filmed). Nice guy and stating the obvious, in street clothes just looks like any other dude.
Did his face look just as punchable in street clothes?

Punchable?

AAA kid #3 on the left and his buddy on the right.
Clearly middle is punchable, you can just tell. We can start with the long gold chain and dangling medallion outside the shirt. But overall none are near Jake Paul tier.

What's most interesting to me is the fact that the nonpunchables are wearing CROCS. Your offspring is great, btw, wearing a blood donor shirt.

But where in the world is this Croc revolution coming from? I've been seeing it around, having traveled recently. I thought Crocs would be long gone by now, but seeing young people sporting them is super curious to me.

This is for the stock thread but upon a brief glance, you've got a PE of 6. Along with any sort of boom, it's somewhat interesting. It would take a whole hell of a lot more to try and time this kind of buy, and it would be just that but what's the deal? Crocs go with Steven A as far as annoying goes. I take that back, not close to Steve.

Yeah - I don’t get their fashion. My kid is wearing Birkenstocks and his buddy the ugly *** crocs.

I had a pair of Birks like that back in my late twenties, except they were a darker brown and not sueded, which was always a cool look and feel (the sueded is, I mean). I also had the beard to go with the shoes' overall vibe. No Ray-Ban Clubmasters, though. Always Wayfarers. Heh.

That picture didn't make me think of McConnell as punchable at all, by the way. I might not love his fashion sense, but what struck me is that he's not a whole lot taller than your son and his friend, which means he must be something out-of-this-world athletic or regarding vision to achieve the level of success (let's face it, even backup NBA is the pinnacle) he has. Unreal.

Crocs at the gym have been a mainstay amongst the 25 and under crowd for a while now. I kind of see the value on leg day to slide on and off for shoeless squatting etc but when I see kids on the treadmill or shooting hoops in them I cringe. I guess it makes sense with the ugly Dad shoe trend the past 10 years. 90s Jerry Seinfeld would be a fashion icon in 2025.

Mike Judge tells the story of how everyone in Idiocracy wore Crocs:

The wardrobe woman had a limited budget. [...] So we shot it in 2004. She goes, she tells me, okay, there's a startup. And it was Crocs. But they weren't out in the world yet [and] she goes, look at these horrible plastic shoes with holes. She said we could really save a lot of money. Just put everyone in these things.

I said, well, but what if by the time the movie comes out [...] these become popular and people are wearing them? She said, oh, these are never going to become popular [...], these things are horrible. [...] Then it took two years for the movie to come out. By then people are going like, oh, that's pretty funny that you put everyone in Crocs

So LeBron opted into his contract for 2025-2026, but Rich Paul had some interesting quotes putting pressure on the Lakers to make more win now moves. Also interesting to me is that some of the language is in the past tense.

Rich Paul: “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

Yep. Putting them on notice.

So Ace Bailey reported to Utah and was already at the team facility working out. How long ago was the draft? Like four or five months ago? Don't know how anyone can root for him.

So it sounds like Malik Beasley got caught gambling on games. Dude was about to cash in for at least $60m and now he's going to be blackballed from the league. Bummer for the Pistons because he was a great fit with them.

I expect more and more of this.

What with the saturation of sports gambling, everything is blurred

Lebron is worth $1.2B. It seems to me that a great move he could make would be to cut his salary to the veteran minimum to enable the Lakers to have an extra $50M to work with to build a contender for the 2025-26 season.

It would give him the best shot to win another title and go out on top while at the same time enabling the Lakers to build the roster for post-Lebron. And it would be Lebron making the ultimate team first move; remember how much credit Tom Brady got for supposedly taking lower salaries to help the team? Brady never gave up $50M.

I'm sure some will scoff and ask when the last time is I gave up my salary for a year, etc. To which my response would be, I'm not worth $1.2 billion, so it's not remotely the same thing.

It’s a principle thing. He doesn’t want to set a precedent of this being expected of future superstars.

I don’t think it’s as clean as that as far as what kind of space the Lakers get if LeBron took less salary. I read an article a while ago that did the math and it would have taken something like a pay cut of $20m by him just to get the lakers to move from the smaller MLE to the larger one. Him leaving or dropping to the minimum doesn’t give the lakers $50m to spend.

I think if there were some FAs out there worth it, LeBron would have considered taking less. I think he would have last year if it would have helped the lakers get someone like Klay. There’s just nobody great out there this year.

Lakers are going to have to use trades to make any upgrades this year.

Why would he care about that? And why would what he does in year 20 (or whatever) after making a billion dollars establish any precedent for others?

He's obviously not going to do it, I get that. But if he cut his salary by $50M, it would be similar to if he just retired. It would give the Lakers the maximum resources possible to improve the roster for the 2025-26 season and beyond. It could only help their chances, meaning it could only help his chances at another title.

The allegations are from the 2023-24 season, when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks, sources said. Beasley averaged 11.3 points in 79 games that season, during which he made a career-high 77 starts.

At least one prominent U.S. sportsbook detected unusually heavy betting interest on Beasley's statistics beginning around January 2024, a gambling industry source told ESPN's David Purdum.

A gambling industry source pointed to a game between the Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 31, 2024. The odds on Beasley recording fewer than 2.5 rebounds moved significantly at sportsbooks before the game, shortening from around +120 to around -250 due to a surge of action on the under. Beasley finished with six rebounds, and the bets that were deemed unusual lost.

the Feds should lock him under the jail for what he did to Giannis

Or the Lakers could try to get is far into the luxury threshold as possible. Instead of letting players go just keep paying them and pay a billion dollars in luxury tax like the Celtics. They worth more money than Lebron.

If Lebron gets out of line, they should play hard ball and ship Bronny to the Wizards for some 2nd round swaps imo.

Idc what you’re worth asking somebody to take a 50M pay cut is crazy. Lebron is also well known for being cheap so that’s out completely. Man got excited for winning 500k for that nba cup.

@ShamsCharani

Bobby Portis intends to sign a three-year, $44 million contract to return to the Milwaukee Bucks, with a player option for 2027-28, sources tell ESPN.

Somewhat interesting because some speculated that if Giannis was going to be traded, the Bucks would move on from Bobby.
