The Lions extending Sewell early for $28 million looks like a bargain with other 2021 draft studs Parsons and Chase extensions looking to be in the $40-$45 million range.

But when Hutchinson comes up for an extension, he could command closer to $50 million assuming he gets healthy and plays like he did.

If the cost is $40-50M per on a long-term deal, the franchise tag will come into play I think.

I think it important that we see Hutch get back to the level of play he was at prior to injury before writing the check. I think he will most likely make a full recovery, however nothing is a given. Thankfully DE is fairly deep with this class.

Hutch is getting a lot of money no matter what. I'm not worried one bit about it.

We were never trading for Crosby or Garrett. Tying up $70 million or more in 2 edge rushers would decimate their salary cap and was not feasible given the players coming up for contracts this year and next.

I think Smith's guaranteed money was too high to keep so I'm ok with him being cut. I also would have been ok with keeping him. I wasn't all that impressed with him, especially his run defense. He was nowhere to be seen in the playoffs game. He's also going to be 33 years old when the season starts.

Davenport's contract has a base salary of $1.35 million with a $300K signing bonus. That's not much more than end of bench veterans. The rest are in incentives. The man can play, he's just injured a lot. I loved the move given the small amount of guaranteed money (BL posted the contract details in the last post on the previous page). The guarantees are low enough that they won't have to count on him. It's a low risk high reward move.

I was curious how many times Detroit has used the franchise tag, which was introduced 1993. It is pretty rare - and it's never happened under the current owner or leadership.
  • OT Jeff Backus-2006 - subsequently signed a mutli-year deal
  • DT Cory Redding-2007 - subsequently signed a mutli-year deal
  • DE Cliff Avril-2012 - signed with Seattle the following season, won a SB with them.
  • DE Ziggy Ansah-2018 - coming off a 12 sack season in 2017, played 11 g in his last year with the Lions, 7 for Seattle the next year, 2 with SF in 2020, and was out of the league by 2021.
There is nothing to suggest that will be a factor with Aidan, and there is no reason to suspect they will not get a deal done soon. He doesn't need to prove anything and every time Holmes has said they want to figure something out to retain a player, that's what happened.

They were never leaving so not exactly a surprise. And they weren't signed by any NFC contender.

I would have liked to have seen us go for Crosby at the trade deadline last year. All in.

Honestly think this Super Bowl window is closing faster than many think.

The draft is great when you are building. We are built. Last year was the time to commit to a championship and we didn't.
Now we have lost a ton of coaches. We are starting to lose good players. The trade we did make didn't pan out at all.
We have missed out (or not even tried) to get some of the pass rush help we need.

I agree 100%. It's why I wanted them to sell the farm for Crosby.
 
And for all the "we need to save money for players x,y and z", Buffalo has spent $500 million and free agency hasn't even started.

Somehow Bosa will end up in San Fran. Doesn't San Fran pay a lot of people big money? Yes.

So why can't Detroit? We all know the cap is easily played with. Make it happen.

I disagree completely about the Lions Super Bowl window closing fast, which is why you want to go all in and I don't. Their core is very young and talented.

I've never been a fan of signing free agents on day one. That's when the vast majority of bad contracts happen. I like waiting for the first wave to get done and there will still be really good free agents left.

I also wouldn't want to tie up $75-80 million on two elite edge rushers. That would crush your salary cap.

Basically, your opinion is valid because you think the Super Bowl window is closing fast. I think the window will be open for few more years so I'm not in favor of going all in for one player as you suggested regarding Crosby last year.

Goff's age alone tells you the window is tight.
 
I would argue that defensive tackle is a more pressing need than edge rusher. Alim McNeill might not be ready for the start of the season. D.J. Reader is the only proven player there. Levi Onwuzerike is likely gone. There isn't much else behind the above. We ended the season with a bunch of practice squad types at defensive tackle.

Fortunately, the draft is very deep at defensive tackle and edge. But I think we need a starting caliber defensive tackle in free agency.

Yeah a FA plus a high draft pick would be ideal.

I don’t think the sky is falling but it is troubling to see coaches and players leaving. But when you are successful everyone wants a piece of you.
Lions want to be perennial contenders and as long as Holmes drafts well we’ll be so.

NFC is getting tougher. Eagles are champs but they are losing some players. Rams and Bucs are improved. Chicago with Ben Johnson and improving their OL are looking to be better. And Packers are always competitive.

Per ESPN / Schefter

The Detroit Lions are in talks with former Philadelphia Eagles EDGE Josh Sweat.

Sweat has played 16+ games the last three season and totaled 25.5 sacks in that stretch.
