I am not usually big on lists, but Sewell should be the top offensive lineman by a mile. He can play the right and left tackle spot at an All-Pro level.

Any of the Michigan folks going to watch a TC practice this summer?

Nice looking changes - built awnings to cover the bleachers, and a fancy two-story VIP tent.

Still free to attend.

Sheila is the best, man.

It is the little things that make big differences. Having a more pleasant area for fans will keep them more enthusiastic which will fire up the players and make them feel more appreciated and work harder. She is like the perfect owner, she is hands off to let the experts make the decisions but she is engaged in everything enough to know what is needed.

Jamo is sick and puking on the field as he burns players for TDs. Claims he just ate something bad for breakfast. They are saying he is not only stronger but also faster.

+40000 for OPOY.

We are Isaac Ukwu days away from Opening Night v the Rams

Branch is just walk throughs for now but should be up to full speed soon. They’re going to give him a lot of reps at S to see if they can develop his versatility. Emmanuel Mosley spent yesterday at Slot Corner and impressed. Lot of competition to figure out who their 5 best DBs are rn.

Christian Mahogany will be out with an illness again today. As expected, D.J. Reader is still rehabbing. Everyone else passed their mandatory conditioning test, no other injury issues.

Today will be another day of light drills. The CBA governs how much practice & classroom time the coaches get with the players. They’re just focusing on installs and won’t be in pads for awhile.

EDIT:

my injury optimism is just notes from listening to MCDC, a little research shows we do have guys not doing any drills rn

JULY
07/24The Detroit Lions place CB Carlton Davis, WR Donovan Peoples-Jones, CB Amik Robertson and WR Tre'Quan Smith on Active/Non-Football Injury.
07/21The Detroit Lions place OL Giovanni Manu on Active/Non-Football Injury.

Cool video of the St Brown family visiting Germany. I've been a Sun God fan because of his performance on the field, after seeing his inner dawg in the Receivers series and his intelligence and personality in this video he may be my favorite player in the league currently.

Lions should be the next team to play in Germany.

For some reason I can't link the youtube video, it is being called spam. Detroit Lions channel, Inside the Den 2024 Episode 2.

Bates went 6-for-6 from beyond 50 yesterday.

Lot of kicker Qs this morning. Campbell emphasized it’s going to be just as important to be consistent inside 45. Also doesn’t necessarily think having a kicker with 50+ capability will change the way he coaches bc they still want to maximize their opportunities “to get 4 more” and prefers to put his kickers in a position to succeed (exception being end game.) It was a long nuanced answer so listen for yourself (first part of presser.)

Injected a lot of talent into the CB room & they’re a confident group. It’s been transformational, you can feel it in the room and on the field.

I was surprised Badgley was the one they kept for competition. Hate to see anyone injured, but his days were numbered. Badgley was a good kicker who helped win games for us but just lacked the range. Bates look like he can be a highly accurate kicker, but kicking is a mental game which is hard to simulate in practice.

That explains the beginning of Campbell's press conference - usually they show the walkup to the podium, and today it cut right to questions about Bates. From other reporting it's obvious the first thing Dan said was Badgley had been hurt Thursday & is going on season ending IR, but that wasn't in the feed.

Campbell noted that the Lions intend on bringing in another kicker for competition, and have already had a workout at the facility.

Packers claimed Turner off waivers, wonder who they have in mind. Campbell said he and Brad intend on bringing in another kicker but there's no rush.

After seeing these QB contracts, Brad Holmes did a great job locking up Goff when they did...and this doesn't factory in Dak and Purdy, who are both going to break the bank.

Currently 5th highest paid & will be at least 7th by the time his deal kicks in. He’ll be middle of the pack by the time the bigger cap hits come due.

Plotting out all the lions contracts on a year by year basis including 7% avg increase in cap - it's actually been double digit increases 2 of the last 3 years - Goff's contract never goes above 16.7% of the cap until 2028, when it's 20.7%. They can ameliorate that by a simple restructure if they want to kick it down the road.

It’s a team friendly deal & in the current marketplace, relatively reasonable.

