2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (37 Viewers)

Saturday’s 1pm game is on NFLN. It’s expected the Lions will utilize the joint practices to get their starters reps, with backups & rookie taking most of the game snaps. Sounds like they would like to see a series or two from Teddy if he’s up to speed on terminology but they haven’t decided yet.

Jamo took 51 snaps VS NYG & we should expect him to have another busy day.

Detroit's fan base has never been this excited for a season AFAIK. I've been a fan since 1967 and I cannot think of any other time there has been this much belief and optimism in the GM and the Head Coach. Feels like this is literally the first time they have ever built a team the right way.

I can't wait.
You are spot on. I've been a fan since 1969 and agree with everything you say.

@ttwentyman

Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown trying to work through what looks like lower right leg injury suffered early in practice. Getting it taped now. Then Jameson Williams pulled up and grabbed at his right hamstring on deep route. Looks like he’s leaving practice field.

ARSB returned to practice. Jack Campbell also left the field with an injury but later came back out for ST drills.

No update on Jamo’s right hammy.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s big hits, trash talking lead to intense practice vs. Jaguars

Detroit Lions defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson was both physical and LOUD during joint practices, leading to a few minor fights.

By Jeremy Reisman@DetroitOnLion Aug 16, 2023, 3:15pm EDT

Detroit Lions defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson has been known to get in the head of the opponent on the field, but even after Wednesday’s practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars was long over, Gardner-Johnson lingered in the mind of receiver Calvin Ridley. During Gardner-Johnson’s media session after practice, Ridley interrupted.

“He’s a good player, man, but he talks too damn much,” Ridley said.

To be clear, Ridley was joking. He and Gardner-Johnson go way back to high school days as young talents growing up in Florida. There is very much a game-recognize-game relationship between the two.

But it would be impossible to talk about the opening joint practice between the Lions and Jaguars without mentioning how big of an impact Gardner-Johnson had, both physically and mentally. He came crashing down to blow up Jaguars running back Travis Etienne for a big hit that caused a scuffle between the two teams. A little later, he reportedly did the same to receiver Jamal Agnew, jarring the ball loose.

“To be the most feared DB in the league, you’ve got to be able to tackle,” Gardner-Johnson said after practice.

Team rules and general decency prevent me from reporting on what he was saying to the Jaguars skill position players, but he certainly was talking... a lot—a right he believe he’s earned through his play.

“Everyone knows we can talk, but when you back it up, you can talk as much crap as you want to,” Gardner-Johnson said. “I think when I play at a high level, it feed into my teammates.”

Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson can attest to that.

“He’s one of a kind, man. I’m glad he’s on my team,” Hutchinson said. “Even today, he shows why we brought him here. He’s a hard-hitter, man. He’s willing to come down and bring the juice. When practice might be a little lackadaisical, he’s going to come up and make a play and get the boys going.”

According to the man himself, there’s only one time of the day in which Gardner-Johnson turns off the intensity and trash talking.

“Sleep. Until I wake up. (Then it’s) like I’m cutting the car on. You’ve just got to keep going until the car run on empty. But this (facility) is the gas station, so I guess I’m fueled up everyday.”

The Jaguars receivers did get their own during Wednesday’s. Ridley scored at least two touchdowns ons the day, including an absolute bomb in which there was a communication problem in the secondary. Tight end Evan Engram and Zay Jones also scored during red zone drills. But the Lions defensive backs bounced back nicely, with Brian Branch recording a couple of pass deflections, and both Cameron Sutton and Malcolm Rodriguez notching interceptions.

Sounded like a pretty even practice, back n forth, though Goff struggled a bit with both ARSB and Jamo leaving early.

Media availability:
  • Aidan Hutchinson (0:00-4:02)
  • C.J. Gardner-Johnson (4:03-7:14)

Anecdotal thought from a KC fan. Not thrilled with week 1 being Detroit. You guys are a legit SB contender. Enjoy.

I believe Andy Reid is now 9-1 in season openers since he came to Kansas City. They've won their first game 8 straight seasons, which is the second longest streak in league history (Dallas won 16 straight.) Patrick Mahomes has never thrown an interception in Week 1.

Hopefully we have a good showing. Ended last season on a high note, but that means nothing. Every year is it's own deal, there are a lot of new guys who have never played together. Have to learn how to close out games and how to win all over again.

