2025 Detroit Lions: 0-0 HOF Game on tape, as DC said..."We got work to do" (34 Viewers)

Swift + Kerryon + Huntley + Bo is the best shape the backfield has been in since Barry. I’m not so sure that any one guy is going to dominate for fantasy though.
Exactly. How many times have we seen Lions backs hyped as great value in PPR & they end up being dead weight on rosters who are barely worth carrying.

Disregarding historical value, I cannot imagine going high on Swift. Huntley is not in the equation IMO (probably PR/KR specialist) but I think it’s an early down split and then Johnson/Swift on third downs. He’s highly unlikely to be a GL back & the Theo role was another regime.

I think Detroit RBs will he top half of the league in the aggregate but none of them are going to be RB1/RB2 material. FF wise its going to be week to week matchup/game flow dependent.

I would expect a per game average of

- 13 rushes,  2 receptions  for Swift

- 8 rushes, 1 reception for Kerryon

- 2 rushes for Bo

- 2 rushes and 2 receptions for Huntley/Ty/Mckissic

Now maybe that’s just because the Lions haven’t had a real difference maker in the backfield and Swift will demand 18 touches a game. I’m not sold though. Also, like Kerryon, I believe he was always dealing with nagging injuries in college.

I’ve heard this one before.

Bottom half for those same 22 years, but this could be the year they break that streak. But as you said, fantasy wise it will still be a committee.

Good read.

I have a bit of a man crush on Justin Rogers. I don’t know, it’s just Detroit has such a long history of sour face sportswriters - Rob Parker, Terry Foster, Carlos Monarrez. Plus all the Skip Bayless wannabes o’m talk radio. Rogers never goes dark.

Plus he worked his ### off to get his job. Went to state school (EMU) that’s not exactly an elite journalism uni, took every part-time crap job MLive would give him, finally got a FT gig & the salary was redonkuosly low ($24-26K iirc), finally got the NFL beat when Killer Kowalski passed (another guy I loved), to finally a real job at a real paper after a decade of outstanding copy. Guy has interests outside of sports, likes to travel, good taste in music, hot wife, beautiful daughters (having girls ALWAYS makes you a better man.)

He never goes off on rants or becomes effusive if they have a coupe good weeks. Big sports fan, and rightly not a fan of any of the teams he covers. He’s pretty fair in his criticism without being nasty or going low. Def has a good rapport with the players, I trust his insight on how the team is doing. Sports writing is becoming a lost art, there is so much mediocrity right now. Lots of hot takes and egos. He never deals in that bs.

This. Feel like Quinn drafted irrespective of need. Why TF are we spending 2nd round capital on an RB when there are so many other needs and RB is not a big weakness. Why did he stay at 3 where the only thing that made sense is taking the best CB (ties the league record for highest puck ever for a corner.) You lose a guy who is only a year removed from being a Top 100 player. At best, if the kid exceeds expectations, in a year or two your defensive backfield will have the same level talent at one corner. One shutdown doesn’t impact game flow as much as a disruptive edge rusher. With so many needs, we could have used another pick or two picks.

GTFO of the 3 slot and draft multiple DEs/LBs who have a chance at being difference makers. Instead we land one potential guy in the third and a couple late round scrubs.

I just feel like BQ let the draft come to him & took BPA instead of developing an overarching objective and planning accordingly. Admittedly I have unhealthy contempt for P & Q right now. #### this team.
They didn't really have any leverage to trade down. The only power move would have been to draft Tua at #3 and force Miami's hand. I still think the worst pick of the first round was the Pack trading up for Jordan Love. But only time will tell, a long time for that matter.

I also don't have an issue with Swift in round 2. I'll take a top ranked Georgia RB all day long.

The  Hockenson pick was awful. It's probably another year or 2 before TJ reaches his potential because that's how the TE position works. Ed Oliver is exactly what the defense needs. That said, I think this was the best Quinn draft yet. I would have preferred not to take a RB in the 2nd round but at least they took a RB who can add a lot in the passing game.
The Ebron pick was awful. Hockenson will end up working out. But I said at the time, I thought Denver got the better Iowa TE several picks later. And Hock at #8 doesn't really make sense in any draft in the past 3 decades.