I would think most of this year's remaining salary cap will go to extending Alim and/or Deckard. Getting those two back are absolute musts. Hutch being a first rounder could be extended or wait, but not until after the season.. Iffy and Houston would be next top priorities to resign depending on how they look this year along with consideration for Davis, Moseley and maybe even Davenport.

Last year the only starters lost were Jonah and Reynolds and both were arguably upgraded. I imagine we will be only lose a few starters next year, but we have a stable of developmental players and will have draft picks to maintain the solid roster. You really can not overstate what an excellent job Brad has done in setting up this organization to be very successful for at least the next 3 years. We may not have the advantage of the QB locked up on a rookie deal, but we have a ton of other key players still on their rookie deals to make up for it. Stacking up great drafts is the key to not getting into a salary cap squeezes. Unfortunately teams like SF, GB, and Philly tend to also draft well.

Also to note, Dan Campbell and Sheila creating a great atmosphere where players wanting to come to Detroit and/or stay in Detroit and not test the free agency market really will be a huge advantage in keeping the team together for the long haul.

Bad injury for a kicker but The Badger is no big loss as it did seem DC did not had a lot of faith in him. Would have liked to have seen Turner hang around for camp to see what he had. Looks like is the Bates hotels job to lose.

Per The Detroit News, Lions sign Taylor Decker to a 3 year contract extension

Decker’s agent, Jonathan Feinsod, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the deal is worth $60 million with $31.83 million guaranteed.

on Alim McNeill, Holmes said: “He’s another one, it’s about time.”

a reporter asked Alim about that quote

Asked Lions DL Alim McNeill about this quote, he told me he’s instructed his agent to handle that and not tell him, because he’s locked in on training camp

edit - the full quote is better:

Alim McNeill full quote -- "Honestly, I told my agent not to talk to me about that. I'm in training camp right now, so I'm not even thinking about that. I got to play good. I'm worried about winning this year. Whatever happens, happens. But I haven't done any of that."

Oddly there are reports that Turner is looking terrible in camp at Packerland. Not so surprising the Bears offense is a total mess.

Who will be the biggest breakout player of the 2024 season?

Levi, Amik, Jamo, Terrion, Houston, Campbell, Davenport, Pascal, other?

Feels like they’re really hoping BB to S works out. Finding the top 5 DBs is a real challenge bc really good players are going to struggle for snap counts.

Campbell brought up EMann vs Robertson at Slot CB as being a good one bc they’ve both looked great so far.

Today was the first day of pads. “That’s where it starts to get real, that’s where you see guys emerge and pull ahead. We think so-and-so is in a great place, but until I see with collisions involved, I don’t totally believe it. Thats the separator.”

Why can't it be all of them?

I somewhat agree as they all can be key pieces and breakout, but three of those players will be fighting each other for playing time and even so, only one player can have the 'biggest' breakout, which i think will be Jamo. Davenport has had one good year out of five, so whether he can breakout is a Grey area.

I think Levi could break out. This past offseason was the first time he wasn't rehabbing an injury. He was able to train and work out and prepare for training camp for the first time in his career. Levi has been impressive in OTAs and camp. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I don’t think Onwuzurike or Paschal get enough snaps to break out but they are definitely continuing to develop. Levi has had quite the journey, will be an achievement just to make the 53-man. Josh has a lot of versatility to play inside or out. You need a deep DL rotation and I’m expecting good things from them.

3rd year in a row we’ve heard grumblings JH4 needs to prove he can play the Sam. I think that situation befuddles fans more than anything that’s happened in the Campbell/Glenn era.

OK, we get it, he’s too small to be a run defender & not agile enough to use in coverage. So what? Is anything more valuable to killing a drive than a sack? Why can’t they accept his limitations and maximize his unique skill set? Dude has insane bend. Like it’s not enough that he got a sack, he used a fluky eurostep to get around the OT. He had contain and abandoned that to sprint 15 yards to sack Fields. Oh no, we can’t have guys breaking defensive rules to make a fantastic play.

Hearing a lot of rumors / chatter they might keep Betts over Houston. I don’t get it.

Feels like there almost has to be some kind of personally clash too. Just doesn’t make sense that a specialized pass rusher with the highlights be put together as a rookie would be struggling to make the team.

