2025 Detroit Lions: 1-1 Lion crush Da Bears. Still seats available on the Bandwagon. (161 Viewers)

The Lions have been drafting some injured guys in '21 and '22. At some point one of them needs to hit.

Mayhew used to draft a lot of guys who fell because of injury concerns. Ryan Broyles, Jahvid Best. Mikel LeShoure was healthy coming in but tore his achilles right away.

Doesn't feel like that, though - other than Jameson, it's just been bad luck with Onwuzurike & Paschal. Brad Holmes is a pretty solid judge of talent. Not just the drafts, has had some good budget FA signings and UDFA rookies work out.

There's no such thing as curses (right?) but we have had really bad luck with 2nd round picks the last decade or so.

The Lions better pray Goff doesn't get hurt because these backups are terrible.

Dan Campbell on his backup quarterbacks: "I think we got things answered. I'll leave it at that."

Boyle will be cut. They gave him every opportunity to win the backup job. Blough is mobile but he's nothing more than a practice squad level QB. It is what it is. Teddy Bridgewater is not walking through that door.

MCDC says Okudah has won the starting CB job opposite Amani Oruwariye.

Consensus 53 man projections have Reynolds and Igwebuike in, Jackson and Jefferson out.

There is no consensus on WR, generates a lot of debate and differing opinions.

Starters: Amon-Ra St. Brown, DJ Chark, Josh Reynolds
Reserves: Kalif Raymond (PR), Quintez Cephus, Trinity Benson
PUP: Jameson Williams
Out: Tom Kennedy, Maurice Alexander, Kalil Pimpleton

I wouldn't be surprised if Alexander sticks and they carry 7. Personally I'd like to keep him as the returned and cut bait on Raymond. Pimpleton has potential and hopefully goes to the Practice Squad. Feel bad for Tom Kennedy but it's Jace Billingsley all over again - great practice / preseason WR but just not NFL caliber, e.g., you're too damn short. At least Jace was a burner, the lacrosse guy has that MCDC grit but there is not path for him to have a role.

OL should be an interesting cut decision. OT Matt Nelson and C Evan Brown are locks. A few weeks ago it seem like Tommy Kraemer would the 8th and final lineman. But Logan Stenberg had an outstanding game versus the Colts (highest offensive PFF grade) and followed it up with another strong performance against the Steelers. We've been waiting three years, did the switch finally flip for him? Balance wise it might be best to keep T Dan Skipper and G Sternberg bc Brown could also slide to G if needed. But we know by now what Skipper brings (this is his third stint with the Lions and 8th stop of his six year journey), Kraemer is a better player. What are the rules on practice squad again? Think they were tweaked again, need to look that up.

8 or 9 OL correlates to 9 or 10 DL. Brockers, Oneil, Onwuzurwike, and Taylor seem like locks on the interior, Hutch, Harris, Julian O, and Austin Bryant are safe EDGE players. Isaiah Buggs, Jashon Cornell, and John Cominsky are in the bubble battle. I think AG would like to run NASCAR packages on passing downs but not sure they will given Paschal is starting the year on the PUP and Romeo O may not ever see an NFL field again. Rookie James Houston is probably headed to the practice squad.

LB Starters: Alex Anzalone (MIKE), Malcolm Rodriguez (WILL)
Reserves: Derrick Barnes, Chris Board, Anthony Pittman
Out: Jarrad Davis, Josh Woods

NB - seems like the Parker/Hughes debate is still ongoing. Harris and Bobby Price will be the reserve CBs with Jerry Jacobs going to PUP. Unlikely Chase Lucas survives but hopefully we can sign him back to the practice squad.

S Starters: Tracy Walker, DeShon Elliott
Reserves: Ifeatu Melifonwu, Kerby Joseph, JuJu Hughes
Out: C.J. Moore

Right now, if players not on PUP get put on IR, they are done for the year so there will be players cut and potentially brought back. If they cut to 53 and then put them on IR, reverts to 4 games. So I think both Boyle and Blough will be cut and if the Lions don't find another backup, Blough will be brought back. I have to think they can do better.

