2024 Philadelphia Eagles - First one was for the fans. This one was for the team. Next one is for the legacy. (7 Viewers)

Which former teammate is going to want to be the one responsible for breaking Saquon's leg, or get themselves hurt in a meaningless game?
The ones who care about what their tape shows? The ones who care what their coaches think? Believe it or not there’s guys who want to play there and do well for their coaches and teammates. The Farve sack thingy isn’t a common thing.

Oh, and if Nick said to the team this week that we HAVE to get Saquon 101 yards by halftime, It would be done by the second possession.
If you’re the Giants what would you do?

There’s zero chance he gets that on me if I’m the HC. The WR’s could run uncovered and I’ll sit with 10 in the box all day.
That team is on Cabo time. And its not like they did much when it matters-they're giving up 145 ypg average.
They literally just won last week and who wants a record set on them when they’re already a meme this season because they let him go?

I personally don't see the difference. Lions and Vikings are both in the playoffs and one of them will be playing next week in the first round. By the same logic they should rest all their starters to avoid injury and guarantee a bye week for their players. There's no guarantee their team gets a bye and severely puts themselves at a disadvantage if they play.
I’d want home field advantage throughout and the week off
And one of the teams will get neither. If they sit their players that will guarantee one week of rest. It's the same mentality.

The rest isn't nearly as important as the HFA. That's really what those teams are playing for.
But one of them won't get it. They could get hurt and ruin their chances at the super bowl. They should just rest and play for next week.
Historically, about 50% of #1 seeds make the Super Bowl. Lets give the Eagles (#2) a 30% chance. I think the loser of DET/MIN is still the 3rd best team in the NFC, so let's say they'd have a 10% chance. The other three teams can split the remaining 10%. (I'm not a gambler, so feel free to make these numbers more realistic if need-be.)

So the difference in the #1 seed vs. #5 seed is a 400% increase in making the Super Bowl. Resting players may be worth 10%, at most. Worth it for the Eagles because it's basically "free", they have nothing else to gain or lose. Clearly a different story for the DET/MIN winner.
It's the same mentality though. Playing it safe to try to win it all when nothing about winning it all is safe.

From a "Vibes" standpoint, I feel this is a bad move when the risk of playing is not that great compared to the entire season you went through. Where as the gain is eternal glory and team camaraderie to make them feel like they are a team of destiny ready to destroy anyone in their way.

Logically, yea sitting is the right move. Emotionally this feels terribly wrong. Hope it doesn't backfire.

I don’t think a fans emotion is gonna cause any kind of backfire. The second someone limps off, and someone WILL get hurt, all they’d be left with is their emotions. You can’t press a restart button when you don’t get the desired result. But I’m sure they’d bash the coach lol

Well, the "eternal glory and team comradery" didn't help the 1984 Rams win their home playoff game against the Giants.

None of that takes away from the fact that they are the second worst rushing defense in the NFL. If he needed 168 yards, I could probably get behind benching everyone. He needs 101. He ran for 176 on 17 carries against them last time they played.

It takes it away completely. How many of those previous games included a guy who could break a record, against his former team, after making them look foolish all year? None. This game is a 1 of 1.

Every single person in this thread will do everything possible me to make sure he doesn’t get that record. 8 men in the box would look light

Who are you willing to sacrifice for this record? Let’s assume he gets it after 3 quarters. Which 2 starters are you ok with missing the playoff game the next week?

That's the point. The chances of winning the super bowl are slim for every team. Rams had barely a shot that year but they are still remembered because of Dickerson. Dickerson didn't get hurt in the final game despite playing. He had 107 yards and a TD in that playoff game.

Or maybe instead of 22 guys being 100% rested and ready to go, you don't have any guys rested and everyone (or most of the guys) are sore and/or nursing minor/major discomfort.

Jordan Mailata on his Wednesday radio show a couple weeks ago said he was still really sore from his Sunday afternoon game. Why put your guys through that when you don't have to? For a rushing record?

What if the Eagles start their backups, then in the 2nd half when the Giants bring in their backups, the Eagles trot out the starters and get the record in 2 drives?

yes. To become part of history and give the City, its fans and the team what it wants. Use it as a galvanizing moment. And then go out and get ring.

ETA: It should be noted that whenever someone asks, "what does Nick Sirriani even do?" the answer is some form of, he's a great motivator, he inspires trust in the locker, he's a players coach and regardless of what we all think the guys in the locker room buy into his message year in and year out and because of that they are willing to run through a brick wall for him-which has led to him having arguably the best four year start to an NFL coaching career in the history of the NFL. Is there a risk that this decision demotivates the team? Maybe there's a little bit of resentment that the team wants to go for it and Nick is making the opposite decision? I'm not saying that there is, but similar to the bad karma concept above, I don't think its out of the realm of reality.