John Cominsky was carted off with a lower body injury this a.m.

ETA - rolled up fm behind, right knee. tried to get up but couldn’t put weight on it. have to wait for the report.

Rough break for Cominsky. At DE right now they have Hutch, Davenport, Paschal, Houston, Betts.

Levi has been taking reps on the outside. He’s the best replacement for Commish in terms of body type.

If they keep him on the 90-man (e.g., place him on IR-R same day as final cuts), he could possibly be ready in 5 months. If he gets placed on IR right away then his season is over.

Lions players voted into the NFLN Top100:

22. Penei Sewell
23. Amon-Ra St. Brown

No Frank

Given who is left (see Yogi’s thread), won’t be in the Top Ten

Seems wrong - maybe people outside Detroit don’t understand how much he means to their success

Did not have Daurice Fountain repping with the 1s on my bingo card. Took a ton of snaps with ARSB & Jamo the last two days. Way ahead of A Green & DPJ in the battle for WR3.

(Kalif is clearly the 3rd best WR but he can’t play the outside X)

Former state record hurdler, Lions WR Fountain trying to high-point his way to roster spot

Allen Park — It’s not reasonable to suggest Daurice Fountain has come out of nowhere this offseason. The reality is the 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver has been building his roster case in Detroit for nearly a year outside the public eye.

Remember, after training camp, the media no longer gets to watch a meaningful portion of practice. So when Fountain joined the Lions practice squad days before the 2023 season, we weren’t able to see him do anything more than stretching and running a couple position drills.

Given he’d appeared in eight games and caught just two passes since entering the league six years earlier as a fifth-round draft pick out of Northern Iowa, there wasn’t much reason to dig deeper.

But it says something when you stick on the taxi squad an entire season. It means the team sees value in what you’re bringing to practice, and the potential to contribute down the road.

So here we are, a year later, and Fountain is seeing a fair share of reps with the first-team offense. He’s being given an opportunity, one that was earned, to show he deserves a spot.

“By the end of the year, he was one of those (practice squad players) where you were like, ‘Man, this guy improved.,’” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “You could see it in practice, you could feel it, and man, he works. Gosh, he’s a worker. He’s got ability and he works. And so, he’s one of those guys that, yeah, he’s caught our eye. He’s caught my eye.”

Fountain responded with a strong start to camp. On the first day, he made a play that should still make the cut for the highlight reel by the end of camp, creating late separation and fully extending to make a leaping grab over the cornerback in coverage. The next day, he blew by first-round rookie Terrion Arnold for a deep catch. The day after that, it was a critical special teams play, downing a punt inside the 10-yard line as a gunner.

Fountain understands those eye-catching plays will garner him some attention, but consistency is what it will take to win a job.

“I've got to be consistent,” he said. “That's the main thing. We talked about it during the first day meetings. Coach Campbell was talking about not wanting to see the guys who only make the splash plays. He wants to see the guys who can be consistent this whole camp. That's the main thing I've been focusing on.”

That had to make Monday’s practice — the first where the team was in pads — so frustrating. Instead of sustaining and building on his momentum, he put two catchable balls on the ground. He’ll need to quickly reset starting Tuesday as the team pushes forward, toward a pair of joint practices and the preseason opener against the New York Giants next week.

EDIT - he caught an 80 yarder against Carlton Davis Tuesday. It was the highlight of the day, and Jamo & ARSB were the first ones to hype him up in the end zone.

Beyond the playmaking, what stands out about Fountain is his skill set. He has a bigger frame than most of the options on Detroit’s roster, and his ability to high-point the ball is unmatched. That’s thanks to leaping ability he calls “God given.”

In high school, he set the Wisconsin state record in the 110-meter hurdles; a mark that stood for a decade until it was broken this spring. And coming out of college, he posted a 42.5-inch vertical jump, which is an elite result for any position.

His ability to go up over a defender is one of things the Lions love most.

“They obviously want a jump-ball guy, especially one who can stretch the field and attack the ball, man,” Fountain said. “That's what they want out of me. I know I bring a physical presence with my style of play I have, and they just want me to display that every chance I get. They just told me to be me. They've been really good about bringing me along in the system, but at the end of the day, they just want me to go out there and dominate.”

