2025 Detroit Lions: 4-1 Lions win battle of the big cats. (27 Viewers)

Saw a chart last week of rookie snaps ranked by team.

By unit, Lions are dead last on offense with 32 (Mitchell.) On defense, we're 3rd with 1,340 (Chi 1,573, HOU 1,569.) Hutch, Rodriguez and Joseph all made PFF's midseason all-rookie team.

Last year rookies played 6,172 - think that includes ST. Jets played rookies 5,795, no other team was over 5K.

Stange game but a W is a W. Fields have the run part down but he is really struggling in the passing game. Even when he had all day he locked in on one receiever until it was too late. At OSU those guys always had 3-5 yards separation. In the NFL it is 1-2 yards window most of the time.

For a change the Lions had the better second half.
Two weeks in a row the Lions defense has made the game winning stop to preserve the lead and victory.
Campbell had one 4th down go for it and converted for a TD. He also reasonably punted and kicked a FG.
Like last week the Lions were outgained in yards but again won the turnover battle.
Swift's limited touches supports that he is not healthy.
Somehow with all the injuries to their skill players they scored 24 points. St. Brown took a lot of punishment on some hits.

Also on Chicago's last play Fields was shredding tacklers and it seemed he was going to get away. But he didn't, the Lion defender was holding on for dear life. Fields is one tough guy.

Good to string a couple wins in a row, most teams wouldn't think much of that but this team really needed it. Giants have been very good this year but it's still a game within reach of winning.

Not only that but division wins. Like I know the Vikings are 8-1 and they are a good team. But they are not a great team, neither are the Packers or Bears. The Lions should have won that first Vikings game and be 3-0 in the division. This division is wide open over the next 2-3 years. There is a chance that the Lions finish #2 in the NFC North this season. It's unlikely but entirely possible. And they could really build on that going forward.

This is why I think Fields is a bit of a mirage at this point. The rushing stats are amazing, no question, but he still looks shaky in the passing game and takes way too many sacks. He's breaking NFL records but the team lost both games.

DC talked about the team’s discipline throughout his presser today. No turnovers, only two penalties (none on the OL), the young defensive players are growing together and learning to trust one another.

Obviously some things to clean up. Joseph completely whiffed on the 50 yarder to Kmet, they were in single high and he blew the assignment. Anzalone led the NFL with 5 missed tackles. But they two three and outs and a pick six in the 4th quarter. Down games for Barnes and Kerby Joseph but the D line generated a lot of pressure while getting home for 3 sacks.

Ragnow walked out with a boot on his left foot last night. Status for WK11 unknown.

Amon-Ra is our only real weapon on offense right now. Can't wait for Jamo. Don't think we will ever be able to count on Swift to stay healthy. Running back is a position that can be addressed in free agency.

Hutchinson's 8 tackles lead the team. The tackle he made on the goal line stand was an outstanding effort. Still think he should be DROY, but Sauce will get it from playing in New York.

Sauce Gardner is grading out in the high 80s in coverage and has from Week 1. Aidan is coming on, you can see he is improving so much. Campbell said in his press conference that the first week of practices they ran screens against him the first 3-4 days bc he was pinning his ears back every down. He said they were chuckling like "dude, that's gonna be so easy for teams to take advantage of you." Last week he came off the edge to drop into coverage for the goal line interception. This week he caused the pick six bc he dropped back and made himself huge, they wanted to throw the TE screen to Kmet. Fields double clutched and then made a looping throw trying to make sure it cleared Hutch.

But he's been up and down. He's getting double teamed the 2nd most in the NFL and earlier in the year when Pascal and Comiskey were hurt they didn't have anyone on the inside to help him out with pressure. Now they have him standing up, dropping off, switching sides - he's a very disruptive force that teams have to account for. From a consistency standpoint he's not deserving of the DRotY if they gave it out today. But lot of games left - he's at 5.5 sacks rn, wouldn't be surprised if he winds up with 12-14 because that's how good he is playing rn.

