2025 Detroit Lions: 4-1 Lions win battle of the big cats. (65 Viewers)

The questions about Stafford being able to win have been put to rest.
12 years with Lions > 3 playoff games, 0 wins

1 year with Rams > 2 playoff games, 2 wins. And counting.

What three things do real estate & QBs have in common?

Location Location Location.

The questions about Stafford being able to win have been put to rest.
he any good under pressure?

seriously you should spend time on Reddit. makes TSP (“Tyreek is a moron he should have fallen down at the one”) seem reasonable.

last week they won bc of their run game & their D. Staff was just the starting game manager.

this week the narrative is Kupp bailed him out. Cooper put the team in his back.

remember when Matthew was overrated? that was cool.

Stafford has always been a solid QB, but a QB that needed lots of help and that is what he got with the Rams.

Now he has the best WR in the NFL for a second time, and former best WR and All-Pro in Odell.  Donald is the best DL in the NFL, Ramsey best CB in the NFL, then they added a HOF player in DE Vaughn Miller.

The Rams are loaded with talent all over the roster. Remember Goff took a less talented Ram to to a Superbowl as well.

As far as Stafford if he were still with Lions their record would have been about the same. 3-4 wins. It was time to move on for both parties.

I will feel the same was if Stafford, Mahomes, Jimmy G or Burrow wins the Superbowl and that will be nothing as I am not invested in any of them. I just watch for entertainment.

Lions might have won 2-3 of those close early games where Goff didn't play well. Which would have affected this upcoming draft more than just that one Rams pick dropping drown a few picks.

That throw to Kupp was a dime (didn’t need to break stride one bit) under serious pressure off of his back foot with the season on this line.  That throw alone made the Goff trade 100% worth it.

In context, that was really special. I mean nothing was going right for the Rams after they went up 27-3. Kupp fumbling. Center snapping on the wrong count, another turnover. McVay waving the white flag on 3rd & 11 (run then missed FG short.) Ramsey giving up a bomb. Akers 2nd lost fumble. It’s like the whole franchise was choking. Calling a draw on first down to force their last timeout.

Seemed inevitable TB was gonna pull another one out. No way anyone was thinking “hey make a coupe first downs here & Gay will kick the game winner.” Naw, everyone was probably thinking well it’s going to OT and the Rams are doomed. That on the money bomb to Kupp was every bit as shocking as the 49ers blocked punt-TD.

Incredibly clutch play - that’s a legacy defining moment.

It was ridiculous that this was ever even a question. Can’t believe I had to even argue this with LIONS fans as much as I did with fans of other teams. ‘Not good enough to win a playoff game’. Emm excuse me a Brock bloody Osweiler led team won a playoff game because he went against a Connor Cook led Raiders team at home. Such a meaningless statement. Stafford had three tough games on the road, never much of an Oline or a running game

1. he was very young on road at Superdome

2. he played very well and was potentially screwed by the refs and had a bad OC that held the team back

3. injured finger hampered him on road at Seahawks

Guy was always clearly good enough to win.

I can’t fully subscribe to this. Kupp is only as good as he is this year because he has a QB that can throw lasers to him all over the field. That Rams Oline isn’t impregnable. The D hasn’t been as stout as it should be. Mcveys offence had been seen less and was taking the league by storm when Goff went to the Super Bowl. There’s a lot more tape on how he does things at this point.

Hey I like Stafford.   Just let the games play out and we will see.

Bottom line is Goff took the Rams to a Superbowl and lost.  Stafford has not got there yet.  If they win this weekend then we will see what happens.

Senior Bowl news: Lions were given their choice of which pre chosen squad to coach. They chose the squad that contained these 3 QBs:

Malik Willis

Sam Howell

Bailey Zappe

An interesting crop of FA receivers this year, pending franchise tags or re-signings.