He’ll also need to find ways to contribute on special teams. Wide receivers near the back of the depth chart rarely make a roster without that ability. The good news is Fountain has plenty of experience in those roles, and the Lions are just trying to figure out what he does best. That’s included some recent trials in the all-important gunner role on punt coverage.

What also doesn’t hurt is the support of his teammates. He was embraced early by Amon-Ra St. Brown, Kalif Raymond and Josh Reynolds, who departed this offseason for a better contract offer in Denver. And when Fountain hauled in that bomb working against Arnold last week, the team’s other pass-catchers celebrated enthusiastically, none more than Jameson Williams.

“I feel that's what really special about this receiver room,” Fountain said. “We all really care for each other and we want each other to succeed. At the end of the day, we're here to pick each other up. And by us getting better, it elevates everybody's game.”

The Lions know what they have at the top of their receiver depth chart. St. Brown is an All-Pro, steady as they come. And while Raymond doesn’t close to matching the volume, he’s similarly consistent. Williams, meanwhile, is the explosive playmaker seemingly prepared to come into his own.

But the rest of the depth chart is up for grabs. Fountain is in the mix for a roster spot along with veterans like Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tre’Quan Smith, and younger options such as last year’s seventh-round draft pick, Antoine Green, and undrafted rookies Jalon Calhoun and Isaiah Williams.

“He is making plays,” Campbell said about Fountain. “And the other thing is, he’s doing some things on special teams that is catching our eye, too. So that’s a good sign. Man, to have a big receiver that runs pretty good for that size, and he plays physical, he kind of brings a different game in that room, and could potentially help us on special teams? That’s a good sign. He’s in a good spot.”

MCDC is the kind of coach who doesn’t care if he’s 28, or on his 4th team, or has 8 g / 2 receptions after 6 seasons of being on practice squads. He’s making plays, and there is a path for him if he keeps this up.

He’s made big time catches v T Arnold and CD3. Early TC darling is a tale as old as time, probably doesn’t last. But kudos for earning his way up the depth chart. STer too, so there’s a legit chance he makes a 53-man for the first time in his career.

Seems like literally every Detroit beat writer has tweeted or written about him. Dude has been impressive.

  • Riley Patterson claimed by Commanders
  • James Turner was released by the Packers & cleared waivers - free to sign anywhere

Colton Pouncey:

Lions G Kevin Zeitler asked for his thoughts on Detroit's defensive line. Zeitler: "I think we're gonna have two $20-plus million dollar D-tackles soon."Followed up with him to ask who he was talking about. Alim McNeill and...Levi Onwuzurike.

OK that’s malarkey but speaks to how good of a camp Levi is having.

Ben Johnson said this morning when asked about his TC impressions so far said “I think we’re going to have a really stout run defense. When we try to run inside against McNeil, we can’t budge him.”

DJ Reader hasn’t practiced yet. Their run D was really good last year, but 2024 looks like it might be even better.

Dan Campbell raved about Daurice Fountain this morning - the practice squad WR continues to run with the 1s (ARSB & Jamo.) It's a big opportunity for him but he has to prove consistency. That over splash plays will earn him a role.

Update on Vaki - said he's good, soreness but nothing to worry about. Said he's still learning the position, he's further along as a receiver than a runner, but still acclimating to RB (2023 was his first year playing both ways - was a SS before that.)

One thing they're working on right now is keeping the pace up during practice. It varies from day-to-day, some days are more mental walkthroughs and classroom/film time. But while they're out there they've been trying to keep the intensity high. They want the players used to feeling fatigued, so the players learn how to push themselves, and get used to processing/thinking while being exhausted - because that is what every game is like

Toward the end someone asked which player is doing really well but it hasn't been mentioned or noticed by consensus observations. "Jermar Jefferson. He's in a really good place." Interrupted the next question to repeat "I mean a REALLY good place." Dude hasn't played a down since his rookie year, love that he picked someone who keeps working and battling even thought it's super unlikely he makes the 53-man. They genuinely do believe all 70 guys matter (53 active + 16 practice squad + Intl Pathway dude.)
