*** 2024 Pittsburgh Steelers: Sub-par performance, awful coaching and bad luck in week 16 (9 Viewers)

If it continues, I don't care who the QB is next season.. They can bring back a 80 year old former player to just hand it off every snap, but every $ they have needs to go towards OL FA.

Without. good OL, A QB is pretty worthless, especially with this poor WR core.

Isn’t Arthur Smith big on the zone run scheme? If true, is it that migration that’s giving the OL some growing pains?

Fields looked pretty good. May need that mobility with this line. Jones looked so bad tonight. But the WRs are not getting open still either.
Would have liked to see Fields with Pickens, Freiermuth, starting RBs, starting OL. His top pass catchers were Scotty Miller and Conner Heyward.

I thought Russ looks finished as an NFL starter. Looked like his mobility is gone. If he can't buy time in this offense, he's got an uphill battle to anything other than checkdowns or prayer balls. Not saying Fields looked great by any means, but right now, I think this shouldn't be THAT tough a call, at least Fields can run. Play 1980's football, 60-40 run/pass (counting Fields runs) and win with defense, and the occasional PA deep shot to Pickens.

From what I seen Miller and Heyward have looked like two of the best weapons on offense.

Can JuJu still be an effective 2A WR -- possession or underneath type guy, with Pickens and Van and Austin being more vertical guys?
He is better than what they have by miles, but still not much of an addition. They really need a WR who can get separation. This was never a strength for Juju
I would very much argue JuJu isn't miles better than anyone anymore. He's put nothing decent on tape in 4 years, other than when he had a 1st ballot HOFer throwing him the ball, and even then, it was just decent. Would much rather bet on Roman Wilson (or Austin I guess) developing quickly than JuJu suddenly having good knees and playing like its 2020 again.

Man, behind this line.. Wilson is probably hoping Fields beats him out.
Nothing about this 1st quarter suggests Wilson should be starting. At least Fields can escape.
Juju was pretty good in KC. Last year was such a mess in NE, I think it is hard to assess anybody's tape from that team. Mostly though it is a dig at the Steelers WR room, which is an absolute joke. Austin is not good. He has had plenty of time. Wilson went after a lot of other receivers in the draft for a reason.

Which is why paying a kings ransom for Aiyuk is a bad idea

I'm surprised the oline looks so terrible.
Why? Rookie OLmen are almost never good. It takes 4 years ish to know what you have from a pick on the line.
I didn't expect them to be the best oline in the league by preseason game 2, but they look worse than I expected. Clearly there is room between waiting 4 years to see what you have and wishing they looked a little better at this point, right?

Trade a 2 a 3 and Austin for Aiyuk and let’s go. We need wrs that can get open and having him would help free up Gp.
If the door is still open, sure. The poor OL play isn’t getting fixed anytime soon.

The OL has been bad since we lost Munchak. OL players who left Pittsburgh have done well elsewhere.

Frazier will be ready and Broderick Jones had a lesson learned experience. Hopefully Broderick has his head on straight going forward.

I don't think it's a head on straight thing for Jones. His right arm/elbow is injured and being on the right side of the line is not doing him any favors. He has no punch and a lineman without punch will get abused.

Meyers loves his musical chairs, and is proving once again to be a poor OL coach. His stints in Carolina and LA showed as much, yet he was hired anyways.

Dotson and Green went elsewhere and found success. Questions need to be asked about the coaching of these prospects.

I would love to see Pat Meyer working elsewhere.

Having said that, I won't hold my breath. Little doubt he'll be there for years.

What are the odds Russ is our starting QB week 1? 90% chance, 10% Fields?

Jones was so bad at RT it's hard to say we got a decent look at what Russ can do. Russ mobility was limited. Not sure if it's the calf strain or what. Wasn't much moving the pocket around with him in the game. It's weird... like the offense is supposed to leverage a mobile QB but when Russ is playing we are timid about moving him around? I don't think we've seen the actual AS offense with Russ at the helm.

It was a preseason game. They don't want their starting QB to take hits. This is 100% Russ unless he is injured.

Falcons/Bronco's/Chargers - No games are easy but we have a chance at a 2-1 start.

Our floor is currently pretty low but there may be some ways to get it and the ceiling up a bit. The opening schedule could be much harder.

3 glaring things.

Watching #10 overall #77 chase around the guy who beat him.....wtf
#22 is just not fast (enough) He can punish tacklers but he takes forever to get downhill
Our positive offensive plays still look lucky rather than good.

Guess Essex agrees with the lack of punch diagnosis, but disagrees with a move to the left helping at all. https://steelersdepot.com/2024/08/t...nna-get-one-of-our-quarterbacks-killed-at-lt/

This season is going to be a disaster.
I think this is a 6-11 team. Slow start with Russ and all the injuries, I could see us starting the season at 2-6. But the OLine will improve and the QB play will settle in to a .500 team in the second half of the season.

Brod Jones had a bad night technique wise, he actually needs to slow down. He knows what he did wrong. And he will fix it. I am not concerned about him. Its the QB situation, and how Tomlin will mishandle it that scares me. And of course Cam, TJ, Queen or Minkah will get hurt on defense, pick your poison. And only 1 WR in todays NFL is awful. Khan needs called out for that, and I dont mean the Aiyuk saga, he had since March to get a WR, and didnt.
Frazier, Jones and Fatanau will be fine, in time, not today or tomorrow, but before Halloween I expect the Steelers OL to be looking good.
I bet my co-workers this is a losing season. Offense is no where near what is needed to win games in this NFL, maybe in 1976, but not 2024.

Steelers missed out on Jahan Dotson who was traded to the Eagles.

I personally would of like Jahan over Brandan Aiyuk. Obviously, the lesser talent but more importantly less draft capital and salary.

I'm really hoping that 1 of the quarterbacks separates himself to the point that the Steelers declare that person the starter. Hoping for Justin. Otherwise it's like the last 2 years. Where the Steelers settled on Pickett and the year before Mitch.

Small sample size today vs Detroit backups.

Tomlin will go with who he thinks will protect the ball better. Wilson will be his pick to start the season.

I’m no analyst but I rewound a bunch of plays today.

Someone please show me Jones making a good block. Ugh, we traded up for that. 2nd teamers today

He isn’t mean enough or something.
If that's the case, you can make the argument that it's still a preseason game and he knows he's starting. He played fine enough last season for a rookie. I look for him to be even better this season and make this a mute point. We over analyze preseason games too much sometimes. He really hasn't played a ton of college games unlike Frazier.

I imagine y'all appreciate Cordarelle now? He's grown on you as he predictably did on Tomlin?

It might be fortuitous for Warren to be out. (No disrespect to an injured man) Najee doesn't run tough when he needs to like he did in college. He's got more shifty stuff and slides n moves when I think "just put your shoulder down." Patterson is a highly regarded mentor from previous stops. He might be just what Najee needs.
Henry had some issues. They brought his college FB back and he met a few times with Eddie George and it about reminded Henry of his own self. Maybe Patterson does some good with Najee.

He looks like one of my Titans failed Ts. I wind up wanting the TE to play T while watching; that's absurd but I still think it