I'm really trying to avoid the fatalism that comes from 50 years of misery and causes me to react to opinions like this by being scared rather than excited. But Lordy, it's hard.

So instead, I'm trying to be Zen about the whole thing and go into the season without any expectations, positive or negative. I have faith in what Holmes and MCDC are building, and I'm also a little nervous about putting the team's fate in Goff's (undersized) hands. But I'm trying not to be existential about any of it.

Campbell said they’re looking to add another body to the wide receiver group. St Brown will be back Monday and might play P3 v Carolina. Jamo likely out the remainder of PS. He can start practicing Week 4 and they’re looking at seeking permission for treatment at the facility while he’s suspended.

Can`t believe it but I am going to the Lions-Jag game Saturday. First X game ever.

In the past I get offered at least 2-3 Lions games a year from my friends, sometimes more but it might be slim pickens this season.

All of a sudden the wives and family members all want to go to the games. The work ones I used to get any time are all gone already.

So I better go now.

Levi O. reported doing OK and now playing with second team defense. Will be looking for him in tomorrow's game. Also Rodrigo having trouble in pass coverage similar to last year.

Levi graded out 89.3 in PS1, second highest behind Jack Campbell. Only played 11 snaps but I think that’s in part bc they are comfortable where he’s at in his development. As long he stays healthy he’ll be in the rotation. I’m excited for him and Josh Padchal, huge bonus if they maintain availability.

Looks like Williams got dinged and will be out next two X-games before his suspension. Not sure what happened but he sure needed more reps.

Update:
Jameson Williams pulled up on a route early in Wednesday’s joint practice session against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions second-year wideout grasped at his right hamstring and immediately limped to the sidelines.

A few minutes later Williams slowly walked to the locker room with a trainer and did not return. On Thursday morning, Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered an update on Williams that indicates we might not see “Williams” for some time.

Denzel Mims is no longer in the room - waived with an injury settlement, the failed experiment won't cost a pick since it was conditional

signed Jason Moore (Findlay, 4 years with LAC) who has never made an NFL roster and has 6 catches in 20 practice squad call ups

With Williams value, or lack of value being an unknown getting DJ Chark back on a 3 year deal made sense. They paid him 10 million for one season. 3-20 proably would have got it done and he is only 26. Charlotte signed him for 5 million on a one year deal.

They were probably thinking the Saint is #1, and Williams would step up as #2.

Hope I am wrong but right now I am having a hard time believing Williams will come out in week 7 and light it up.

Obviously too early to give up on Williams but man ... things have not gone well to start his career. I hope he proves me wrong but not feeling overly confident that he's going to be a good player.

He's missed 19 games the last two years because of injuries and has never played a full season. He has had a list of issues that have limited him to 54 games in five seasons (of a possible 82). Chark again had surgery this offseason to correct a reoccurring foot/ankle problem.
That he signed a contract for half the salary he made last year suggests that he was looked at as damaged goods.

I agree he has missed time, Just seemed like he would have been a solid 2/3 guy with a taller frame than what we have.

Lions are primed for a big season and right now the WR room is a little thin.

Would not be surprised to see Holmes trade for veteran who is in the final year of a deal before the season starts.

Someone decent is going to be cut or traded in a salary cap move. Campbell even mentioned that the WR room was "wide open". Every time him or Holmes have mentioned publicly a specific position group something eventually happened. DB, QB, and PK all got attention so maybe WR is next.

Sorsdal was supposed to be a practice squad development project. Instead he will be a key depth guy. Unfortunately it says more about depth than his performance.

Okay fellas, I know you love your Lions but I'm hoping this game comes to a quick end so we can get the 4 PM EST game televised on time to see the starters in that game.

Tua and Hill and Mostert for at least 2 series. Stroud, Collins, and more for the Texans. Lots of oline and dline battles, Phillips, Anderson, etc

James Houston IV has expanded his game. Won't be a starter but good to see he can handle other responsibilities besides designated pass rusher.

Former OL T. J. Lang does the pre and post game shows for the Lions. On the pre game he said he also wants the game to finish fast, as he has a wedding to go to later.

This was the first and last X game I will ever go to!

We left at halftime and hit Vivios in Eastern Market for lunch/beer.