I'm sure he made a unilateral decision and didn't speak with anyone about whether to play the starters.

I have no clue how it’s not just this simple.

Someone or multiple people are going to get hurt….like they do EVERY WEEK.

Maybe there's a little bit of resentment that the team wants to go for it and Nick is making the opposite decision? I'm not saying that there is, but similar to the bad karma concept above, I don't think its out of the realm of reality.
If there’s resentment for the HC wanting his entire team rested and healthy in the name of karma they need to have their heads examined.

I personally don't see the difference. Lions and Vikings are both in the playoffs and one of them will be playing next week in the first round. By the same logic they should rest all their starters to avoid injury and guarantee a bye week for their players. But one of them won't get it. They could get hurt and ruin their chances at the super bowl. They should just rest and play for next week.

I think its worth the risk for home field
I think it's worth the risk for all time rushing record. Neither one negates or guarantees the super bowl.

How does getting the rushing record help the team? You are assuming he gets it as well. What if he played the whole game and didnt get it?
Im looking at it through a lens of the football gods. They gave Saquon this opportunity and the Eagles are taking it away because they are scared something will happen that didn't happen in the previous 16 games. This has clearly bummed out Saquon and some of the Olinemen.

It's tempting fate and I hope it doesn't bite us in the ***.
Are we sure about that? Barkley sat himself earlier in the year when Nick asked if he wanted to stay in and break a record. I think they're just as torn on it as we are and there's no clear right answer here.

Personally, I've always been of the mindset you practice and plan as normal and pull starters early. Not a fan of simply sitting them, ESPECIALLY if they missed the week before. IN that scenario I'd start Saquon but if he isn't racking up huge yards early he would be pulled before he got close.

Reports are he spoke to Saquon and a bunch of linemen. Saquon sounds like he was ambiguous about it but certainly said that he'd be interested. At least Mailata and Dickerson have said specifically and very publicly that they want the record. Lane has said both things-he felt that since it wasn't broken in week 16 than maybe rest everyone. But he also said he'd be down for going for it.
So yeah, Nick DID talk to a bunch of people that would be affected and when they said they want to go for it he goes the other direction. Thats exactly my point.

Because its not that simple. The guys that are potentially going to get hurt are all saying THEY WANT TO PLAY. This mentality of just sitting your players the final week is weak thinking and there are plenty of examples of teams coming out flat after resting. You play the game with your starters, they put in some work so they don't get rusty and if Saquon is dishing you get him the record and then pull everyone. Its that simple.

And just out of curiosity, what if he needed 65 yards? 35? 15? At what point would you capitulate and send him in? Because you sound like there is no scenario in which you'd play the starters.

I’m with Insien and Herb. I think it’s nuts to not go for this glory for everyone. Sure I would love another title. But I also said, I was happy with the one we got after waiting almost 50 years of my life. To have the all time rushing champion be from my team (who also happens to be from where I grew up) hell yeah I’d love that!

Saw someone suggest Sirianni said he "likely won't play" but then doesn't have to announce inactives until 90 mins before the game. So they all suit up and go for it just to throw off the Giants from game planning to stop him.

Highly unlikely but it would be funny.

Yes it is that simple. Who are the guys that are “potentially going to get hurt”? And which are you ok with losing for a playoff game? Or potentially next season if they tear something?

The part about resting your players being “weak” and there being examples of teams coming out rusty is just laughable. Do any teams who play in the wild card round start or play like crap after playing all season? It’s rhetorical, yes they do lol.

I don’t care about this record even a little bit. Neither does Barkley. As the games keep being added the records mean less and less. Odds are he’d have the record up until they add an 18th game which is right around the corner. We as Eagles fans attach ourselves to the strangest things.

I think it’s fair to blame Devonta again for that drop though. If he catches he catches that, we’re playing for the 1 seed on Sunday lol

There's a lesson in CFB right now. ALL of the teams with a bye lost. All four of them. Now, to be fair, those teams had more then 1 week off. One week off is ok, 2+ is not. I want Hurts to get a few drives

Was saying it's a lot like the new baseball playoff. When they switched a few years ago to have 2 byes, all the bye teams struggled with the time off. Managers didn't know how to handle that much downtime. I think in a couple years, College teams will have a better plan for the bye.

As for NFL, it's always tricky but teams seem to have figured out the best approach to stay ready while resting.

So no Jalen this week means when he steps on the field for week one of the playoffs he will not have played a full quarter in basically a month. Thats really not ideal.

