Now that's funny but you've been here long enough to see me win these QB battles over and over again. You don't engage because you don't want to be wiped out like Capella. That's a smart move.

There have been many busts in first rd QBs. Stafford is not a bust at all. I think many Lion fans including myself felt we had a guy who was Peyton. Rodgers, Brady, Brees type of QB who made the players around him better. Stafford is not that guy..he is a good QB who needs all the parts in place around him, good o-line, a trio of good receivers, a running game and a decent defense to succeed.
The Dallas playoff game the Lions in reality did not get screwed. Watch the replay..Pettigrew grabbed the DBs facemask so it was a wash.
That game could have been Staffords defining moment..we had the ball with over 2 minutes left and 1-2 TOs with a great chance to win but it did not happen. A playoff game winning drive would have changed the course of the Lions future.

oh yeah, quite the cherry pick there in the Bell thread. If you go back and read it, it shows you are simply cherry picking.

Moments are not what we measure a player on.
Stafford is and has been a good QB on a bad team. Seeing that we are talking about the Lions, this will probably remain the case until he retires.

I never blamed the refs for that playoff loss. That PI came with 6-7 minutes left. The defense didn't step up. The guy who was the best comeback QB in the league 2014-16 (succeeded 20 out of 24 chances) came up small.
Thing is, we're in Year Ten and he's not going to morph into something he's not. I actually love Stafford as the face of the franchise. He's a good guy and easy to like, lives there year round, is involved in the community, never says the wrong thing, never a hint of any kind of embarrassing stuff. He's a great ambassador for the Detroit Lions.
He's not a winner, though.
Riddle me this: what are the defining moments of Matt Stafford in the NFL?
- the mic'ed up TD versus the Browns his rookie year after separating his shoulder (goose bumps stuff)
- one of the eight comebacks from 2015 (Colts, Redskins and Vikings were all improbable & insanely fun to watch)
- winning in Green Bay for the first time in 24 years? raised their record to 2-7 when they accomplished it in 2016
- the sidearm flick to Theo for the game winner (was that overtime?) versus Miami - at the time we barely knew who Riddick was
- that 50 yard bomb to Calvin over triple coverage versus the Bengals?

I could not agree more. I love Stafford as a person and the way he is around Detroit. I actually wish he would leave the Lions and have success on another team because right now Lions are on a borderline rebuild again. O-Line and D-line stink...need a TE, need help in the secondary, need WRs again. I would put Riddick at slot and leave him there.

A good middle of the road QB perfectly capable of winning and putting up all time great numbers if the Lions ever decide to go the one route I have yet to see in my lifetime: good OL/DL.

Look at the Lions draft and FA signing the last 5-6 years on both lines. Guys get drafted here and stink and are All-Pro or at least very productive after they leave. We sign All-Pro guys who come here and then all of a sudden can`t play. It is unreal.

3 Things We Learned
DETROIT -- The Lions lost again, this time by a 23-16 score on Thanksgiving against Chicago. They've now lost four times in five weeks heading into a game against the high-octane Los Angeles Rams. But first, here are three things we learned about Detroit in defeat.
1. Jim Bob Cooter's offense is broken.There's no other way to put it. Matthew Stafford, one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks of his generation, attempted exactly two passes longer than 15 yards. I get that it was by design, because of all the injuries heading into a game against a really good defense, but it also speaks to just how far Detroit is from competing against teams like the Bears. Who, by the way, have a first-year coach of their own. Yet they're doing exactly what Detroit said it could: Competing right away. Meanwhile, the Lions are sanding down their offense to absurd levels just to try to keep things from getting ugly. With the Rams coming to town next week, it's really going to underscore just how far Detroit's offense has fallen behind the curve under Cooter, and perhaps nobody's seat is hotter than his heading into 2019.
2. Teez Tabor is on the roster bubble. There's no other way to interpret Detroit's decision to deactivate the former second-round pick. Tabor has allowed 15 catches on his last 16 targets and three touchdowns. And Detroit wouldn't even let him see the field against backup Bears quarterback Chase Daniel. There's not a ton of downside to sticking with Tabor through the rest of the season, then seeing if he develops with a third offseason in Detroit. But at this point, it also wouldn't be a shock to see Detroit cut its losses. With Tabor still allowing a perfect QB rating after Thanksgiving, he's running out of chances.
3. LeGarrette Blount still has some juice left after all. He had seven carries for just 1 yard last week. He'd gained just 21 yards on 16 carries over the last month. And then he was supposed to somehow replace rookie sensation Kerryon Johnson against the Bears' top-ranked run defense? Yeah, there were doubts about him. But after a slow start, he delivered. Each of his first six runs after halftime went for 3 yards, one of which scored a touchdown. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry in the second half, plus caught a 15-yard pass. And he helped ignite Detroit's last-ditch comeback attempt with a 27-yard run in the fourth quarter. He won't make anyone forget about Kerryon Johnson anytime soon, but he did a solid job in spot duty. And that's a big development for a team that could be without its rookie stud for another couple weeks.