Really like the Cephus pick for you guys. I wouldn't be troubled by his 40 time. WR2 next year IMO when Marvin Jones is likely gone.

Im watching highlights again, no way this guy is a 4.7.  Was he hurt or something?

He simply isn't slow on the field.

According to the Rogers article I linked above,

"Whether it was unknown or forgotten, Cephus vastly improved on his time at Wisconsin's pro day in March, trimming it down to 4.56 seconds."

Pro day times are always about 0.05 seconds faster than combine times. So he is still probably a 4.6-4.7 guy.  I saw some good route running. He often seemed to get off the line quick and get ahead of his defender, but I felt the CBs often caught up to him quickly forcing him into tough contested catches. Being a contested catch guy, I also worried about his really small hands. However, being slow doesn't mean he can't succeed.

Pettigrew a D minus?
That's tough. He was a late first rounder so a little less capital. However, he was less athletic than Hock or Ebron and was touted as a blocker first. He came out after a senior year with 400 yards and 0 TDs. I think I have to give that pick an F. If Pettigrew came out today, I bet he's a 3rd round pick.

The other thing with Cephus is the biggest issue on the Lions offense is a lack of speed. It’s a big slow offense. Cephus only makes it slower. They need speed, it’s 2020 ffs.

I do agree with that 100%. I think Cephus will be a good player for us, but for years we have not had a consistent field-stretcher. I don't understand why this continues to be ignored. Honestly with the amount of cap space they had I was hoping they would have signed Robby Anderson to a 1-2 year deal just to see what kind of difference that made with our offense.

My eyes might have been deceiving me somewhat but that’s why I liked Marvin Hall last year. Seemed to have some speed and get deep

Has Detroit had a top ten FF RB since Barry retired? Aggregate not PPG.
I was looking at old Lions stats today to get a feel for how Swift might project. Reggie Bush in 2013 (RB7 in PPR and RB10 in standard) is the only top 10 FF Lions RB since Barry retired. Kevin Jones in 2006 was RB12 in PPR (RB23 in standard) to be the only other Lions RB to finish as a RB1 during that time.

I feel like Swift is by far the best RB Detroit has had. I think this landing spot will be better than people realize. I don’t think KJ can stay healthy. But even when healthy think that Swift is more talented then KJ.

Good call, he was a very efficient deep down field WR last year. 4.45 speed (at least that’s what it was 5 years ago when he came out of sxhool)

He caught 7 passes for 261 last year. 37 yards a catch!

Speaking of speed, the rookie rb Huntley has some too. If they give him Agnew's punt returns he might see the field a few times a game.

Cribbed from USA Today,  some defensive talent still out there for teams with the cap space:

Yannick Ngakoue

From declaring he's ready to move on from the organization to lashing out at Tony Khan, the Jaguars'  vice president of football administration and owner Shad Khan's son, Ngakoue has tried multiple routes to force his way out of Jacksonville while saddled with the franchise tag. The front office isn't inclined to oblige him, with GM Dave Caldwell saying last week the defensive end's options "are very limited at this point in time." Ngakoue, 25, has stated he refuses to sign a long-term deal. Yet even with Jacksonville selecting LSU defensive end K'Lavon Chaisson in the first round last week, Caldwell remained firm that the team expects the former Pro Bowl pass rusher to be on board for 2020. Absent a significant offer to sway the Jaguars' minds before the July 15 multi-year deal deadline, the two sides look bound to continue their game of chicken well into the summer.

Jadeveon Clowney

Hard as it is to believe, the premier defensive talent in NFL free agency remains unsigned a month and a half after the market opened. Clowney, 27, clearly didn't field a multi-year offer to his liking. With the market mostly dried up, a one-year deal that allows him to try for a bigger payday in short order might be the most sensible route. Despite defensive tackle Jarran Reed taking Clowney's old jersey number, the Seahawks have maintained they would be open to a return and remain in touch with the three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher. The Titans and Browns also could be in the picture.