At RB, Reynolds should be a lock. Igwebuike is very good on special teams and plays on every unit, but Justin Jackson looked good running the ball and on kickoff returns. It's close. Jefferson didn't impress me at all. If it were up to me I'd keep Jackson.

At WR it seems to be Cephus, Benson, and Kennedy fighting for 2 spots. I have to believe Cephus is safe. I have no idea about the other 2. Benson has a much higher ceiling but Kennedy is making it hard on them. I think Benson sticks because of special teams but who knows.

More to come later.

At TE, I'm not sure how many they will keep but I can't imagine them drafting an injured Mitchell in the 5th round, then cutting him. Zylstra has looked good but I don't think makes it unless they keep 4 TEs. Mitchell has much more upside imo.

At OL, Brown and Nelson are locks. I thought Kraemer was before but Stenberg looked great in the last 2 games. My guess is Kraemer, Stenberg, and Skipper are fighting for 2 spots, but they might only keep 8 and use the practice squad for a couple more.

I think Siebert will be the kicker because of his leg but I'm not a big fan.

It's clear that the season is doomed if Goff goes down for any length of time, so they should cut both backup QBs, and sign someone off the street if Goff goes down.

Chris Steveler is about to be cut by the Jets

24-of-33 for 277 yards, with five TDs, one INT, no sacks, a 124.6 passer rating this preseason

Won a Grey Cup in Winnipeg, has been bouncing around practice squads since early 2020 (ARI, MIA, BAL, NYJ.) WTF not.

Cutdown from 75 to 53 is done over two days. Like most teams the Lions want Brad and MCDC to deliver he news.

Latest cuts:

No surprises, these were the easier ones I think. Lamm will get another chance, the NFL is always looking for big uns to play OT. Pimpleton is a burner and might get picked up. If not he and Kennedy probably are headed for the practice squad. Likely the end of the line for Davis and Funchess.

Ha! My autocorrect will be happy to hear that. I was more interested in some Chark news.
lol I figured but I also figured I would answer the question as asked. We’ve heard nothing but positive from Chanel. Nothing overwhelming, I don’t think he’s going to be 1A here but he will definitely stretch the field and be useful in the RZ. Chark seems happy. He said he likes that Detroit is asking him to do a lot more than the Jags ever did.

AJ Parker - projected by many to be the starting Slot Corner - was a surprising cut.

Another surprise:

[Dave Birkett] There's an undrafted rookie that turns heads every summer for the Lions. This year, it was DT Demetrius Taylor. Taylor has made the initial 53-man roster. Strong camp for him, well deserved spot.

A few competent quarterbacks coming off a great preseason getting cut today. Surely one of them could be signed after we cut David Blough. That is the plan, right?

:oldunsure:

Mild surprises:

WRs Alexander & Benson out, G Logan Sternberg & CB Chase Lucas in

Kept both Demetrius Taylor and Buggs for DL. Levi O. long term back issues and Pascal hopefully temporary hernia recovery contributing factors plus both guys have shown well.
Surprised that Jefferson was kept over Gordon I. and Justin Jackson. Thought Jefferson showed the least and he doesn't do well on ST.
Mild surprise Benson was cut.

Also according to reports Dan Skipper was having a strong camp but not retained.

Godwin Igwebuike is a four phase STer & played decent at RB in limited snaps last year - bit of a surprise.

Justin Jackson always seemed like a JAG at both Northwestern & with the Chargers. Looked great camp & explosive in preseason, though.

There’s always a little mystery beneath the NFL veneer, who knows why he wasn’t a fit - something we probably didn’t see or won’t ever know.

This is Skipper’s 8th team in 5/6 years, third stint with the Lions. Always a demand for OT who might develop. Thought he was the #4 tackle and they would keep 8/9, Nelson was pretty solid down the stretch last year.