Still giving up too many big plays but boy the last two weeks the defense has really turned it around and made huge plays in the 4th quarter. Lions rookies are playing more snaps than all but 2-3 teams. You can see they growing together and learning how to function as a unit. It's not about hero ball, one guy making spectacular plays (though they are getting some of that) - it's about trusting each other. Coaches have tweaked a few things but on the whole it's the same philosophy and same message all year, it's just that now the young guys are finally "getting it."

  • Jameson Williams 21

  • Kerby Joseph 22
  • Penei Sewell 22
  • Aiden Hutchinson 22
  • Alim McNeil 22
  • Josh Paschal 22

  • Amon-Ra St Brown 23
  • James Mitchell 23
  • Derrick Barnes 23
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu 23
  • Malcolm Rodriguez 23
  • Jeff Okudah 23
  • D'Andre Swift 23
Building a nice young core. Other than Iffy all these guys have made a positive impact, and other than Swift they'll all be part of this through the end of the rebuild.

D'Andre has proven he cannot be trusted to be the guy bc of his utter lack of ability to stay on the field. Rookie deal is up next year, maybe deal him for a pick if possible.

ETA: OK, obviously Jamo hasn't made any positive impact on the field. But he will. I also missed Brock Wright, who turns 24 at the end of the month. But that's every Detroit Lion player on the active roster or IR. Two practice squad guys (J Jefferson & D Taylor) are also 23 but unlikely to be part of any long range plans.

Rewatching the game tonight, this was one of my big takeaways. Campbell did not put undue pressure on them by being overly aggressive in his decision making. He was patient and trusted the players would respond.
  • Opening play Fields rolls for 28, man what a terrible start. Bears shot themselves in the foot with a RZ holding call resulting in a FG. (60 yards, 4:21)
  • Offense responds with 14 play, 68 yard drive. No real decision (4th & 7) but I think it was important they came away with points. Three times they were incomplete or negative yardage on first down so nice job converting when they got into a bit of a hole tbh.
  • Bears get one FD but the second was wiped out by a face mask penalty on Kmet, punt
  • 3 times they dug a mini hole on first down: incomplete, 10 yard OPI, no gain. But they responded by converting on 3rd and long then 2nd and long. On 3rd and 1 Swift gets a call on...ugh ...do not understand why he jumps outside the lane instead of pressing the hole. 3rd year guy who has been told repeatedly about staying inside waiting for a crease - he gets away with it enough but dang it's frustrating, here he loses. MCDC decides to go for the TD on 4th and goal from the 2, and Brock Wright makes it 3 TE TDs since the trade.
  • Chicago responds with a 15 play, 75 yard TD with 21 seconds left. Hutch makes a great stop on Monty on 2nd and goal from the 1, but then Fields runs about 40 yards for the 1 yard TD.
Good half, man they are gashing the Lions and Fields is something else rn, but they're right there in the game.
  • Offense goes 3 n out
  • Balanced 10 play, 76 yard drive ends in a short TD to Kmet. Chicago converts a couple third downs. Just looking like the D has no answers.
  • One first down, then stuffed, Goff fumble (recovered), 5 plays 6 yards and a punt.
  • Herbert gains 12 and 9, 2nd and 1 from midfield, Detroit is in single high and WHERE THE **** ARE YOU GOING KERBY JOSEPH 50 yard TD to Kmet with no one within 20 yards. Welp, that's gotta be the game, 24-10.
  • After one FD Goff takes a sack, Fox shanks the punt 30 yards, we've seen this one before. Gonna be a blowout.
  • Defense steps up big time with a 3 and out of their own. Alright, baby steps, on to the 4th Q.
  • 4 play 65 yard TD drive - 4 positive plays for 30 yards, 4 Chicago penalties for 35 yards, Swift takes it in from 9 yards out. OK, we got a game maybe, 11+ minutes left.
  • After a 2 yard, Bears back themselves up with a holding penalty. Hutch forces a bad Fields decision by dropping off to cover the TE screen, awkward pass sails and Okudah picks it off for the pick 6. Oh, baby, tie ball game!
  • We can't have nice things. On 3rd & 2, Fields makes an insane play and runs through everybody for a 67 TD. Gut punch. Bears miss PAT.
  • Offense goes 3 n out, punts with 7:47 left. Oh well, good effort I guess.
  • The defense again comes through with their own 3 n out. But 91 yards to go, no way, not this QB, not with midgets playing WR2/3 and backups at TE. Jamaal 11 on the first play, Kalif a 20 yarder, but ARSB gets hurt on his next catch. 3rd and 8, Tom Kennedy wide open on a crosser, 44 yards are you kidding me? 13 yarder to St Brown (he's back in!) to the 1, Jamaal for the game winner, Badgley barely squeezes in the PAT against one of his former teams. 2:21 left, Bears have all their timeouts, I don't feel good about this just yet.
  • On 3rd and 5 Joseph commits a defensive holding penalty. Bears at their own 30, need another 30-35 to have a chance at a game winning FG. On 2nd down Hutch gets a sack finally. On 4th and 8, Julian Okwara gets his second.
  • Not done yet, Bears will get one more shot if Detroit can't make a FD. But Jamaal seals it with runs of 6, 3 and 7 for the icing on the cake. Victory formation.
Was not as ugly as I expected it to be. Chicago beat themselves with the penalties and the pick 6, though you could also argue Detroit was a) more disciplined for a change, and b) that pick six was the direct result of Hutch blowing up the design and Okudah getting to the right spot. Defense came up big on three second half possessions. Offense was a team effort, not really any playmakers rn besides ARSB but credit to Raymond and Kennedy, those were huge receptions. Williams gutted out a lot of tough yards. Swift had the nice TD scamper - he is still very talented - but overall wasn't really a big part of the story. The offense line played well, and the defense did just enough. More importantly, they made big plays when it mattered the most.

