2025 Detroit Lions: 4-1 Lions win battle of the big cats. (63 Viewers)

Sounds like Brad Holmes is shaking the bushes looking to upgrade WR, upgrade the third RB, and upgrading our second string tackles. Two names that he is looking at are Mike Evans and Cooper Kupp.
Tyreek cost a known late 1st (29th), mid 2nd, and a couple of later picks. Evans might cost a 2nd. Lots of speculation, but makes sense for TB to tank for 2024.

Trading for Evans is a bad IMO, he is already banged up and I think he isn't a Larry Fitzgerald type that ages slowly and is good for years. He probably will fall off a cliff like AJ Green.

Isn’t Kupp kind of redundant with Amon Ra? I don’t get trading for Evans really either. He’s a contested catch guy and I don’t think that’s really Goff’s game. A one year rental on Hollywood? I just don’t see at this point in the year there being a significant move to make. That time has passed.

Of those names mentioned, only Kupp would interest me. Caught a lot of passes from Goff the 4 years they were both with the Rams. Kupp or St.Brown would obviously have to move out of the slot. 30 isn't that old for a WR.

There's already been plenty of trade activity across the NFL, but we're still about 30 hours out from the cutdown deadline.

Surprise trade candidates, including:

- Bears WR Darnell Mooney
- Lions ED James Houston IV

Cut candidates:

- Vikings WR Jalen Reagor
- TE Zack Kuntz

Reported today that Lions were in the hunt to get Trey Lance. Interesting.

Right now if Lions have cap room why not Evans? It would only be a one year commitment and Evans would be playing for his last contract. Maybe he could mentor Williams a little bit too.

Like Sparky once said "Give me a roster of 25 guys on the last year of their contract and I will win the pennant every year. "

[RODGERS] Talking about the impending construction of the practice squad, Dan Campbell emphasized the importance of that group, noting many will end up playing in games for the Lions this season. Says he doesn't think of it as a 53-man roster, but more a 69-man roster.

Not sure why Campbell does not value Houston that much. He was a key reason for the Lions turn around on defense last season. Must be some issue with his work ethic and picking up the defense. He is such an effective pass rusher.

When Holmes thinks the times is right both will be extended. Both will be around for a second contract.

I am afraid we may long for the good old days of Badgley this season.

Drummond was cut. Not that surprisingly as I doubt anyone will sign him and he will come back to our practice squad.

Not sure why anyone values the opinions of the Scoops LaPues of the world out there. Is there any actual proof that Holmes was ready to get rid of Houston or is this just more random internet blathering that comes from the media?

I have seen a few reports that Houston could be traded. Not sure what happened, but he has fallen out of favor really quickly. We might be down to only 10 pro bowlers soon.

Once again "reports" mean nothing unless it happens. Just like Trey Lance was probably never going to be a Lion

I disagree, where there is smoke there is fire. Does that mean Houston is going to be traded? Maybe, maybe not, but I am sure Holmes has floated his name out there.

And how exactly are you "sure"? Do you or Jon have an actual link or quote to base that on?

Here is the PFF article everyone is basing this on. Nothing but a random guess on the writers part, coupled with his hilarious take that the Lions would be wrong to do it. That's always good, blame someone for something that you made up in the first place.

Per the Free Press: "The Lions will enter the season with Decker and Penei Sewell as their starting tackles, Frank Ragnow at center and Jonah Jackson at left guard. Graham Glasgow and Halapoulivaati Vaitai have spent training camp competing for the right guard job, and Matt Nelson and rookie Colby Sorsdal are the backups."

And that is solely speculation based upon the Lions giving him lots of snaps in the preseason games while all the major contributors rested. There are even people projecting Houston could get cut, which seems really absurd. The more likely scenario is Campbell wants to see if Houston can actually play every down at a high level or if he is just going to be a situational pass rusher.

The fact that the Lions can get their OL depth in the fifth round is a sign of outstanding scouting. Or really terrible OL depth. But I think it is more of the first because they have been pretty high on their praise of him and he has separated himself.

Reports from The Athletic and others at Lions camps/joint practices unfortunately have been saying it's the latter. They have said repeatedly, the Lions backup OL has struggled badly over and over.

Because stuff like this doesn't just leak for no reason and if it does occasionally teams will debunk it right away if it isn't true. There is something to this, how much? None of us know, but don't act like this is impossible and it is like trading prime Aaron Donald, or Myles Garrett.