Pro Bowlers
Saquon Barkley
Lane Johnson
Landon Dickerson
Cam Jurgens
Jalen Carter
Zach Baun

How does the #1 rated T according to PFF not make the Pro Bowl?
Half our secondary should’ve made it too also Baker Mayfield wasn’t voted a pro bowler? A lot of good players with great play snubbed

What if the Eagles start their backups, then in the 2nd half when the Giants bring in their backups, the Eagles trot out the starters and get the record in 2 drives?
Yeah not happening. Those back ups are playing to put food on their families tables because who knows if they are even in the nfl come this time next year.

Jalen Hurts will have at least 21 days of rest between his last regular season game and his first playoff game.

Patrick Mahomes will have at least 23 days of rest between his last regular season game and his first playoff game.

Does Mahomes need to “knock off the rust” too?

That was just NL teams with byes that struggled mainly and it was just recently IIRC

And college has always had an extremely long time in between playoffs and bowl games. They’re also not professionals

Remember we had that one fat head coach with a mustache and glasses? Remember how good he was at winning games after a bye? What’s Nick’s record after a bye?

Nope. Only applies to Eagles players.

The answer is . . . "we'll find out." The real question should be: "How long does/should it take to knock off the rust?" A drive, a quarter, a half, or a game? If it's a drive, no big deal. If it's a quarter, we could probably survive. A half, uh oh. A game, that's not good.

Given how we’ve run our offense this season I’m fine with him having extended rest. Rely on the running game and defense early on. Given how healthy we are, we should do well against any team in the first round even if he starts slow passing the ball.

I can see this being a good question but Hurts does have a tendancy to be rusty and slow when he hasnt played. Early in the season last few yrs Nick hasnt played him in preseason hasnt been pretty. If he passes protocol maybe use Sunday as like preseason have him do first two drives (maybe 3) to keep that rust off and put in KP if healthy or McKee after that.

I find the "We should play for the record" stuff funny when we don't have to play this week, and the playoff spot is the same vs last year we "had to play" for seeding or whatever, we lose AJ Brown, and then inevitably get blown out in the first round of the playoffs last year.

I don't know about you guys, but when I saw CJ Gardner Johnson on the ground holding his knee the last game, I started thinking about that moment and how it changed everything last year.

I get the want to go after the record mentality. I really do. On the other end, a guy like me, that people know likes to argue, etc, haha, not really in the mood to do "asterisk talk* with the morons of the world. Just not interested.

With that said, I am super amped about the rest of the NFL having to play this weekend and be forced to deal with some level of attrition when those eligible NFC teams start playing in the playoffs while we get guys healthy(er) and Dallas Goedert back.

Remember, that one key stat about how great this team really is when AJB/Devonta/DG are all in the lineup. Its hard to remember bc it only happened like 4 times this year.

On the other end, a guy like me, that people know likes to argue, etc, haha, not really in the mood to do "asterisk talk* with the morons of he world.

Well said. I’ve been thinking about it and I think I I don’t care about the record because I’m already happy enough with the 2k. He’s been better than advertised all season long. He’s also had a lot of touches and can use the rest.

This all feels like a win-win to me since the 1 seed isn’t attainable

Last years team was in a downward spiral. We weren't beating TB even with AJ. That Defense was the absolute worst in franchise history.

It felt like we were dead for 6 weeks before the playoff game

Yep and even with that said, if you had the choice to have him hurt or not, what would everyone pick? Lol

While you may be right, my opinion that the risk of injury to anyone, any starter, for the sake of chasing a record isn't worth it. The drop off on this team from starter to next guy is pretty significant across the entire starting lineup, on both sides. If we lose any of these positions for just one game, it makes our margin for error either on the wrong side, or almost to a 50/50.

Add in the fact the Giants will play like psychos, the refs - statistically speaking - have not really favored the Eagles on a game-by-game basic, and I get this notion that teams are trying to "out-physical" the Eagles after the whistle lately (I thought constantly throughout the last Commanders game the defense kept jumping on Saquon after he was tackled on 75% of the plays, no flags), the obvious cheap shot on Kenny Pickett last week - its the final game of the season, players might be playing extra dirty/whatever, its a divisional game, they definitely hate us for having great success with Saquon, while they still might love him personally (sorry for the long rant) - Just way too many variables to me personally to risk all of this and all of these factors, when we can really take the week off, start looking at film of both WAS and GB, and be really ready AND healthy when the first week of the playoffs start.

Pricing out tix for next weekend, any benefit to club level over finding the best deal 100 level?

If it’s raining, or super cold, having the climate-controlled club concourse to hang in before or during the game is better than the open air 100 level concourse.

On a reasonable weather day, the only advantages are slightly wider and padded seats and a few better food options.

Thanks! What’s best 100 level, too low it’s super expensive and hard to see but you are close to players if in the right spot….whats the sweet spot? Hitting the apps tonight, assume cost will go up once time is locked in ?