Adams

Godwin

Mike Williams

Beckham

Allen Robinson

JuJu

Gallup

Davante wants $30M per. Imagine trying to construct a roster around that albatross.

Would take $80M + to land Godwin. Great player when healthy but we’d be better off passing on him.

Not sure there’s mutual interest but Robinson has Michigan ties. Still only 28.

Does not Matter if Rams win or lose the super Bowl, Stafford is a good guy, was good for Detroit.

Wish him well.  Was kind of glad the SF guy dropped that sure INT.

Not the right time to sign any of the top FA WRs IMO, they almost never work out especially with our QB situation.  I wouldn't mind testing the waters with Gallup if it wasn't crazy expensive but that's about it.

Forget Adams as he will still be good but not great with Rodgers.  They had a connection that will be hard to match.

I really like Godwin and TB might be in another SB had he not torn his ACL.  But he did and not will not willing to go that route.  If Lions were one playmaker away maybe but they are not.

No interest in Beckham.

Robinson is a definite maybe.

Bengals rebuild took three years.

2020 4-11-1
2021 13-7-0 Super Bowl

Super Bowl LVIII will be played on February 11, 2024, at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. Anybody making the trip?

Lions lost to both Super Bowl teams in back to back games.

Were destroyed by Bengals at home in week 6, 34-11. Cincinnati was leading 27-0 in the 4th quarter and Lions would only rush for 36 yards total.

Next week they played the Rams on the road and lost that one 28-19. Lions played this game like it was their Super Bowl. Campbell called numerous trick plays including an on side kick. Lions led late in the third quarter and rushed for 136 yards total but were finally undone by a Goff INT in the endzone in the 4th quarter.

Cinci is going to be a tough out based on these results. I do think the Lions were looking ahead to the Rams game when they played Cinci but nevertheless the Bengals dominated the Lions.

If we had Joe Burrow that might be our time frame as well.

If I had to choose a QB the top 4 would be Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, and Herbert.  Just not sure the order though.  All AFC  QBs too.

The AFC title game is going to have a mix of those 4 for a long time.

You get one for the Lions Bobby..who do you take?

Jim Caldwell's time with the Lions referenced in Flores' suit against the NFL. Mentions Caldwell having 3 winning seasons with the Lions and the Lions sucking after he left. Point being that Caldwell won with Detroit when others didn't but wasn't hired as a head coach afterwards.

Lions lapped up the Patriots mystique hiring Quinn who eventually got another Patriot retread Patricia after he fired Caldwell. Lions as usual guilty of incompetence.

Not buying Holmes' defense of the Trinity Benson trade. Benson was likely being waived and Lions were in good position to claim him without giving up draft capital. Lions giving up what turns out to be the second pick of the fifth round as part of the trade.

Benson had no pedigree coming into the NFL as a FA and had not played a NFL game before joining the Lions and showed little to nothing in his time with Lions. If Lions draft 2 WRs and obtain a decent FA WR do not see how he makes team except maybe the practice squad.  Holmes said he was looking to Benson more for 2022-23 season but again odds are against him.

Hopefully i have to eat these words.

Yeah that's kind of weird Holmes and A.R.E. still propping him up, he's going into his fourth TC. He's a good athlete but 'twas a trash bag....just take the L. It's the same for everyone, you win some / lose some. NBD either way.

Did this change or is it still what was announced? Our 5th + 7th for their 6th + TB12?

_______________

Positional MVP’s as voted by the opposite position group:

  • WR - Calvin Austin (Memphis) as voted by the DB group
  • WR - Christian Watson (No Dak St) as voted by the CB group

Same trade but giving up the 5th rounder is what bugged me the most.

WFT named themselves the Commanders. Kind of sucky. Reminds of the Washington Generals who were always getting thumped by the Globetrotters.

Copied this from tony pauline/pro football network site

2022 Senior Bowl final takeaways

Teams were less than complimentary about the way the Detroit Lions ran their practices. As one general manager said, “These were the worst Senior Bowl practices in 25 years!!”