I actually think we can be quite good next year if Quinn gets things right.
We have some decent pieces in defence - Snacks, Slay, Kennard, Davis, Diggs even Christian Jones and 1-2 others all range from excellent ( Slay ) to being situationally very useful in Patricia’s schemes. Ansah was good last game but who knows what happens with him.
We need a better TE and a burner WR or 2. With a new OC perhaps - Golladay, Jones, new WR with speed, new TE and Kerryon at RB should see us all set.
We should have a high pick. With a decent draft and FA money to spend next year we can be good if Patricia doesn’t bomb and we find a new OC with some more creativity

Tabor just can`t cover anyone as a DB..maybe would be better suited for safety. Blount is hit or miss but is still capable for big games at times. Would not be opposed to signing him again on a reasonable one year deal.
Cooter will be the first coach fired when season ends.

Ebron with 12 TDs as a backup (started a handful while Doyle was hurt) is stunning. Matches his 4-year total with the Lions.

For week 12, Ebron out snapped Doyle 49-36, a first for 2018.
On the season its 483-366 in favor of EE, but he's played 5 more games.

I have Ebron on my FF team and have seen every TD of his on replay. What is amazing is that on at least 7-8 of his TDs he is totally uncovered because of a blown coverage..never have seen that so much. Or maybe it does happen but Luck is just more adept at finding the open man.

That quote in your post pretty much nails it. While others are obviously complicit as far as fault goes, taking away the main strength of your qb (arm strength), is not a recipe for long term success.

It’s incredible. I’m not saying it’s completely irrational - Stafford got sacked 16 times in two games earlier this month, Tate gone, Lang out, Jones out, Kerryon out, best TE rounds off his routes - but man alive, you roll out a Pop Warner/ Jr Varsity game plan with Matt Stafford as your QB? Get outta here. What do you think that does to a team’s psyche showing that little confidence in their ability to just go do your job.
BTW, lost in the malaise is Taylor Decker had an outstanding good* game versus Mack.

Not a Detroit guy but just watching from the outside the D is already trending in the right direction but the offense just doesn’t seem to have an identity and the coaching/ team management really has been awful at times.
2 big question marks for me going into next year will be:
1) Can they make the right OC hire?
Absolutely crucial. Stafford’s not going to make it happen by himself like Rodgers or Roethlesberger have at times but within a well coached offense he can be a great QB. Watching him as a Ravens fan he’s similar to Flacco in this way though obviously more talented.
2) Does Patricia learn from this year and become a more competent HC and better leader or does he just keep trying to get respect by looking like a hard ***?
Id honestly like to see the guy succeed but he needs to grow into this role if that’s going to happen. He looks like a guy who’s never done this before, and that’s only something you can only get away with for one year.

Slay has been inconsistent this year. He hasn't been shutting anyone down like he had the previous two seasons, and his stats / PFF grades are down across the board.
The starter opposite him is a rookie UDFA named Mike Ford who will be playing his third game; he's not a long term solution, but he does have decent speed. He played 29 snaps in his first game and 51/58 on Thanksgiving. Gave up receptions on 5 of 6 targets against the Bears but for only 32 yards. So that's the outside corners.
Nevin Lawson was the starting CB opposite Slay but he's been pushed inside to play the slot. Played every down on Thanksgiving. Thoroughly average.
The most interesting member of the Lions secondary is a guy who barely gets snaps. Tracey Walker had only six snaps on Thanksgiving but his contributions/production on a per snap basis are impressive and I'm hoping they'll bench FS Glover Quin down the stretch so we can see more of him. Tavon Wilson is still the SS.
Presumably CB Teez Tabor will be inactive again this week, but fire up any Rams WR you have if he's active. He's allowed 15 completions on 16 targets, opposing QBs have a perfect passer rating against him, and he's allowed 4 TDs. He may be the most inept defensive back I have ever seen in the NFL.
Since Snacks Harrison came over the Lions have gotten better at stopping inside runs; rookie Da'shawn Hand has also been outstanding inside, and PFF has him graded out as the best rookie interior lineman in the NFL. But Detroit still struggles with setting the edge and seemingly every game gives up a long run to the outside.
Rams might score 60 if they don't pull their starters.

The guy might just connect with Stafford due to his playing days and his play calling has to be a step up from what we are seeing now.
Just like norv turner, some guys are much better OCs than HCs.
Since becoming an OC in 2011, KK's offenses have averaged 550 yards and 42 points.

As much the Lions have pressing holes at every level of defense, I wondering if the best approach isn't just to make an effort to totally modernize our offense in the mold of the Rams, Chiefs, Saints, Bears, Eagles (last year). Tell Kingsbury that he gets full control of the offense and we will make FA and the draft priorities for adding offensive pieces he wants. Get a legitimate 3rd WR to replace Tate, 2 NFL caliber TEs, a RB with some juice to replace Blount.