Everson Griffen

Since voiding the remaining years of his contract with the Vikings, Griffen has been in somewhat of a free agency holding pattern. The four-time Pro Bowl defensive end recorded eight sacks last season to bounce back from a turbulent 2018 campaign in which the Vikings ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation. Once able to meet with teams to answer organizations' questions, Griffen could find renewed interest. A reunion with Minnesota could be possible. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer initially expected Griffen back before talks broke down, and the pass rusher told NFL Network to "never say never" on the chances for a return. He also could be attractive option for the Seahawks and Pete Carroll, who coached Griffen at USC.

Griffen would be the cheaper but it is reported teams will need to evaluate him re: mental health..

Lions will need cap space for Golladay extension which needs to get done before start of season. Also I think Da'shawn Hand is going to shine this year if healthy. He was very good in his rookie year. Would like to see Lions lock him up sometime before start of next season.

I don't see any chance the Lions sign Clowney or Griffen. Clowney wouldn't want to come here to begin with. Bob Quinn has given no indication that he would take on a "risk" like Griffen.

Nice. It seems to me like we haven’t played the Bears early in the schedule for a good few years now, always feel like we have played them at bad times for us whether through injury or form. All being well, I like this as a season opener and would fancy our chances to get off to a good start to the season but we all know how that usually goes

week 1 - v Bears

week 2 - @ Packers

week 4 - v Saints

week 13 - @Bears

Bears still have to decide on which QB they are going with. I would make Detroit a slight favorite to bounce back from their recent Chicago games.

Good to get the game at Lambeau early in the season, but they are still looking at a probable 1-3 record heading into Jacksonville.

Typical Lions hate from the NFL. I saw a tweet that averaged the bye weeks for each team for the last 12 years and no shocker, the Lions have the earliest.

If the defense can be middle of the road they can compete with any team. Chicago doesn't have a QB, GB is deteriorating. For some reason we always seem to play AZ as an away game and have little success there.  After NO the schedule isn't that hard I think until the last three games. It would be exciting to have to beat Brady and TB at home to make the playoffs. I can dream.

It's a good dream, one that I often have. But then I eventually wake up.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Lions compete for the playoffs. Many are sleeping on how good this offense will be. Stafford looked as good as ever last year and now he'll have Swift and Hockenson. Darrell Bevell proved to be a huge upgrade over Cooter so I trust the play calling more than in years past.

I'm not impressed by Green Bay or Chicago. Green Bay almost made the Super Bowl but they looked like an average to above average team all year and I don't think they improved. If the Lions and Packers played tomorrow I wouldn't think the Lions are overmatched or something.

Logically, they should be able to compete. The problem is they always find an incredibly stupid way to lose a game and then fall apart afterwards. And Patricia hasn't shown that he can keep the ship afloat when there's any adversity.

Those in 2 qb leagues or just someone who waits until all their league mates take a qb could find value with MS.  All 3 wrs are basically playing for contracts and what should be a better running game might keep the chains moving. Maybe the time to buy low.

Hock in 2nd year, Swift is an improvement in pass catching RBs. Plus Stafford was as good as any QB not named Lamar Jackson last year. He was on pace for 5,000 yards, 38 TDs and 10 INTs last season.

Nothing changes till it does but I hear you. Lions seem to lose at least one game each year due to weird rule or strange referee call. Fans, refs league all seem to expect some type of Lion screwup or implosion.

Can hope that Quinn and Patricia have learned something along the way and with good OC and DC we can compete.

This is what makes it so brutal.. it is rarely out of the realm of possibility.  But if you flip a coin, the Lions will lose... even if they win (#### you Steelers).

Was hoping they would take a late flyer on Jones from Michigan.  Big target with good speed.  Needs some work but has upside.