I would agree to an extent. There was very little tempo during the sessions run by the Lions. Additionally, there seemed to be too much waiting around. I witnessed long pauses between snaps when the receivers and defensive backs were doing drills.

As far as the worst practices in 25 years? All I’ll say is Dave McGinnis and the Arizona Cardinals’ staff ran some awful practices in 2002.

You pissed he’s not batting 1.000?

It was the day after cutting Breshad Perriman. They were looking for speed. IDK, in context it seemed like acceptable risk at the time. Didn’t work out. That’s gonna happen sometimes.

from Twitterverse:

I’ve seen enough, I am no longer a Detroit Lions fan. Not only did we trade away Super Bowl appearing QB Matthew Stafford, but our coaching staff is completely overwhelmed today. I’m taking my fandom to a team whose coaches can win a Senior Bowl: the New York Jets.

I believe this is the updated list of the Lions ten draft picks:

 ROUND 1

No. 2

No. 31 or 32 (Via Rams)

ROUND 2

No. 34

ROUND 3

No. 66

No. 97 (Compensatory Pick)

ROUND 4

None

ROUND 5

No. 176 (Compensatory Pick)

ROUND 6

No. 180

No. 217 (Compensatory Pick)

Round 7

No. 230

No. 238

Pro Bowl day is boring.  So I will entertain myself with a draft trade calculator.  I doubt any of these will actually happen but just think if one did.  🤔

🏈 For entertainment purposes only 🏈

Lions #31 or #32 + #34 for the #13 pick from the Browns

#2 + #34 for the #4 & #10 from the Jets ✈

#2 + #31 or #32 for the #5 and #7 from the Giants

Nobody bats a 1000% but it seemed like an unwise trade at the time. Do not care for Holmes throwing smoke about it. I'm wary of Holmes giving up draft capital when he's hot on a guy, he seems to get a tad overly anxious. Besides I'm a pessimist by nature.

Watched only a few minutes of the game. Guys were going at less than half speed. Understandable but why watch it.

Two of the trades you mentioned are sometimes offered in the PFN and PFF draft simulators. With the lack of top QB draft prospects few trade offers are being offered for the #2.

Another former Lion playing a key role for the Rams is defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson. He was a 2nd round pick in the 2016 draft and played four seasons for the Lions. He was signed by the Rams as a FA in 2020 on a two year contract. His overall PFF grade for this season was 72.5 which is above average.

Forgot to post earlier this week, believe this was Tuesday or Wednesday:

Zac Taylor on new Lions OC Ben Johnson: 'He sees things differently. He does a great job with the analytics side of things as well. He’s just one of the really, truthfully, one of the sharpest football coaches in this league'

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said he's tried to hire Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson many, many, many times, but he keeps getting promoted and blocked. Taylor calls Johnson one of the brightest young coaches in the league.

more in this tweet (long quote in a screenshot so I can’t quote it)

Vikings are going in a different direction but Aubrey Pleasant is stil in the running as the Saints DC.

If we do lose him, the Dolphins fired DB coach Gerald Alexander yesterday. Makes no sense bc he did a great job developing the Dolphins young DBs. MCDC was an assistant in Miami when he was a player - seems like a good fit.

Even in Miami, we're not sure who did what. And neither are the beat writers. Josh Boyer came up as a DB coach in the Belichick system, so he knows pass defense. Plus, I think we're keeping most of the others coaches on defense. Gerald Alexander's wife tweeted that it was her husband and not Boyer responsible for the 2nd half improvement on defense. Tweets since deleted.

Quotes from an actual player:

>>In mid December, Ogbah and Baker raved about the job Boyer was doing. Ogbah: "Coach Boyer, he’s done a great job disguising plays, all-out blitzes. We kind of went back to our old thing, but I’m glad he’s switching it up and giving offenses different looks, confusing them."