Remember when the lions were supposed to have an easy schedule? Per NFL network rankings, they've already played 3 of the top 4 teams and #5 is coming up on Thanksgiving. 🐓

SOS is so fluid though. 1-2 key injuries, mid season trades, guys coming off IR, teams off to great starts without having been tested yet. Will be a lot of up/down teams over the last 8 weeks and some of the pretenders will get exposed.

Jameson Williams expected to start practicing soon. Most beat writers here believe he will play the last 4 games or so. I can't wait to see him on the field and I think it's very important for him to play this year.

In addition Romeo Okwara has started practicing. They have 3 weeks to either activate him from IR or else he will be out for the year.

Charles Harris and Josh Paschal declared out.

Josh Reynolds listed as questionable but after 3 practices of DNP-LP-DNP seems unlikely he'll play. Lions put Trinity Benson on IR, but DJ Chark has been practicing and might return this week. Probably be multiple practice squad moves today to fill out the WR slots.

Frank Ragnow left Chicago wearing a boot (actually had a boot on alternating feet during the week), but Campbell said he should be good to go even with only 1 LP this week.

DeShon Elliott has been LP all week.

No other DNP/LP injury designations being reported, this is actually the healthiest the team has been in awhile.

Giants HC Brian Daboll told a story in his presser this week that when he interviewed Dan Campbell over a decade ago, the Lions HC was slamming chairs and hitting walls. Broke the reporters up.

MCDC said it wasn't false but it was exaggerated.

“Daboll, he tells that story to everybody,” Campbell said. “He tells it to me every time I see him, we talk, he brings it up again. I don’t remember throwing chairs through the walls or anything. That didn’t happen. But I did demo on chairs. But, yeah, he definitely exaggerated it. But I was sweating and I was out of breath, and I did use a chair.”

Campbell did acknowledge that rather than sitting in a chair answering questions, he got up and moved around in the interview room. But Campbell says he was just demonstrating the way he would coach tight ends, which is the job he was interviewing for.

“Running routes, blocking, everything. It was an hour of technique work,” Campbell said.

It worked, as Campbell got the job as the Dolphins’ tight ends coach, working under Daboll as the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator.

You are what your record says you are. People hate that idiom but there is a lot of truth there. 3-6 is plum awful. Three straight and back to back road wins, now that's a story people love. DC said he let Aubrey Pleasant go bc it's a production business. Fans need to be patient during a rebuild but we need to see results on the field.