What has leaked? There was speculation by a national writer who had exactly zero information and there was another unconfirmed and unsorted vague report that the Lions were shopping him with zero context. Perhaps Holmes was looking to bring in a top WR and Houston was part of the conversation. The Lions did not leak anything though. If you believe everything the media tells us, Lamar Jackson would be our QB now.

I didn't say the Lions leaked it. Someone did though, that is how these things start. No one is saying it is happening, but to bury your head in the sand as if it is impossible is beyond naive. Your shtick is so over top it is hard to take you serious. Lamar asked for a trade, so what happens people start floating teams for him to go to and the Lions were one of those teams, so were the Falcons, 49ers and others. No one ever said anything was a done deal with Lamar being traded. Do I think Holmes made a phone call when Lamar was available? Yes I do. Do I think it went much further than that? No I don't, but that still means they showed a little interest. The same is probably true now with Houston.

Your offense is going to destroy the Chiefs defense next week. Chris Jones hasn't reported yet and may not report until week 8 while they haggle over an extension. Even if he does show up this week there is no way he's going to be ready for a full load.

And without him everything is off with the Chiefs defense.

I do plan on betting the over in that game.

A little concerned about offense in first game. Goff has not played, little play from Gibby and Monty. Gibby and LaPorta are unknowns. Williams not playing does not matter as he did not do anything last year. Kicker has me worried a little.

Should I be?

I'm a little worried about the kicker. Campbell and Holmes seem a little worried. If they don't bring anyone in Campbell will probably keep going for it on 4th down when they're around the 35-40 yard line.

Against the Chiefs I'm worried about a turnover or a missed coverage on defense leading to a quick KC score and getting steamrolled by momentum with their crowd going bonkers. If the Lions can keep it close in the first quarter maybe they can run the ball and stay in it.

No...Campbell uses his scrimmages to replace the games. He has a great handle on what it takes to be prepared and from what he has seen those players are ready for the season. I do not like our kicker, would prefer Badgley. Having unknowns probably makes it harder for KC to prepare than Detroit.

I say yes, I know Jones won't play or will only play limited snaps the first week, but the Chiefs have the best offense in the league that adds pressure to the other team to keep up and they have one of the best home field advantages in the NFL.

Interested in how the defense shows up in KC for the opener. Against Philadelphia last I year in the opener the Lions were inexperienced and overly revved up. Continually over pursued and failed to contain the edge. Those themes continued but improved as the season went on.

With all eyes on this game as the NFL season opener and with the expectations that are now attached to the Lions I’m looking to see if Lions stay grounded and “embrace” the challenge. They are more experienced and talented and had some success last year.

Playing on the road against the Champions and the best QB is starting the season with the biggest challenge you could ask.

Have observed Dave Campbell using the word “embrace” frequently in his coachspeak in reference to hardships, challenges and the intensity of big game moments. I take it to mean not shying away or avoiding them but rather seeing them as opportunities. This thinking is part of the culture change that is happening.

When the KC game was announced as our season opener Campbell immediately spoke of embracing the challenge.

KC traded for a DT today may well be a sign they don’t expect Jones back.soon.

Very surprised Starling Thomas V got waived
For sure.
Kept hearing he was very handsy and grabbing though.

he's a great gunner on the punt coverage team

think there's a chance they're playing the IR game - after the initial 53 man and PS signings, move Melifonwu to the IR-R and call up Starling

Dorsey and Gilmore came on late so I think they gave them the nod bc they showed out the last game

taking Moseley off PUP so he can start playing Week 2 or 3 is great news but also squeezed the roster a bit

no Craig Reynolds 👀

I imagine most if not all of the 16 man practice squad will be the guys cut the last two days.

EDIT: TE Darrell Daniels, RB Craig Reynolds & RB Benny Snell were all released. They can sign with anyone they wish, though I would hope Netflix is retained. The others will pass through waivers before resigning as practice squad players. If claimed, they have to go directly onto the claiming teams 53 man.

RB seems a little light even with the FB.

Both RB and WR. Kind of expected because they had too many DL they had to keep. I was surprised it was Cabinda and not Reynolds though. Did not think we were keeping 6 LBs. I would have guessed another CB.

I am guessing we are in the market still for another top WR, a PK, and some OL depth. But it is a very solid roster. Amon-Ra and Goff are the most irreplaceable.