Logan stepping up the last 2 preseason games gave him a stay of execution, & was the final straw for the Arkansas guy. I don’t think they planned on keeping 6 IOL until only recently.

I'm curious to see how much the bottom of the roster churns over the next day or two.
There should be a few changes. I have to think Levi and Iffy will go on IR, so there are 2 spots. I'm sure there will be at least 1-2 waiver claims. Players that likely won't be claimed like Pittman and Igwebuike could be back. Unless he signs elsewhere, Skipper will be on the practice squad. No idea what happens at QB but I'm not very impressed with the players that were cut.

The biggest surprise to be was the Lions keeping Jefferson. I have never been very impressed with him.

Boyle is just not good enough, Blough will be next when they find another QB.
They are cutting Blough and signing Nate Sudfeld. I would guess Blough will be signed to the practice squad since he knows the offense but who knows.

Makes sense. He knows the offense and can also run a few RPOs if they need to replicate a mobile qb.

No doubt there is a level of comfort with Sudfeld because Deuce worked with him in Philly.

Happy they moved on from both backups, they're terrible.

Running on 3rd and long - an Analysis of last year

In week 7 of last year, with the Lions 0-6 and the offense was sputtering, the Lions began to do something strange by modern NFL standards - calling running plays on third and long situations,

Given that the defense was rushing 3 or 4, that the defensive line was spread out to rush the passer (leaving open gaps between the tackles, i.e. running lanes), and that the non-rushers were dropping pretty far back in coverage, these plays theoretically had a chance to go for big gains.

Did this work in practice? What is interesting is that these plays - highly unconventional - were fairly effective. They amounted to 15 attempts, 178 yards, 11.7 YPC (!), 3 TDs (!), and a 33.3% conversion rate, which is pretty solid for third and long. It should also be noted that many of the runs that did not go for a first down set up up 4th and short situations.

Below, I have recorded all the cases I can find of the Lions running the ball on third and long during and after the Rams game, when they introduced this. I omit scrambles by Goff since those are obviously not designed running plays.

**Rams**

3rd and 17 (14:29 2Q), 14 yard run

3rd and 11 (8:49 4Q) 11 yard run

**Eagles**

3rd and 18 (6:49 3Q) 7 yard run

3rd and 10 (0:49 3Q) 9 yard run

3rd and 8 (third and goal 7:18 4Q) 8 yd td run

**Steelers**

3rd and 12 (8:43 1Q) 7 yard run

3rd and 10 (0:57 1Q) 0 yard run

3rd and 8 (0:20 2Q) 6 yard run

3rd and 9 (13:44 3Q) 12 yard run

**Browns**

3rd and 8 (2:05 3Q), 57-yard TD run

3rd and 14 (3:14, 4Q), 5 yard run

**Cardinals**

3rd and 10 (3:37 4Q), 3 yard run

**Seahawks**

3rd and 10 (11:16, 2Q), 26-yard TD run.

**Packers**

3rd and 9 (6:54, 3Q), 1 yard run

3rd and 16 (0:48, 4Q) 12 yard run.

**Overall**

15 attempts, 178 yards, 11.7 YPC, 3 TDs, and a 33.3% conversion rate

**Conclusion**

The standard play on third and long should be pass - especially since we have weapons now - but mixing in runs was an effective strategy for the Lions last year, and should be continued this year.

The play not only has a decent shot at conversion, but can go for huge gains. Swift is particularly dangerous in open space, and the defense will give you running lanes on third and long that they would never give you otherwise. An added bonus is that, if you run one of these successfully, it can keep the defense honest when you pass on the next third and long.

And when these runs fail to convert, they often result in in 4th and short, which is a go-for-it situation in many parts of the field.

Jefferson was cut by the Lions to make room for DT Benito Jones, who was claimed on waivers.
I wonder if there wasn't some gamesmanship going on here with cutting Jackson and initially keeping Jefferson - i.e., it is more likely that someone gets scooped up during the second round of waivers, so they tried to sneak Jackson though in the first round, knowing that Jefferson was getting axed for a DL later.