Giants are the biggest fraud in the NFC this side of MInnesota. Very winnable game tomorrow. Conditions will be a factor, windy (19 mph), 38 at game time but wind chill will be mid-20s throughout the game. Both teams are very thin at WR. Key to the game should be sustaining the run game, and the Giants obviously have a ginormous edge there with Saquon, the NFL's leading rusher. But both run defenses are pretty week - Giants give up an average of 5.5 per attempt - worst in the league - and the Lions (30th) aren't far behind at 5.3. But while Detroit has surrendered 15 rush TDs (2nd worst behind da Bears), the G Men have only given up 5.

Winnable game. Play another disciplined game, win the turnover battle, contain Barkley (can't stop him but hopefully stay away from chunk plays.) Daniel Jones has 4 4th quarter comebacks and 5 GWD this year, only 2 interceptions - it's a cowardly kind of offense for the most part but he's done a really good job taking care of the ball. While he's nowhere near Fields or Hurts in running the ball, he's very capable as a runner. But if Detroit can generate decent pressure I could see him throwing a couple ill-advised interceptions. That's who he has been for four years, not a believer that he is anything more than an average QB with a future as a very good backup. Speaking of which, that sounds like Goff's future.

Hoping they get Swift more involved. He is a maddening player, and I don't even mean the lingering injuries. He consistently wants to bounce outside or cut back rather than follow his blocks. IDK, think the staff doesn't trust him, and looking at film, it's understandable.

Will be a tough day to throw the ball. Need the O line to play great. The defense has been stellar in the 4th quarter the last two weeks, and this is a good game to see if they can extend that. Big Blue has a lot of limitations offensively and the Lions could exploit that.

Hello friends. I'm going to the game tomorrow and have a question about Ford Field.

Is there anything particularly good to eat for lunch in the stadium, or should I just pick something up along the way, and eat in the parking lot before we go in?

That said, any parking tips would be appreciated, too. I don't plan on doing any tailgating, etc., so was just planning on parking at the "Ford Field Parking Deck", as Google maps calls it.

My advice is to avoid the grub at Ford Field and walk over to Niki's before or after the game on Beaubien in Greektown... One of the best Detroit syle pizzas 10 minutes from FF

No recs but wishing you safe travels, and may you have stellar service wherever you end up. Would love to see the Bills win one game in Detroit this week.

Hope y’all have a blast.

The menu looks delicious. How busy should I expect it to be? Any idea?
Don't know (busy) I have never had a problem getting a table, it's a big place... Personally, though, I am a big fan of eating the food that a city is "known for" and Detroit is famous for it's "Coney Island" hot dogs and "Detroit style" pizza, and personally speaking, the Detroit style pizza far surpasses the best of "coney"... Buddy's pizza (Detroit style pizza) was voted the 6th best pizza in America in GQ years back, and I prefer Nikis... a "MUST" IMO ... GO !!!! and let me know what you thought of it if you do !!

Awesome. Thank you! I'll plan on leaving a little earlier to be sure we have time to try it out.

I totally agree with you about trying food areas are known for. That was why I posed the question initially. Having lived in West MI for about 25 years, there's certainly nothing like that around here. Definitely not like some of my favorite food cities - Buffalo, New Orleans, Austin, Atlantic coast seafood cities... Thanks again for the advice. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Think this is the first game since Week 1 we get to watch the Lions. Super excited.

Wife just informed me we won't be back in time for kickoff because we have a building committee meeting after services today (church just bought a historic building and have a ton of projects lined up.) This slays me. Our Alabama born and bred pastor won't take Saturday afternoon meetings bc roll tide but I gotta watch the game on my device while taking car service? :lmao:

Go ahead at laugh at their past all you want. This team has a path.

noticed a lot of postgame questions for MCDC were along the lines of "what are you doing differently, what changed"

he kept saying "Not really. We just got a couple things cleaned up and guys have been doing their job. They're learning what it takes. We all are."

Today was just good, solid fundamental football. Forced turnovers, didn't make any. Took a couple penalties, other team had twice as many. You don't have to be perfect to win. You have to make a few more plays. Today they made a lot more plays than New York. But it wasn't one or two guys doing something extraordinary, it was a solid team effort in every phase. felt very in control, well prepared, executed, didn't go crazy when they made a play, OK head down let's do it again. just a really good team effort.
